5 Reasons to NOT vote for Tamara St. John in the Republican Primary Election June 4, 2024 for District 1 House of Representative The following is Tamara St Johns 2024 Voting Record: 1. SB 201 - voted to tear down local control for counties, cities, and townships. SB 201 requires the PUC to strike down any local ordinance for a pipeline setback that they deem "Unreasonable". This is an attack on local control. 2. HB 1140 - Revise law to allow counties to summarily reject citizen's petitions and declare an emergency. This bill would allow counties to reject a petition from the citizens to change local ordinances; Tamara St John voted yes thus removing the power from the people. 3. HB 1219 -- Prohibit the exercise of eminent domain for the construction of pipelines carrying Co2. Eminent domain should only be used for public projects like roads, waterlines and other things to benefit the public. Tamara St John voted against this bill that would have stopped eminent domain for private gain. St John is more willing to support large foreign owned corporations than the landowners of her district. 4. HB 1155 - - Tamara St John was one of only two Republicans in the judiciary commitee to support HB 1155. This bill is straight from Berkeley, California and sponsored by ultra liberal Kameron Nelson from Sioux Falls. This legislation would have made "homophobia, Islamophobia, sexism, transphobia, or anti-Indian, anti-black, anti-immigrant, or anti-refugee sentiment" an unfair or discriminatory practice in SD. 5. HB 1259 - Tamara St John voted yes to the 2024 budget that increased government spending by a whopping $135 million. In my opinion, after seeing St John's 2024 voting record, she clearly does NOT represent the conservative vote from District 1. I urge you to vote for Christopher Reder and Logan Manhart for State Representatives of District 1. Thank you, a concerned conservative from District 1, Gary C. Sheldon Sisseton, SD. 57262 Letter to the Editor: Re: Voting on a Resolution Establishing a Road and Bridge Tax Levy in Roberts County. My reasons to vote NO on the proposed tax levy: 1. I have been retired over 20 years and have not had any raises on my retirement income. Social Security raises have been minimal. 2. Cost of living overall has gone up 25% to 30%. My utilities have gone up 40% in the last ten years. My property taxes are already set to go up more than 50%. 3. Federal taxes will have to go up because the United States is 35 Trillion in debt. Money has to come from somewhere?? 4. There is no "sunset clause" in this levy, which means it will never go away. 5. In my opinion, the tax levy which is an increase of ninety cents per one thousand dollars of taxable value on property is unreasonable at this time for any tax paying citizen. I urge the voters of Roberts County to vote NO on this referendum. 6. To summarize my letter, I am aware the roads and bridges in Roberts County need expensive repairs. Instead of increasing the tax burden of Roberts County taxpayers by this proposed levy, why not budget additional funds from the increased taxes, for the roads and bridges. This is your choice as a taxpayer and voter in Roberts County. Thank you, Gary C. THE HISTORY OF MEMORIAL DAY Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. Over two dozen cities and towns claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day. While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it’s difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. Regardless of the exact date or location of its origins, one thing is clear – Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle. On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every state on the last Monday in May with Congressional passage of the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 – 363). This helped ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays, though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19th in Texas; April 26th in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Honoring our Servicemen & Women Protecting our Freedom Honoring our 547 US Hwy.12 • Ortonville 320-839-2911 After Hours Call 320-305-1021 We thank the brave men and women of our military for their dedication and sacrifice. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon, their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all. Since the late 1950s on the Thursday before Memorial Day, 1,200 soldiers of the 3rd U.S. Infantry place small American flags at each of the more than 260,000 gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery. They then patrol 24 hours a day during the weekend to ensure that each flag remains standing. In 1951, the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of St. Louis began placing flags on the 150,000 graves at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery as an annual Good Turn, a practice that continues to this day. More recently, beginning in 1998, on the Saturday before the observed day for Memorial Day, the Boys Scouts and Girl Scouts place a candle at each of approximately 15,300 grave sites of soldiers buried at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park on Marye’s Heights (the Luminaria Program). And in 2004, Washington D.C. held its first Memorial Day parade in over 60 years. THE VIETNAM WALL The Memorial Wall, designed by Maya Lin, is made up of two gabbro walls 246 feet 9 inches (75.21 m) long.[4][5] The walls are sunk into the ground, with the earth behind them. At the highest tip (the apex where they meet), they are 10.1 feet (3.1 m) high, and they taper to a height of 8 inches (20 cm) at their extremities. Stone for the wall came from Bangalore, Karnataka, India, and was deliberately chosen because of its reflective quality. Stone cutting and fabrication was done in Barre, Vermont. Stones were then shipped to Memphis, Tennessee where the names were etched. The etching was completed using a photoemulsion and sandblasting process. The negatives used in the process are in storage at the Smithsonian Institution. When a visitor looks upon the wall, his or her reflection can be seen simultaneously with the engraved names, which is meant to symbolically bring the past and present together. One wall points toward the Washington Monument, the other in the direction of the Lincoln Memorial, meeting at an angle of 125° 12. Each wall has 72 panels, 70 listing names (numbered 1E through 70E and 70W through 1W) and 2 very small blank panels at the extremities. There is a pathway along the base of the Wall, where visitors may walk. One panel of 'The Wall', displaying some of the names of fallen U.S. service members from the Vietnam War. Inscribed on the walls with the Optima typeface are the names of servicemen who were either confirmed to be KIA (Killed in Action) or remained classified as MIA (Missing in Action) when the walls were constructed in 1982. They are listed in chronological order, starting at the apex on panel 1E in 1959 (although it was later discovered that the first casualties were military advisers who were killed by artillery fire in 1957), moving day by day to the end of the eastern wall at panel 70E, which ends on May 25, 1968, starting again at panel 70W at the end of the western wall which completes the list for May 25, 1968, and returning to the apex at panel 1W in 1975. Symbolically, this is described as a "wound that is closed and healing." Information about rank, unit, and decorations are not given. The wall listed 58,191 names when it was completed in 1983; as of May 2011, there are 58,272 names, including FOOD-N-FUEL 103 W. 4th Ave., Milbank • 605-432-6678 A Salute to our Troops & Veterans 200 E. According to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, "there is no definitive answer to exactly how many, but there could be as many as 38 names of personnel who survived, but through clerical errors, were added to the list of fatalities provided by the Department of Defense."[6] Directories are located on nearby podiums so that visitors may locate specific names. 481422 Schmidts Road Jeny & Adam Koplin 605-432-6911 www.schmidtslanding.com E Hwy 12 Milbank, SD 605.432.9111 • www.midwestpowersports.net Remember - our fallen heroes. Legionnaires dedicate themselves to perpetuating the principles for which they have fought, to inculcating civic responsibility in the nation, to preserving the history of their participation in American wars, and to binding together as comrades with all those who have fought. They also pledge to defend law and order, to develop "a one hundred percent Americanism," and to help the less fortunate through government and private programs. Four Allied Expeditionary Forces officers-of-the-line informally started the Legion in February 1919 while still on active duty in Paris, France. These founders—Col. Theodore Roosevelt Jr., Lt. Col. George S. White, Maj. Eric Fisher Wood, and Lt. Col. William J. ("Wild Bill") Donovan—sought both to bolster soldier morale during the post-armistice period and to provide an alternative to other veterans' groups being set up in the United States. By 1925, the Legion achieved all the programs and policies it maintains today. The Legion assumed the role of representative for all former doughboys even though its 1920 membership of 840,000 represented only about 18.5 percent of eligible veterans. At the onset of every war or military action since World War I (1914–1918), the Legion has persuaded Congress to amend its incorporation to allow veterans of those conflicts to join the Legion. Pursuit of its goal of "Americanism" led the Legion into many controversies. Legionnaires have striven to rid school textbooks and public libraries' shelves of perceived alien, Communist, syndicalist, or anarchist influences. During the "Red Scare" of 1919–20, four Legionnaires died in a shootout with Industrial Workers of the World organizers at Centralia, Washington. Legionnaires covertly spied on unsuspecting American citizens for the congressional House Un-American Activities Committee and the Federal Bureau of Investigation from the 1930s until the 1970s. The American Legion's advocacy of military preparedness started in 1919. During the politically isolationist 1920s, this policy made the Legion unpopular with many, as did its continued support of universal military training into the 1970s. Similarly, its condemnation of U.S. participation in United Nations Economic and Social Council activities and its call for a total blockade of communist Cuba during the 1960s sparked debates. Representatives of the Legion spoke in support of a stronger military at every War/Defense department appropriation hearing from 1919 through 2002. Through its strenuous efforts to obtain benefits for veterans, the American Legion earned the reputation by the late 1930s of being one of the nation's most effective interest groups. Its demand for a bonus for World War I veterans, finally met in 1936 over the objections of four successive Presidents, and its promotion of the GI Bill of Rights for World War II veterans, achieved in 1944, testify to its highly publicized dedication to all veterans—not just its members. The Legion practically created the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and its predecessors. Starting in 1978, the Legion demanded medical and monetary benefits for veterans exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam. The Legion works almost as hard to prevent similar beneficial programs for the nonveteran population. Other, less controversial, activities project the Legion's preferred image. The local posts sponsor individual teams for the nationwide American Legion baseball league. Each state organization operates an annual hands-on political seminar for high school students. The posts report to the departments who, in turn, send representatives to the annual national convention. The convention sets policy for the Legion and elects the National Commander and the National Executive Committee. The latter directs the Legion from national headquarters at Indianapolis, Indiana, between conventions. The Legion's charter forbids formal political activity by the organization or its elected officers. It was authorized by Congress in 1986 and dedicated by U.S. Pres. Bill Clinton and South Korean Pres. Kim Young Sam on July 27, 1995, the 42nd anniversary of the signing of the cease-fire that ended hostilities. The memorial is located on a 2.2-acre (0.9-hectare) site at the western end of the Mall, southeast of the Lincoln Memorial and on the south side of the Reflecting Pool, across from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. A competition held for the design was won in 1989 by a team from the architecture school of Pennsylvania State University. The design was changed during the approval phase of the project, raising objections from the Pennsylvania State team, who filed a lawsuit; they ultimately lost their suit and removed their names from the project. The final design was constructed as modified by the architecture firm Cooper-Lecky Architects. Later on-site modifications were made to improve accessibility and to add a computerized honour roll of those killed in action, missing in action, or taken prisoners of war. The central aspect of the memorial is a group of 19 stainless steel sculptures by Frank C. Gaylord II. They are larger-than-life-size figures (approximately 7 ft 3 in [221 cm] in height) constituting an idealized patrol of U.S. servicemen representing the army, the navy, the air force, and the Marine Corps. The figures are spread across a statues, creates the illusion of 38 figures, a phenomenon intended in part as a reference to the 38th parallel, the site of the eventual cease-fire boundary between North Korea and South Korea. Along the path on the north side of the statues is a granite curb on which are inscribed the names of the 22 countries of the United Nations that sent combat units or medical support to the conflict in support of the South Korean side. www.hahlerauto.com 605-345-4792 • 800-789-2277 East Hwy 12 • Webster, SD “If we dont’ have, we can get it” World Class Service Home Town Friendliness HAHLER DAVE HAHLER AUTOMOTIVE, INC. Federal law stipulates many aspects of flag etiquette. The section of law dealing with American Flag etiquette is generally referred to as the Flag Code. The flag should be lighted at all times, either by sunlight or by an appropriate light source. The flag should be flown in fair weather, unless the flag is designed for inclement weather use. The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal. The flag should not be used for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top. The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard. The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations. The flag should never have any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind placed on it, or attached to it. The flag should never be used for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything. When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously. When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner. We trace our roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service. Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves. In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations that would eventually band together and become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. Today, membership stands at nearly 1.7 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliary. Our voice was instrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration, development of the national cemetery system, in the fight for compensation for Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange and for veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome. In 2008, we won a long-fought victory with the passing of a GI Bill for the 21st Century, giving expanded educational benefits to America's active duty service members, and members of the guard and reserves, fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. We were the driving force behind the Veterans Access and Accountability Act of 2014, and continually fight for improved VA medical centers services for women veterans. Besides helping fund the creation of the Vietnam, Korean War, World War II and Women in Military Service memorials, in 2005 the VFW became the first veterans' organization to contribute to building the new Disabled Veterans for Life Memorial, which opened in November 2010. And in 2015, we became the first supporter of the National Desert Storm War Memorial which is planned for construction at our nation's capital. We have many programs and services that work to support veterans, service members and their families, as well as communities worldwide. Please check out our latest fact sheet or spend some time browsing our site to learn why No One Does More For Veterans. Our Core Values: Always put the interests of our members first Treat donors as partners in our cause Promote patriotism Honor military service Ensure the care of veterans and their families Serve our communities Promote a positive image of the VFW Respect the diversity of veteran opinions With gratitude, we honor America’s fallen soldiers. Thanks For your service and sacrifice HISTORY OF THE WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL President Clinton signed Public Law 103-32 on May 25, 1993, authorizing the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) to establish aWorld War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., or ts environs. It is the first national memorial dedicated to all who served during World War II and acknowledging the commitment and achievement of the entire nation. The memorial honors the 16 million who served in the armed forces of the U.S. during World War II, the more than 400,000 who died, and the millions who supported the war effort from home. Symbolic of the defining event of the 20th Century, the memorial is a monument to the spirit, sacrifice, and commitment of the American people to the common defense of the nation and to the broader causes of peace and freedom from tyranny throughout the world. It will inspire future generations of Americans, deepening their appreciation of what the World War II generation accomplished in securing freedom and democracy. Above all, the memorial stands as an important symbol of American national unity, a timeless reminder of the moral strength and awesome power that can flow when a free people are at once united and bonded together in a common and just cause. Model of the Site The first step in establishing the memorial was the selection of an appropriate site. Congress provided legislative authority for siting the memorial in the prime area of the national capital, known as Area I, which includes the National Mall. The National Park Service, the Commission of Fine Arts, and the National Capital Planning Commission approved selection of the Rainbow Pool site at the east end of the Reflecting Pool between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. President Clinton dedicated the memorial site during a formal ceremony on Veterans Day 1995. ABMC engaged the General Services Administration’s (GSA) Public Buildings Service to act as its agent to manage the memorial project. The design submitted by Friedrich St.Florian, an architect based in Providence, R.I., was selected as one of six semi-finalists in an open, national competition. Leo A Daly, an international architecture firm, assembled the winning team with St.Florian as the design architect. The team also included George E. Hartman of Hartman-Cox Architects, landscape architect Oehme van Sweden & Associates, sculptor Ray Kaskey, and stone carver and letterer Nick Benson. St.Florian’s memorial design concept was approved by the Commission of Fine Arts and the National Capital Planning Commission in the summer of 1998. The commissions approved the preliminary design in 1999, the final architectural design and several ancillary elements in 2000, granite selections in 2001, and sculpture and inscriptions in 2002 and 2003. The memorial was funded primarily by private contributions. The fund-raising campaign was led by National Chairman Senator Bob Dole and National CoChairman Frederick W. Smith. Senator Dole, a World War II veteran seriously wounded on the battlefield and twice decorated with the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, was the Republican nominee for president in 1996 and the longest-serving Republican Leader in the U.S. Senate. Frederick W. Smith is chairman, president and chief executive officer of FedEx Corporation, a global transportation and logistics holding company. He is a graduate of Yale and a former U.S. Marine Corps officer, and serves on the boards of various transport, industry and civic organizations. The memorial received more than $197 million in cash and pledges. This total includes $16 million provided by the federal government. Construction began in September 2001. The memorial opened to the public on April 29, 2004, and was dedicated on Saturday, May 29, 2004. The memorial became part of the National Park System on Nov. 1, 2004, when it was transferred from the American Battle Monuments Commission to the National Park Service, which now operates and maintains the memorial. After coming off a great campaign with the gracious, caring community, the 2023-24 Campaign was able to allocate out $181,200 to 21 agencies that applied for grants last year. We are looking forward to another successful 2024-25 Campaign. “Applications have been mailed to the 2023 recipients as well as any groups that requested one,” says Wellnitz. Completed applications with all supporting materials are due back by Friday, June 14th. All organizations applying for funds will be called between June 27 - 31 to set up an interview on Tuesday, July 16 and Thursday, July 18. The interviews will help facilitate a closer relationship between the Combined Appeal Committee and the recipients. Community non-profit agencies are encouraged to apply for a grant from Combined Appeal by calling the Milbank High School Educational Foundation at 605-432-9000 or by e-mail [email protected] for an application packet. The Milbank High School Educational Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to improving the quality of life in Grant County.
