Course Rationale
This course is offered to expose students to the fundamental skills in measurement and
test instrument for their preparation to face future career.

Course Synopsis
This course provides strong knowledge on measurement and testing electronic
instruments.

Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, the students should be able to:
1. Calibrate most of the measurement and test instrument. (P3)
2. Justify the value of measurements with the test instrument according to requirement.

UNIT 2: INTRODUCTION TO MEASUREMENT AND TEST

2.0 INTRODUCTION OF UNIT 2

Why do we have to learn about measurement and test instruments? The multimeter,
function generator, oscilloscope and power supply are very important instruments in
order to measure electrical quantities such as voltage, current and resistance.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The objective of this unit is to:

1. Provide exposure and understanding on the basic measurement and test
instruments

LEARNING OUTCOMES

After completing this unit, the students should be able to:

1. Calibrate most of the measurement and test instrument.(P3)

2. Justify the value of measurements with the test instrument according to requirement.

2.1 MULTI METER

A multimeter is an electronic instrument used to measure the three basic electrical
characteristics: voltage, current and resistance. It has multiple functions and acts like
ohmmeter, voltmeter and ammeter and also used for household wiring, electric motors,
testing batteries and power supplies. The multimeter is a handheld device with a needle
over a numeric LCD digital display for indication purpose. It is also used to test
continuity between two points in an electrical circuit. There are three types of
multimeters made available in the market such as: digital multimeter, analog multimeter
and fluke multimeter.

2.2 FUNCTION GENERATOR

A signal generator is also named as pitch generator, function generator or frequency
generator is an electronic device used for generating electronic signals either in the
analog or digital domains (repeating or non-repeating signals). Signal generators are
used in testing, designing and repairing electro acoustic or electronic devices.

2.3 OSCILLOSCOPE

The oscilloscope is an electronic test instrument that constantly obverses varying
voltage signals as a two dimensional plot of one or more signals as a function of time.
The other names for oscilloscope are oscillograph, cathode ray oscilloscope or digital
storage oscilloscope. It is also used for converting non electrical signals such as
vibration or sound into voltages and then displays the result.

2.4 POWER SUPPLY

A power supply is an electrical device that supplies electric power to an electrical load.
The primary function of a power supply is to convert electric current from a source to the
correct voltage, current, and frequency to power the load. As a result, power supplies
are sometimes referred to as electric power converters. Some power supplies are
separate standalone pieces of equipment, while others are built into the load appliances
itself.
