(DPAA) announced that
Navy Seaman 2nd Class
Laverne A. Nigg, 23,
killed during World War
II, was accounted for on
April 22, 2021.

Laverne A. “Budd” Nigg was the great On Dec. 7, 1941, Nigg
uncle of Jamie LaRoche. He was killed was assigned to the
battleship USS
on the USS Oklahoma during the Oklahoma, which was
attack on Pearl Harbor. moored at Ford Island,
Pearl Harbor, when the
ship was attacked by
Japanese aircraft. The
USS Oklahoma
sustained multiple
torpedo hits, which
caused it to quickly
capsize. The attack on
the ship resulted in the
deaths of 429 crewmen,
including Nigg.

The Nigg family was family farm near Peever, SD, and entered the Navy from Browns Valley (Traverse
notified in September County) MN. Nigg served on the Oklahoma alongside three of his cousins, all of
2021 that Pearl Harbor whom survived the Pearl Harbor attack. Family members are currently working
MIA/KIA Laverne Alious with the DPAA to return his remains and funeral services are tentatively planned
