2019 Champions - 2020 Annual | 51

52 | 2020 Annual – 2020 Championships

Conditions of Play: Key Changes for 2020

Several key changes were made to the 2020 CoP. One key aspect is to
recognize that the first priority of Provincial Playdowns is: “Identifying the best
players to represent Ontario at national championships, with the end goal of
winning as many medals as possible for Ontario.” Towards this end;

 The Open Fours will remain OPEN. (Deadline: May 1, 2020)
 The Pairs are OPEN this year. (Deadline: May 26, 2020 with an

exception to the Refund Policy.)
 The Singles are OPEN this year. (Deadline: June 6,2020)
A second key change is to recognize the importance of Playdowns in developing
new and novice bowlers. Towards that end;

 We are introducing the Novice Mixed Combo 4’s: They will be playing
Fours and Men’s and Women’s Pairs in the 2-4-2 format. Teams will be
pre-drawn for all 8 games. The 1 team with the total high match points
will be declared the winner. All games will be 10 ends.

 We are adjusting the Novice Singles: District Play will be to 16 shots
and Provincial play to 18 shots to allow Novice bowlers to gain stamina
rather than it being an endurance test. We’ve also addressed some of
inequities in the different Clubs sizes. In Club playdowns: for every 3
novices that compete – 1 can go to the Districts.

 For both Novice events, we are encouraging Coaches to help bowlers to
prepare and compete.

Finally, to address the gap between Novice Playdowns and other Provincial
Playdowns and create another developmental opportunity;

 We have brought back the regular Triples. Note that it is only a
Provincial event; there is no National play at this time. All players must
be from the same District. And this event is 3 Bowl Triples. The game
length is 16 ends. Those who have competed in the Majors in the last 5
years will not be eligible to compete in the Triples.

 The other Disciplines (Mixed Pairs and Senior Triples) remain
essentially the same.

DID YOU KNOW

All athletes may identify with the gender of their choice in entering OLBA
championships. Athletes should also be aware that they will be required
to abide by the conditions of play that may or may not deem them
eligible to compete depending upon the rules and doping guidelines for
other levels of competition. (e.g. BCB or World Bowls events).

Did you know...

The first Dominion tournament was held on the lawn of the Royal Canadian
Yacht Club on “Hiawatha Island”, Toronto on Tuesday, the 5th of July, 1892. The
tournament grew exponentially and in 1920, 208 complete men’s fours teams,
(832 players), competed in one event, marking, I believe, the largest entry in
terms of individuals in one event in Canada. Entries came from all over Canada,
as well as teams from Buffalo, Detroit, Chicago, New York City, Boston and
more.
