Unique Christmas traditions from
overseas

Christmas is celebrated in many different ways
around the world. So, here are some unique
examples of Christmas traditions from
overseas…

Japan

In Japan, it is customary for families to eat
Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) on Christmas Eve
or Christmas Day. The origins of this tradition
supposedly date back to the early 1970s, when
turkey was not widely available in Japan. At the
time, the manager of Japan’s first KFC heard
foreigners in his restaurant saying that they
missed the tradition of eating turkey at Christmas.
In response, he launched a special ‘party barrel’
chicken meal to be sold as a substitute
exclusively over the festive period. Not long after,
in 1974, KFC began a nationwide advertising
campaign in Japan with the slogan ‘Kurisumasu
ni wa kentakkii’ or ‘Kentucky for Christmas’. Now
millions of Japanese families choose to eat KFC
over the Christmas holidays.

Hatfield Regis Local History Society

President: William Gosling - Lord of the Manor

At our October meeting we had a talk from Martyn Lockwood on A Policeman’s Lot – Policing Essex.
After serving in Essex Police for 30 years he is now a trustee of the Essex Police Museum in
Chelmsford and on the Police Memorial Trust. The Essex Police Force was formed in 1840 after
Dunmow petitioned for a force to replace the Parish Constable system. They were rewarded with the
first purpose built police station for the county force, but a covenant on the land purchased precluded
the inclusion of cells in the station. The Metropolitan Corporation Act of 1835 allowed 5 Essex
boroughs to have their own independent force but they gradually joined Essex, the last being
Colchester in 1947. The first Chief Constable was John Bunch Bonnemaison McHardy (1840 – 1881)
who was a retired Naval Commander who rose to the rank of Admiral during his tenure! Initially the
force consisted of 100 Constables (on 20/- per week) and 15 Superintendents (on £80 per year) to
cover the county. Working hours were long at 12 hours a day, split 8 hours of daylight and 4 hours at
night, for 7 days a week. A rest day allowance was only introduced in 1914. Hatfield Broad Oak tended
to have 2 Constables based in the town and Hatfield Heath one. Whilst they were issued with a uniform
they did have to provide their own white cottons to perform cutlass drills in, just in case of major civil
unrest! The Museum does have a good selection of records going back to the first constables allowing
names to be allocated to faces when Collar Numbers are clear on photos of station group photos.
These records allowed Martyn to highlight some constable’s problems with discipline and pick out
names of those resident in both our villages, noting that Maurice Lee was in Hatfield Heath in 1937 and
transferred to Chelmsford in WW2 only to be killed in a bombing raid. The Home Office forced Essex to
introduce women police officers in 1947. This was an informative and entertaining review of our police
forces early history.
The previous Saturday we had a walk around Hatfield Broad Oak as a follow on from the Exhibition the
previous week. Led By Mark Ratcliff with a bundle of A4 size laminated post card views to show former
times and Edna Halls adding her memories of locations and residents, we had an informative 2 hour
stroll, starting at the village Pump and progressing down Cage Lane and spotting the buildings used by
Robert Lumley as the street scenes in The Gingerbread Man. After the Village Hall story, it was along
Cannon’s Lane to Broad Street and the villages oldest house – the thatched Sack House. Pausing
outside the Dukes Head to envisage houses that were shops and the location of the village fire pump, it
was up the High Street. Past the Chapel built in 1868, the Village School with the access to the WW2
cellar air raid shelter just visible and on to two locations of doctor’s surgeries at Bury House and The
Old Forge. The Chalks is the recently refurbished former Vicarage that in the 1890’s the Rev. Galpin
had the top floor added to allow accommodation of his musical students and presumably some of his
600 ancient musical instruments. We finished at the old Post House with some musing that a visit to
The Cock might be in order on another occasion to view its painted walls and perhaps some liquid
refreshment. Well done Mark and Edna.
Our next meeting will be on December 13th at 7.30pm in the Hatfield Heath URC Church Hall when
Christopher Parkinson returns and will talk about ‘The Nativity in Stained Glass’.

Men’s sheds

We’re thinking of setting up a Men’s Shed in Hatfield Heath as part of the Village Hall Trust.

It’s a space where men can undertake practical projects and hobbies, learn new skills, practice old
ones, share knowledge and enjoy a cuppa and some good-natured banter. We have a building…..and
the possibility of grant-funding to get it started…..but we just need to gauge interest.

To find out more about what men’s sheds are all about please visit: https://menssheds.org.uk/

If it’s something you’d be interested in please let us know by emailing
[email protected] or filling in the attached slip and popping it into the post box at the
village hall. (You may prefer to put this information onto a piece of paper and pop into a sealed
envelope).

Free Broadband Boost For Village Hall

Hatfield Heath Village Hall is the latest community hub to be supported by Gigaclear, the UK’s leading
rural, full fibre broadband provider.

During the past six years, more than 200 village halls across south and central England have achieved
community hub status, enabling thousands of people to benefit from free ultrafast broadband delivered
by Gigaclear to the heart of their communities.

Gigaclear’s community hub programme manager Andrew Lipski met members of the Hatfield Heath

Village Hall management committee recently to

officially launch the hall’s newly established hub

status. He said: “Gigaclear is committed to

extending its network to new, rural communities

that are far less likely to have a choice of supplier.

In many of these communities the village hall plays

an important role in residents’ lives providing a

valuable communal and social focus. “Not only

does the provision of free, ultrafast broadband

open up a range of new opportunities for residents

of all ages but it also enables the management

committee to explore new revenue streams as well

as access energy-saving smart devices.”

Andrew added: “We’re immensely proud of our Pictured: Hatfield Heath Village Hall management committee
members Mike Allen and Hilary Allen

community hubs and are delighted that Hatfield

Heath has become the latest beneficiary of the programme. Access to ultrafast broadband increases

the range of opportunities to run new and enriched activities in the village hall including streaming

events, holding homework clubs for schoolchildren and drop-in sessions for silver surfers.”

The village hall which was built in the 1970s provides superb facilities including a large main hall with
stage, a fully-equipped kitchen, licensed bar plus a committee room which will be hosting a warm room
over the winter months. Information on booking and the facilities can be found at the website

THE HUNDRED PARISHES SOCIETY
www.hundredparishes.org.uk

Before the middle of the twentieth century most people did not have watches; they relied on
public clocks which could be seen at railway stations, post offices and other public buildings -
and on church towers. This reminds me of the lines written in 1912 by the homesick poet,
Rupert Brooke:“Stands the church clock at ten to threeAnd is there honey still for tea?”The
Hundred Parishes has a variety of interesting church clocks. In Furneux Pelham, St Mary’s
clock is topped by Old Father Time and the words “Time Flies, Mind Your Business”. One
wonderswhat prompted those words to be included. The bell tower at Sheering has two clock
faces which were installed in the 1940s to remember those who served in the War. The north-
facing one tells us to “Work and Pray” whilst the west-facing, (pictured below), proclaims
“Today Is Yours”. The church at High Wych was built in 1861 to the design of local architect
George Edward Pritchett. Its clock is almost as wide as the thin flintstone tower on which it is
mounted. Hinxton possibly has our oldest church clock, believed to date from 1700 AD, albeit
extensively renovated in 1809 when a new face was fitted.Artist Eric Ravilious lived in Great
Bardfield and his wood engraving of the church of St
Mary the Virgin clearly shows the enormous clock
that was added to commemorate the coronation of
King George V in 1912. One assumes the residents
of Great Bardfield are never late for work or church.
The engraving has been adopted as the logo of The
Hundred Parishes.I hope you will keep an eye open
for the variety of clocks to be found around the
Hundred Parishes.The Hundred Parishes Society’s
trustees join me in wishing you a Merry Christmas.

Hatfield Heath Neighbourhood Plan

Dear all,

In this month’s edition of the magazine you will find a brochure that describes how a Neighbourhood
Plan works and what it can do for you. Also a short questionnaire for us to get things started by
understanding better what things matter most to you.

Our vision for the Parish for the next thirty years is as follows

• In 2052 Hatfield Heath will be a vibrant rural parish with a strong sense of community,
which has preserved and enhanced its distinctive village atmosphere and agricultural
character within the metropolitan green belt

• It will be a parish that is proud to have retained its historical rural character and heritage
assets within open countryside offering peace and tranquillity to its community and a
haven for all types of wildlife..

• Housing development will respect the village development boundaries and green belt,
be in keeping with this character and positively contribute towards it.

• Development will be organic, with an emphasis on small developments and affordable
properties for each age group.

• Transport, telecommunications and social facilities will have been improved and be
more widely available and integrated for all residents, young and old

• It will be recognised as a sustainable, comfortable and safe place to live for all.

Please take time to complete the questionnaire and return it to us. Thankyou. HHPC

Leisure Hour’s November Meeting - Medical Detection Dogs

We had a great turn out for this meeting with several visitors joining us for the first time.

First of all, a big thank you to everyone who donated raffle prizes and gave donations for the charity
which we heard about. The total amount we were able to pass over to Geoff Lambert was £141 which
he was very pleased with.

Geoff brought with him his companion dog called Buddy who has
been an “Ambassador Dog” for 12 years. He is now 14 years old and
at a recent check up was found to be deaf and have cataracts.
Buddy did what he was trained to do and that is to “Walk the room”
and sniff! He knows that he will get a reward at the end of this for his
work but Geoff had to keep the treat in the car so that Buddy
wouldn’t pester him through his talk. Having heard this talk many
times before, Buddy took some time out to sleep and kept us
entertained with his loud snoring!

The charity “Medical Detection Dogs” is world-wide but there is only
one centre in the UK which is based in Milton Keynes. Rather than
use pedigree dogs which can be highly strung, the charity selects
rescue dogs that are mainly mongrels. They are homed for around a year to get them settled and to
assess their suitability for this specific training. The cost of training, placing and supporting just one
Medical Dog is £29,000 and the charity relies on donations and bequests to meet these costs. We were
therefore very pleased to be able to contribute to this very valuable cause.

How does it work? Geoff explained how we all have an odour, but a healthy person has a different smell
to someone with an illness or condition. Not only that, as an example, a person with Diabetes has a
smell which is unique to them. The science behind this is amazing! Apparently, humans can detect
sugar in a solution of 1:25,000 (the size of a small beaker) while a dog can identify it in a ratio of 1:600
million (the volume of an Olympic sized swimming pool). The dogs are trained to detect a particular
odour and then alert their owner that they are in danger so that they can take whatever action they
need. People who suffer from such conditions as Diabetes Type 1, Parkinsons, Addisons and a whole
range of cancers, volunteer to give breath samples which are saved and stored for the purposes of
training the dogs to identify the particular smell that they need to recognise.

Geoff gave us various examples of how these dogs can save lives. For example, a person with Brittle
Diabetes cannot feel any sensation if their blood sugar gets
dangerously low. The Medical Detection Dog identifies the odour
early on and alerts the owner that they need to take their
medication. Someone with Narcolepsy does not know when they
will suddenly go into a state of sleep and could be in a dangerous
situation. Their dog will alert them before the occurrence so they
can lie down safely until the episode passes.

In tests it has been found that a Medical Detection Dog can detect
breast cancer in patients 18 months earlier than the mammogram
showed. Medical Detection Dogs have also been known to identify
Parkinsons disease up to 5 years before the patient is aware of the
symptoms and while there is no cure, it does mean the patient can
take medication earlier and hopefully have a better quality of life.
There are currently 150 dogs living with individuals with particular
conditions while 140 people are on a waiting list to receive a dog.
The pandemic naturally had a big impact on the training and
matching of dogs with patients.

If you were unable to come to the talk and would like to donate or sponsor a dog, please go to their
website https://www.medicaldetectiondogs.org.uk/

Our next talk is on December 7th when Mieke Fordesman will be giving a presentation on December
traditions in Holland which differ from the ones we have in the UK at Christmas.
Do come along and join us at the URC hall for 2pm. Entrance £1:50 as a visitor

Schoolreaders Needed to Spread the Joy of Reading
in Hertfordshire Schools

Children’s literacy charity Schoolreaders is looking for more volunteers who can help spread the joy of
reading to children in Hertfordshire primary schools – especially around Hatfield.

A recent survey1 of young people by the National Literacy Trust (NLT) revealed that reading enjoyment
had reached a 15 year low, rallying slightly in the pandemic before declining again by 2022, especially
amongst those from disadvantaged backgrounds and amongst boys.

Furthermore, the Annual Literacy survey found that fewer than 1 in 2 children aged 8 to 18 enjoyed
reading with only 28% reading daily.

Schoolreaders is looking for volunteers of all ages – from students to retirees - who can listen to
children read in a local primary school, especially at those schools where children require support the
most.

Worryingly, 1 in 4 children leave primary school every summer unable to read to the expected standard2
and the Schoolreaders scheme is now more in demand than ever, particularly to help those children
most disadvantaged following the education disruption caused by Covid lockdowns.

Schoolreaders volunteers act as trusted role models in the classroom alongside the class teachers, not
only helping children improve their reading but also by being a positive influence.
Schoolreaders volunteers are asked to listen to children read once a week during term time and to
commit to an academic year. By applying now new volunteers will be matched as quickly as possible to
a partner school and be ready to start once they have completed a mandatory DBS check and virtual
safeguarding training.

Jane Whitbread, founder of Schoolreaders, adds, “Children who leave primary school unable to read
well can’t access their secondary schooling fully which will disadvantage them for life. One in seven
adults have poor literacy and cannot read instructions on a medicine label or a bus timetable or fill in a
job application form. Working together we can change this.

“There is no substitute for face-to-face interaction and support when it comes to reading. Our
volunteers provide a crucial supplement to classroom teaching and are welcomed by schools - and the
children. 95% of children in our scheme improved their reading performance and over 90% their
reading enjoyment after time with a Schoolreaders volunteer which is so valuable3. If more children gain
pleasure from reading from an early age and their reading fluency and confidence improves too,
communities and Society will reap the benefits.”

need in Hertfordshire, visit Schoolreaders.org
