10 ...continues on next page In this episode of Architects ወርሃዊ, we shift to a virtual session featuring Yonas Assefa, Vice Secretary and Chairperson of the Ethics Committee within the AEA, whose presentation focuses on the subject of Eco-Resilient Smart City Arbaminch (SAM 2064) E.C. This 50-year urban development program aims to establish Arbaminch as a prominent Eco-Resilient Smart city and a noteworthy tourism destination in Africa. The session is divided into two parts, starting with the presentation and followed by a Q&A session the following day. The Smart Arbaminch (SAM-2064) is a 50-year urban development initiative led by volunteers. It aims to transform Arbaminch into a leading environmentally friendly smart city and a premier tourism destination in Ethiopia. The program includes redesigning the urban plan and implementing 16 innovative projects that will shape the future of the city. With a projected population of 5,000,000 by 2060, the program aims to create around 100,000 new job opportunities, making Arbaminch one of Ethiopia's major cities. The estimated cost of the program is 353 million USD, with funding expected from various sources such as the local community, the private sector, international investors, the government, and international donors. The implementation of the program will be a collaborative effort involving the SAM-2025 program office, Arbaminch University, and the Arbaminch city administration. Phase One (2014-2018): The first stage encompasses the development of the revised master plan, canal work, construction of the football stadium and academy, roads and bridges, the establishment of the forest belt, creation of the botanic garden, and formation of museum rings. The revised master plan introduces development along adjacent satellite cities as one entire urban system, while the canal work designates the location for the Central Business District (CBD) along with riverled development. The football stadium and academy are also designed to meet CAF and FIFA standards, aiming to enhance the overall football level of Ethiopia. Phase Two (2015-2019): This phase focuses on the development of projects such as Wisdom Valley, food and fruit courts, government quarters, traditional shopping centers, and the business and financial district, as well as the gallery and art village. This phase also includes a Technological Valley. It aims to establish an advanced technology center that will serve as a hub for innovation and skill development, empowering the younger generation to thrive alongside technological advancements. It will play a crucial role in controlling the traffic system of the city and overseeing the operation of autonomous buildings, such as the airport within Arbaminch. 12 ...continued from previous page Yonas Assefa: The expansion occurred naturally and would have continued in an unplanned manner if left unchecked. Our research and plans aim to provide structure and form to this elastic growth, ensuring that it is guided by careful analysis and thoughtful considerations. By leveraging our research findings, we strive to shape the expansion in a way that optimizes the city's development and promotes a sustainable urban environment. Question #3: How many individuals participated in the research and development process? Yonas Assefa: The research and development process involved the participation of approximately 25-30 professionals, primarily consisting of university lecturers. Additionally, we sought inputs from other fields such as environmental science and agriculture to ensure a holistic approach to the project. Question #4: Was there public communication about the development plans? How was the feedback? Yonas Assefa: Phase one of the project was shared with the public, and the feedback was highly positive. Public discussions on projects are rare in the city, making this a promising start. Question #5: Besides the master plan, how much of the work has been completed or is currently in progress? Yonas Assefa: The master plan has been finalized, marking a significant milestone in the project. In addition to that, detailed plans have been established, road projects have commenced, and certain projects have been allocated government budgets. These accomplishments demonstrate substantial progress in both the planning and implementation phases of the overall development. Question #6: The term "SMART" is often associated with technologically advanced systems, but you mentioned its applicability in the design world. Could you explain what makes the development "SMART"? Yonas Assefa: Indeed, Arbaminch is a city characterized by a diverse range of climatic zones and a rich biodiversity, encompassing a wellrounded ecosystem. Therefore, to create a "SMART" development, we had to consider and incorporate the existing elements of the city into the design, rather than imposing an alien development. By leveraging the natural assets and resources of Arbaminch, we aim to create a sustainable and ecologically conscious development that harmonizes with its surroundings. This approach ensures that Phase Three (2016-2025): In the final phase of the program, various projects are implemented to advance the city's development. These include the construction of low-cost and smart residential houses, the improvement of forest infrastructure and amenities, the creation of artificial lake beaches, the introduction of transportation installations on the lake, the establishment of sustainable industries like a paper and timber factory and a biofuel factory, as well as the development of government quarters. These initiatives aim to provide affordable housing options, enhance accessibility and quality of life, promote recreational opportunities, support environmental sustainability, and cater to the needs of government officials. Following the comprehensive presentation, the stage was set for a question and answer (Q&A) session scheduled for the following day - June 1st, 2023. The presentation provided a thorough overview of the Smart Arbaminch (SAM-2064) program, highlighting the various projects and initiatives aimed at transforming the city into a sustainable and inclusive urban environment. Question #1: Has there been a previous comprehensive study conducted on this scale? What was the extent of the existing master plan? Yonas Assefa: The previous master plan only accounted for two sub-cities, and as the city expanded in an unstructured manner towards neighboring satellite cities, it became evident that a new master plan was needed. The purpose of the new master plan is to provide a clear framework for the city's expansion and potential integration with the satellite cities. Additionally, it aims to leverage the abundant land resources available and enhance them with necessary amenities, ensuring a sustainable and welldeveloped urban environment. Question #2: You mentioned that the city outskirts are now converging towards the city center due to the expansion. Did this occur organically or was it aligned with the research?

article 13 the development is not only technologically advanced but also culturally and environmentally sensitive, making it truly "SMART" in the design context. Question #7: Have you considered the potential impact of political and other external factors on the execution of the development? How do you plan to track the project amidst such changes? Yonas Assefa: We are aware that there may be factors beyond our control that could influence the project's execution. That is why we began by developing a comprehensive master plan, which serves as the foundation for the overall development and its projects. By designing the master plan with a clear focus on the 16 identified projects, we have established a roadmap that helps ensure their successful implementation. Furthermore, these developments are not solely reliant on the government's efforts. They also serve as a means to guide incoming investments in the city, promoting collective urban growth. As part of this endeavor, the construction of 100,000 affordable homes has progressed beyond the agreement stage. These homes will be built through a public-private partnership, providing immediate solutions to accommodate the growing population of Arbaminch. By embracing such partnerships, we can leverage external resources and expertise to address the housing needs of the city and foster sustainable and inclusive urban development. Question #8: What channels do you intend to utilize to raise awareness about this eco-resilient city development? Yonas Assefa: Given the extensive list of projects within the development, we plan to organize a three-day event that encompasses a design lab, a city tour, and visits to satellite cities. This event will bring together artists, architects, city administrators, and city residents, creating a platform for collaborative discussions and knowledge-sharing. By involving various stakeholders, we aim to gather diverse perspectives and inputs to contribute to a more humane design and further enrich the development plan. Following the brief presentation and Q&A session the 47th Architects ወርሃዊ came to an end with closing remarks from the program host Semawit Ayele. This episode holds special significance as it sheds light on new developments beyond the capital city of Addis Ababa, focusing on rural areas that possess exceptional natural potential. The growth of these habitats and urban areas will contribute to a balanced and steady upward trajectory for the entire country. We extend our gratitude to all those who attended this session, and until we meet again, stay inspired!

22 IMAGE: KETEMA JOURNAL The colossal Lego set you observed above is none other than the newly unveiled Gerji Village, developed by the Federal Housing Corporation in collaboration with OVID Construction PLC as its Contractor. This groundbreaking project has transformed mass housing in the capital city through its innovative approach. Nestled within an elevated landscape, Gerji Village comprises 16 blocks, offering a harmonious living environment enriched by thoughtfully integrated social amenities. Its efficient design and strategic placement signify a remarkable milestone in urban construction in Ethiopia, paving the way for a new era of development. Spanning over 2.7 hectares, this modern residential village boasts a total of 500 residential units of consisting a duplex as well as a variety of conventional apartment configurations. The project was initiated following a groundbreaking proposal made by OVID Group’s technical team to the Federal Housing Corporation (FHC) that promised a state-of-the-art residential village comprising 16, 11-storey blocks with unprecedented delivery time of 540 calendar days. The proposal was envisioned as a response to the pressing demand for housing, and to overcome the challenges associated with conventional construction methods. As a result, the decision was made to adopt a design and build delivery system, incorporating new and reliable technologies to surmount the difficulties commonly encountered in the usual construction process. The contractor, OVID Construction displayed commendable execution and leadership culture coupled with a highly incentivized and motivated work force committed to the 24hrs working demands that ultimately led to the completion of the project ahead of delivery time. Now that you have returned to town after your flight, it's an ideal moment to embark on a tour and discover the intricacies of Gerji Village firsthand. As you enter from the northwestern face or its left side entry, you'll immediately notice the imposing presence of the massive 10-story blocks. These blocks align on a long side parallel to your front and perpendicular to your right, creating a visually striking composition that commands attention.

featured 25 Making our way to the entrance of one of the blocks, we discover a welcoming reception area featuring double elevators that provide access to the residential floors above. Additionally, there is a dedicated service elevator, ensuring convenient access for personnel and facilitating the handling of belongings and accessories for individuals who may require assistance during their travels. The layout of these duplex units follows a typical plan, with symmetrical designs encompassing double units per two floors. Upon entering one of these units, you'll discover an office space, a single bedroom, and a spacious living-dining area. The living area opens out to an equally generous balcony, overlooking the elevated garden down at the first-floor level. As we ascend to the top floor, a passage connects three additional bedrooms, offering delightful views of the living area. Lastly, a master bedroom, complete with an en-suite bathroom and a charming mini balcony. IMAGE: KETEMA JOURNAL The lower wing of the development, which consists of the duplex units. These units extend to the southwestern end, offering magnificent views of Bole Airport. As we enter, you'll immediately notice that the ground level is dedicated to vehicular circulation and primarily serves as a parking area, including spaces under the overhead communal garden, which we will visit shortly.

26 Down on the first level, you can access the elevated garden and walkway, connecting the six duplex units. This walkway incorporates communal spaces and is designed with green-building concepts in mind, ensuring a harmonious blend of aesthetics, architecture, and landscape. It offers residents a functional and visually appealing space where they can take evening strolls, socialize with neighbors, relax in cozy seating areas, engage in outdoor games, indulge in gardening activities, or simply enjoy the ambiance, providing a multitude of options for them to spend their time. Having explored the lower wing, let us now move on to the upper wing of the development. Here, you encounter ten apartment blocks surrounding sports courts, communal amenities, and walkable spaces. These ten housing blocks, each comprising a ground floor plus ten stories, are known as the "Apartment Blocks" and offer a total of 440 housing units, including both 3 and 4-bedroom configurations. Within the amenity block, you'll find a wide range of indoor and outdoor facilities designed to enhance residents' quality of life. The indoor facilities encompass a restaurant/cafe, a meeting hall, a beauty salon, a daycare center, a supermarket, a gymnasium, indoor game areas, and office spaces. On the other hand, the outdoor facilities cater to various recreational activities and include tennis and basketball courts, a garden area, a children's playground, cycling and jogging tracks, outdoor seating areas, an amphitheater, and swimming pools for both adults and children. The development upgrades communal living by integrating infrastructure and enhancing existing mass housing solutions. Gerji Village introduces modern features, including over 700 parking spaces, ensuring IMAGE: SAMI FAHMI IMAGE: KETEMA JOURNAL

Additionally, the incorporation of graphics, signage, and wayfinding elements both indoors and outdoors improves navigation and enhances the overall aesthetics. The landscape features carefully leveled hardscape surfaces, lush vegetation rich with domestic edible and medicinal herbs like ‘Tenadam’, ‘Damakesae’, Mint sourced from the onsite seedling section, and thoughtful compound lighting solutions, creating a visually appealing environment while contributing to an increased quality of life for its residents. The Gerji Village development sets itself apart by employing groundbreaking construction techniques that have not only elevated the quality of construction but also significantly reduced the overall project timeline to an impressive 18 months. These techniques were implemented as part OVID Group's strategy to overcome the challenges associated with conventional IMAGE: OVID GROUP

30 construction methods. Ovid Construction played a pioneering role by introducing an innovative "Aluminum Formwork System" for the first time in Ethiopia by partnering with Kumkang Kind Co., one of the largest formwork system manufacturer in the world based in South Korea. The Kumkang Aluminum Formwork enables the seamless pouring of walls, beams, columns, slabs, and staircases, thereby reducing construction time. Additionally, the lightweight and durable nature of the aluminum formwork simplifies transportation, handling, and on-site assembly. Moreover, this system ensures exceptional dimensional accuracy, resulting in precise and uniform concrete structures. Furthermore, the reusable nature of Kumkang aluminum formwork minimizes waste generation and promotes sustainability within construction projects. Collectively, these advantages deliver cost savings, enhanced productivity, and superior construction quality throughout the entire process. Such construction techniques offer developers and contractors the opportunity to expedite and elevate the quality of future building projects in the city and country. IMAGE: KETEMA JOURNAL

featured 31 In conclusion, the Gerji Village development represents a remarkable integration of communal living, sustainable design, and innovative construction practices. With its thoughtfully designed communal spaces, green developments, and efficient construction techniques, it has upgraded the standard of living for residents while setting a new benchmark for architectural excellence. The incorporation of communal amenities fosters a sense of community, while the implementation of sustainable features promotes a healthier and more eco-friendly environment. From reduced construction time to enhanced energy efficiency, Gerji Village stands as a testament to the transformative power of innovative architecture, construction, and the pursuit of a better quality of life for its residents. As our tour comes to an end, it's time to head to the airport to ensure you don't miss your next flight. Taking one final glance through the plane's side windows, you can now truly appreciate the intricate details and tremendous efforts that have gone into crafting this captivating and vibrant Lego set. 36 I would like to dedicate this exhibition to the late Mr. Wubshet Workalemahu (the pioneer and erudite Ethiopian advertiser), to the proud Ethiopians of the past and the creative of the present and future. This is the third exhibition on Ethiopian brands and visual communication. The first exhibition in 2021 by the name Branding and Communication in Ethiopia for over 100 years was open to the public from 14 January - 15 March. Visitors could witness Ethiopia’s proficiency and awareness in the field of branding and visual communication, using strong symbols as early as 1889 (that is during the reign of Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu Betul), when branding and visual communication was not perceived to be as essential as it is today in our global economy. The second exhibition in 2022, 28 April - 29 June. So far, at this same place, including this third exhibition, I have presented eighty-four Ethiopian iconic brands and many more to come. Symbols have always been used to build an emotional and psychological relationship between the message sender and receiver, they are vital tools to establish trust and promise. They say something, they stand for something, they touch and they have history. A reliable sign for a certain advantage; it could be faith, good deed, exercising power, politics, sports, unity, belonging, and today for selling all kinds of merchandise. When you see the Ambo symbol, you suddenly feel thirsty, and when you see The Red Cross symbol you feel a sense of safety and calmness. Usually, the brands with the bigger reach are better known commercially and more expensive. Exhibition by Efrem Beyene in cooperation with Addis Ababa Hilton. 14 Sep - 15 Nov 2023. featured 37 Main sponsors My interest in older and iconic Ethiopian brands started a few years ago by discovering Addis Ababa Hilton’s logotype designed fifty-four years ago in connection with the hotel’s opening in 1969. I was fascinated by how the beautiful Amharic letters were arranged geometrically in a humble and sublime manner. A respectful gesture by the designer and the management to the old nation and her people with their own distinct alphabet. That is building trust, which I mentioned earlier. And I have to admit that, I have a solid emotional bond with the hotel due to its majestic and fascinating architecture inspired by the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. I kept on looking for more symbols; refreshing memories from my youth, remnants of signs during my visits to Addis, books, and the internet for more. It is with great pleasure to be able to share with you what more I have discovered for this third exhibition. It is indeed fascinating that the leaders of the country during that time, organizations and companies understood the importance of communicating with powerful symbols, employing Amharic letters, and sometimes combined with European characters. The symbols and visual communication you are witnessing in this exhibition are executed skillfully with simplicity, sophistication, and honesty. Still fresh and cutting-edge to this day! My name is Efrem Beyene. I grew up and studied in Dessie, a small town in the north-central part of Ethiopia and the former capital city of Wollo Region. I was sent to Sweden in 1989 (thirty-four years ago) by the Embassy of Sweden in Addis Ababa to study art. Before I left for Sweden I used to exhibit my paintings at Göthe Institut and Alliance Ethio-Française in Addis Ababa. Today I work as a consultant in Stockholm in the field of Branding and Communication. I am very grateful for everything Ethiopia, my hometown Dessie and my school Woizero Sehin School in Dessie have taught me to meet the challenges in a far and different country with dignity. When you know where you come from, it is much easier to navigate where you are going. For the third time, I would also like to use this opportunity to thank Mr. Claus Steiner, General Manager of Addis Ababa Hilton, for his genuine interest in this matter and his unconditional support to realize this third exhibition. Please kindly observe that the products displayed here are not for sale. And taking images of the symbols and reproducing them for commercial purposes will lead to legal consequences. Thank you for visiting. Keep Ethiopia plastic-free. Use textile or paper bags!

38 Before home interiors in Ethiopia were influenced by trends from the US, Europe and Dubai, Ethiopian homes in the capital and bigger towns used to be modest and calm with pieces of furniture and items arranged neatly and symmetrically. The Dantel thrown thoughtfully on a number of livingroom inventories was a last touch of the decoration. The theme is mostly the three colours of the old nation or flowers. Tej is a honey wine, like mead, that is brewed and consumed in Ethiopia. It has an alcohol content generally ranging from 7 to 11%. It is often home processed and consists of three main ingredients; honey, water and a medicinal shrub called Rhamnus prinoides (Gesho in Amharic). It is consumed with a bottle called Berele that comes in two versions, in a long and short neck. The bottles are produced just for the purpose of drinking tej. The Bereles produced for the Imperial banquets used to be branded with the Imperial monogram. During the Imperial times those serving pots for stews and trays for serving the national dish, Injera, were very pupular. They were made out of enamel and the design theme was the three colours of the national flag, Imperial monograms and floral patterns. The pots were cleverly marked for homes of Christian and Muslim families respectively. Here the red one belongs to a Muslim household and the grey to a Christian. DANTEL, THE FAMOUS HOME DECORATION PIECE THE FAMOUS STEW SERVING POTS TEJ CAR PLATE OF EMPEROR MENELIK II Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia is the first to own a car in the whole continent of Africa. He was very interested in modernization and new technology, among others: Commissioning the Swedish Ericsson to introduce the telephone system, post, newspaper, train connection between Addis Ababa and Djibouti, banking printing press, piped water, electricity, modern hospital and school, gramophone, telescopes etc. Above all he managed to fend off colonial power successfully in the process! Talking about originality and uniqueness! See how the architects of the time conceived and designed the pool exactly like the cross-shaped roof of the rock-hewn St. George church in Lalibela. The cross shape is carefully repeated and used as door handles in the rooms. THE UNIQUE SWIMMING POOL. Walias Band was formed in the early 1970s in Addis Ababa. At the height of their creativity, they were the house band for Addis Ababa Hilton for over ten years. Due to the band’s presence, business was very good for Addis Ababa Hilton as well. The band leader Hailu Mergia and The Walias jammed with Manu Dibango, Alice Coltrane and countless others who passed through the hotel. The crowd was a who’s-who of diplomats and socialites. ADDIS ABABA HILTON, WALIAS BAND.

featured 39 During the Imperial times, Hilton international took on a new project to repeat its architectural success in Addis Ababa based on the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. The sites chosen for the project were Lalibela, Bahir Dar, Gondar and Axum. The logo was inspired from a ceiling painting at St. Mary church in Lalibela. The one in Lalibela, after the ownership by Ghion Hotels, is owned by a private company today. HOTEL ROHA LALIBELA Addis Ababa Star mattress cover has a dominating position due to its unique and easy-to-remember pattern and affordable price. You see it transported in stacks all over Addis Ababa ready to be used for a good night’s sleep! ADDIS ABABA STAR, THE FAMOUS MATTRESS COVER This colourful Ethiopian event is celebrated between 16 and 23 August every year. The name of the festivity has four names based on where it is celebrated but it serves the same purpose. According to tradition girls gather who are unmarried (virgin), beautify dressed and ashenda grass (lily-torch) behind their backs to commemorate the leaves dropped by Christians to Virgin Mary, during her flight to Egypt. ASHENDA/ASHENDYE/SOLEL/SHADEY During the Imperial times of Ethiopia, five bus companies were trafficking the main highway between Addis Ababa and Asmara via Dessie and Mekelle. Wollo Feres, Mamo Kacha, Setaio, Haji Abdu, and Agonafer. They were majestic, rolling gracefully among the beautiful mountainous landscape. Their arrival to different smaller and bigger towns was announced by a sound identity, meaning music played on the megaphone mounted on the front side of the buses. Ambo Mineral Water is one of the strongest brands in Ethiopia. A brand of naturally-carbonated bottled mineral water, sourced from the springs in Ambo Senkele, near the town of Ambo in central Ethiopia. It is a popular drink in Ethiopia, and has been described as the ”oldest modern mineral water”. It has been bottled since 1930. When you see the bottle and the symbol you suddenly feel thirsty! So refreshing and goes very well with all kinds of cuisines. The brand is so exceptional that it does not need so much explanation. The shirt is designed by me and tailored by one of Stockholm’s best tailor Mr. Mohamad Dalal. AMBO MINERAL WATER ENKUTATASH, ETHIOPIAN NEW YEAR WOLLO FERES BUS My absolute favorite time of the year! From September to November, much of the Ethiopian plateau and many river valleys, hills, and mountain slopes are covered by yellow flowers, (Bidens macroptera) called Adey Ababa in Amharic. In some locations, these flowers grow in masses so dense that they resemble cultivated fields. The yellow flowers are a symbol of peace, hope, and love. And the meat tastes so good during this time including October.

40 I will be very brief with my caption as the fine Ethiopian gentleman Abebe Bikila is widely known all over the world even to this day. But when talking about branding and the old nation he has a very special place in history as he has sacrificed and accomplished a lot for his beloved country’s reputation. He has inspired and still is, a generation of brilliant athletes holding the nation’s brand high and proud. Shambel Abebe Bikila was an Ethiopian marathon runner who was a back-to-back Olympic marathon champion. He is the first Ethiopian Olympic gold medalist, winning his and Africa’s first gold medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome while running barefoot. At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, he won his second gold medal. In turn, he became the first athlete to successfully defend an Olympic marathon title. In both victories, he ran in world record time. Agip used to be a famous gas station all over the country. The company had a dominating position following the highway from Addis Ababa to Asmara. Due to its brilliant visual identity, which consists of an imaginary six-legged animal, bright yellow colour contrasted by black and red, it is the first image that appear on your mind may you need a top-up or a refill. Even in a very small town like Kobbo, situated between Woldiya and Alamata, Agip had state of the art gas station using a minimum space; the pumping machines, manager’s office, shop for different lubricants and signage were symmetrically and beautifully arranged. Personnel dressed sharply in an overall decorated with the brand. At night the Agip station gave Kobbo town a mystic atmosphere due to the yellow lights which came from the signage, the small office and shop. AGIP THE LEGEND OF ABEBE BIKILA BRANDED IMPERIAL DRINKING CUP An indigo-blue drinking cup made out of enamel for major imperial banquets. The symbol and initials refer to the birth name of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I. ተ (T) ተፈሪ (Teferi) መ (M) መኮንን (Mekonnen). It is unlike other drinking utensils due to its pronounced length, dimension and indigo-blue colour (white inside). That makes it unique and original. It is on display at the refurbished Grand Palace in Addis Ababa. The Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development was officially inaugurated on March 6, 2010. It is the latest chapter of a long and vivid history of the school. Before becoming EiABC, the school was part of the Faculty of Technology of Addis Ababa University. And before that, it was known as the Ethio-Swedish Institute, or in short: the Building College. This institution was founded in 1954 through a bilateral agreement between the Ethiopian and Swedish Governments. The railway connection between Djibouti port and Addis Ababa was built by the Imperial Railway Company of Ethiopia, founded in 1894, and opened in 1917. France owned the Djibouti part of the line but transferred this ownership to the Djiboutian Government after their independence in 1977. Later, ownership of the entire railway went to the Ethio-Djibouti Railways company. EIABC DIRE DAWA TRAIN STATION A consultant briefed Emperor Menelk II about Eucalyptus tree from Australia. The Emperor (always open and keen for new ideas) inrigued by the advice gave a green light to import it to Ethiopia. For me the scent of Eucalyptus tree makes me home-sick missing my hometown Dessie where the tree is the base of livelihood: building houses, a fence, firewood, medicin and makeshift carpet for weddings and mournings. I grew up near St. Mary church of Dessie with my grandmother and sitting by the steps of the church and taking in the scent and the sound from the eucalyptus trees stirred by the wind used to be just heavenly! EUCALYPTUS TREE

featured 41 Dire Dawa textile factory was established in 1939. The factory was one of the main employers for the dwellers of the city. The factory is named after ”Cottoni” in everyday conversations among the dwellers. At one time Fuji, a Japanese firm, was involved in the operation. One of the Japanese personnel who was interested in taking pictures became a good friend to a young and beautiful Ethiopian female working at the factory. Despite a language barrier, they maintained their friendship and he took a lot of pictures of the young beauty in the process. And one of the pictures in a vector form you see here became the company’s famous Trade Mark! Created by Zalman Enav and Michael Tedros Architects, the building was designed to hold all of the Ministry’s administrative and public facilities. The offices are grouped around an inner court covered with translucent sheets. The corridors function as galleries and passageways. The structure of the building is shaped like the “Ethiopian Star” (Star of Solomon - the national Ethiopian symbol), and based on an arrangement of columns that jointly form trusses with the floor slabs acting as tie beams. The elevations of the building integrate concrete “Ethiopian Star” (symbol on white) columns which create a unique pattern. Ketema is a bi-monthly building and construction journal in Ethiopia focusing on the built environment and professionals involved with a mission of promoting contemporary architecture and its practitioners through publication. Founded by professionals who were convinced that the profession and industry deserved better; Ketema aspires to create one of the most compelling architectural publications in Ethiopia and beyond. Amha Records was an Ethiopian record label established by the fine gentleman Amha Eshèté (image above) in 1969. The label released 103 7” singles and 10 albums between 1969 and 1975. Prominent Ethiopian artists who are featured on the label include Mulatu Astatke, Mahmoud Ahmed, Tilahun Gessesse, Hailu Mergia and Alemayehu Eshete among others. The Amha Records label released iconic recordings of Ethiojazz and Ethiopop rooted in traditional music. These releases captured the golden era of Ethiopian music. Amha recordings were licensed to the French world music label Buda Musique and received worldwide distribution and critical acclaim as part of the successful Ethiopiques series. The highly influential Ethiopian music producer died on April 30, 2021. DIREDAWA BEAUTY MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS KETEMA JOURNAL AMHA RECORDS THE BAJAJ Before the Bajaj came to small towns in Ethiopia and the outskirts of Addis Ababa the alternative used to be a gig or walking. Today Bajajs are part of the picture of each small town, as the blue and white Ladas and the Anbessa buses are part of Addis Ababa’s cityscape. The size and shape of Bajajs with all the messages pasted on the shade made out of plastic is the main identity of those half-motorcycle and half-vehicle means of transport. The famous Ethiopian poet Bewuketu Seyoum described the construction of the Bajaj jokingly stating that they are made out of maximum textile and minimum metal. Skating in Ethiopia is a new phenomenon, formed in 2013 at the Sarbet parking lot in Addis Ababa. Ethiopia Skate work to empower youth in Ethiopia by providing access to skateboard materials and by creating skating spots. The community consists of over 150 skateboarders in Ethiopia’s capital and other small towns across the country, with much more eager to join. More recently, in November 2017 Ethiopia SKate built Ethiopia’s second free-of-charge community skatepark, Hawassa Skatepark. Ethiopia Skate is a registered non-profit in the US thus allowing them to accept tax-deductible donations to further fund their efforts in Ethiopia.
