INFORMATION ABOUT Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi
1. Who was Al Khwarizmi and what did he do?
Muslim mathematician and astronomer whose major works introduced
Hindu-Arabic numerals and the concepts of algebra into European
mathematics. Latinized versions of his name and of his most famous
book title live on in the terms algorithm and algebra.
2. What is his Contributions ?
Al-Khwārizmī's contributions to mathematics, geography, astronomy,
and cartography established the basis for innovation in algebra and
trigonometry. His systematic approach to solving linear and quadratic
equations led to algebra, a word derived from the title of his book on
the subject, "The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion
and Balancing".

INFORMATION ABOUT Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi
3. Why is Al- Khwarizmi famous ?
Al-Khwārizmī is famous for his mathematical works, which introduced Hindu-Arabic
numerals and algebra to European mathematicians. In fact, the words algorithm and
algebra come from his name and the title of one of his works, respectively.
4. Why is Al- Khwarizmi sucess ?
Al-Khwārizmī's major accomplishments were the books he wrote on mathematics and
science. His mathematical books introduced the ideas of algebra and Hindu-Arabic
numerals to Western mathematicians during the Middle Ages. His scientific works
concerned geography and astronomy.
5. Why is Al-Khwarizmi the father of algebra?
Around 820 CE he was appointed as the astronomer and head of the library of the
House of Wisdom in Baghdad. Al-Khwarizmi's popularizing treatise on algebra (The
Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing, c. 813–833 CE)
presented the first systematic solution of linear and quadratic equations.

6. Al- Khwarizmi invented algebra and why?
Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi lived in Baghdad, around 780 to 850 CE (or
AD). He was one of the first to write about algebra (using words, not letters). Around 825 he
wrote the book "Hisab Al-jabr w'al-muqabala", from which we get the word algebra (meaning
'restoration of broken parts').
7. Who invented the sine quadrant ?
The sine quadrant was invented bt Muhammad ibn Musa al - Khwarizmi in the 9th century at
the House of Wisdom in Baghdad . The others types were the universal quadrant and the
astrolabe quadrant . During the middle ages the knowledge of these instruments spread to
Europe .

Quotes by Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi
“➢ When I consider what people generally
want in calculating, I found that it always
is a number. I also observed that every
number is composed of units, and that
any number may be divided into units.
Moreover, I found that every number
which may be expressed from one to ten,
surpasses the preceding by one unit:
afterwards the ten is doubled or tripled
just as before the units were: thus arise
twenty, thirty, etc. until a hundred: then
the hundred is doubled and tripled in the
same manner as the units and the tens,
up to a thousand;… so forth to the utmost
limit of numeration.
