WILLIAM BOOTH
Founder of The Salvation Army
excerpt from Salvation Army website
William Booth was born in Nottingham in 1829. At the age
of 13 he was sent to work as an apprentice in a
pawnbroker's shop to help support his mother and sisters.
The Job made him only too aware of the poverty in which

people lived and how they suffered
humiliation and degradation because of

it. During his teenage years he
became a Christian .When his
apprenticeship was completed he
moved to London, again to work
in the pawnbroking trade. He
joined up with the local Methodist
Church and later decided to
become a minister.
After his marriage to Catherine
Mumford in 1855 he spent several
years as a Methodist minister, travelling all around the
country, preaching. He returned to London with his family,
having resigned his position as a Methodist minister. One
day in 1865 he found himself in the East End of London,
preaching to crowds of people in the streets. Outside the
Blind Beggar pub some missioners heard him speaking and
were so impressed by his powerful preaching that they
asked him to lead a series of meetings they were holding in
a large tent.
The tent was situated on an old Quaker burial ground on
Mile End waste in Whitechapel. The date for the first
meeting was set for 2 July, 1865. Booth soon realised he
had found his destiny. He formed his own movement,
which he called 'The Christian Mission'.
Slowly the mission began to grow but the work was hard,
outposts were eventually established and in time attracted
converts, yet the results remained discouraging-this was just
another of the 500 charitable and
religious groups trying to help in the
East End. It was not until 1878 when
The Christian Mission changed its
name to The Salvation Army that
things began to happen. The impetus
changed. The idea of an Army
fighting sin caught the imagination of
the people and the Army began to
grow rapidly.

The PFA held our annual Christmas Bazaar on Saturday

would especially like to thank Fiona Hunt for making this
such a successful event. Funds raised will be used to

All pupils and staff have worked tremendously hard to

In connection with the article on trees in last month’s
magazine, I felt the manner in which the contributor set

out their feelings was unwarranted and uncalled for.

KKicickkeerrss I understand the clearance took place to try and stop
continual illegal fly-tipping of items such as rubble,
hardcore, car chassis, tyres, etc. to name but a few. The
trees without TPO’s, unfortunately, paid the price at the
same time. This is privately owned land, albeit with a
footpath running through it, not a rubbish dump. Garden
rubbish should be composted in your own gardens, not
thrown into fields. There are excellent Council run tips at

Figures published by BAA today (12 December 2007)
show that Stansted Airport handled 1.55m passengers last G A RD E N D E S I G N

Pilates will help to:-
Part of the reason for the slowdown is that Stansted biggest Improve Strength & Flexibility
customer, Ryanair, has withdrawn ten aircraft from service Improve Posture
at Stansted blaming higher airport landing charges Improve Balance
imposed by BAA earlier this year. Air Berlin , Stansted
third biggest customer, has also cut back on its Stansted Telephone Co-ordination & Circulation
operations. Meanwhile, Stansted's main transatlantic
carrier, Maxjet, is understood to be in financial difficulties 07887 808 928 Reduce Stress
having recorded a loss of $112m since it started operations
at Stansted two years ago. Last week it asked for trading in Absolute Pilates, Allen House, G27,
its shares to be immediately suspended "pending The Maltings,Sawbridgeworth, Herts CM21 9JX
clarification of its financial position." [Note 1]

The slowdown at Stansted is also fuelling fears that BAA
will announce job cuts at Stansted in the New Year as part
of a programme to reduce costs. Stop Stansted Expansion
(SSE) has learned that certain departments at Stansted are
shortly to be rationalised or relocated.

SSE Campaign Director Carol Barbone said: "We take no
comfort from the present uncertainty at Stansted. We have
always acknowledged that the airport is an important local
employer but there are risks in over-expansion, not least
the risk of the local economy becoming over-dependent on
a single employer. This is a vibrant and diverse local
economy and we should keep it that way. Nobody knows
what the future might hold and so it makes sense to avoid
having too many eggs in one basket."
