Giving Beds – Changing Lives 40 Winks Foundation 30 years ago Slumberland’s Ken Larson thought about how their company could give more to the communities they were in than ust financially-the answer was, Why not give the product and expertise we are best known for? Why not give a new bed to those who don’t have one. And so in 1991, our biggest event of the year began, “Homes for the Holidays”. Giving new beds to children and families who are sleeping on the floor. As we continued with our “Homes for the Holidays” annual December event, we found that a high percentage of our beds were going to children who were sleeping on the floor. Now most of you have probably slept on the floor at some point in your life, camping on hard ground, or maybe moving into a new place and waiting for your furniture to arrive. But how would you feel if you slept on the floor every single night? How might that affect your performance every day? How might that put a child behind, at risk, not preforming well—-at school, with friends, in life? Following our Homes for the Holidays events we began getting calls, “We need a bed. Do you still give beds to those in need even if it is not the holidays?” So over a dozen years ago our nonprofit “40 Winks Foundation” began. It exists primarily to give new beds to kids sleeping on the floor. This is a program that nonprofit charities partner with their Slumberland store to request beds for children in need. The Big Stone County 4-H Federation selected the Big Stone County Sheriffs Department as the 2023 “4-H Friend of the Year”. The Sheriff’s department has partnered with the 4-H program on a variety of youth development opportunities. They were instrumental in helping the program with the “Hanging Out onMy Own” program which helped prepare youth on taking care of themselves when home alone after school or during the summer and how to prepare and react in case of emergencies. “Thank you to a friend of 4-H who is always willing to go the extra mile in contributing to our 4-H programwhen needed,” says Suzanne Souza, Local 4-H Extension Educator. 4-H Leader Nikki Twedt was awarded the “4-H Volunteer of the Year.” Nikki has been instrumental in helping grow the 4-H WHEP (Wildlife Habitat Education Program), by serving as a coach. Nikki has spent many hours with youth in the fall andwinter, teaching 4-H Clubmembers about wildlife in the area, habitats and how to prepare a wildlife management plan. Nikki helpswith the 4-HHorse project and serves as a assistant leader for the Clever Clovers. “Thank you, Nikki for your commitment to our youth in the 4- H Shooting Sports program!” Arnold Jibben was recognized as our “Youth of the Year” for his dedication as a youth leader, taking on extra projects in the 4-H Food Stand and serving as a mentor for younger youth. The Clever Clovers 4-H Club received “Club of the Year” for their involvement in activities and events throughout the year. The Eager Beavers 4-H Club received “Top ClubMembership of the Year”. 2023-2024 4-H Federation Officers were installed.
