The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Well, it was an eventful summer for the PGA Tour. I think
the title of the famous Clint Eastwood spaghetti western
best sums it up. Cue up the music and feel free to whistle
the theme song as you read.
Let’s start with the GOOD. I think there are not enough
superlatives to describe Billy Hurley III’s win at the
Quicken Loans National at Congressional. The United
States Naval Academy graduate; Leesburg, VA, native;
and Annapolis, MD, resident was known already as a
hero having served our country in the Persian Gulf.
While there he guided a 10,000-ton destroyer through the Suez Canal. So, working
his way around the tree-lined fairways at the Blue Course must have been a walk
in the park. Add the personal tragedies that the Hurley family went through in 2015
to make this, as CBS analyst Peter Kostis called it, “the story of the year on the PGA
Tour.” Billy, we salute you!
And now we come to the BAD. Just weeks before
they were supposed to host a very popular stop
on the PGA Tour, The Greenbrier Resort in White
Sulphur Springs unfortunately became part of
the terrible, historic flood that hit that part of
West Virginia. The Old White TPC course and
surrounding grounds were so severely damaged
that the PGA was forced to cancel the event that
many charities in the area always count on for major fundraising. It will take some
time for that region to rebound, but we have little doubt the hierarchy at Greenbrier
will have that facility back to its beautiful and original self in 2017.
And, for lack of argument, we call what could have
happened at the U.S. Open UGLY! I really love the USGA
and what it does for the growth of golf on a yearly basis,
but when it comes to running an event, perhaps they
should leave it to the tours. The near fiasco at Oakmont
Country Club with eventual champion Dustin Johnson
could have sent golf back to the stone ages. We all know
that rules are part of the game, but if you are trying to
attract new players to the game, the last thing you need
to do is have a ball moving a fraction of an inch decide
your national championship. Johnson said he didn’t
move the ball. Case closed. This is a game of honor. Kudos to the other players for
standing by DJ.
Each and every season of the PGA Tour has its moments, but none quite as
memorable as those during the summer of 2016. We can only hope that next year
we see more GOODS, less BADS, and definitely no UGLIES!

Pleasant Valley Golf Club ~ Northern Virginia Bliss

Nick Ciattei

pleas•ant- (Adj.) Giving a sense of happy satisfaction or enjoyment

Anyone who lives in the self-

proclaimed “DMV” (District of

Columbia, Maryland, Virginia)

sometimes finds the need to get in

the car and drive up to an hour or

more for relief from the hustle and

bustle. You seldom find a peaceful

golf sanctuary tucked away in the Hole 5 Par 5

middle of one of the busiest places on

the planet. I can probably count on

my fingers the Northern Virginia golf courses that are totally void of any

housing or building encroachments, but Pleasant Valley Golf Club, located

near Dulles Airport in Chantilly, Virginia, numbers among those in this

very rare category.

Tom Clark of Ault, Clark and

Associates accomplished a masterful

design job here incorporating the

natural landscape that features

rolling hills, hardwoods, and native

grass meadows. The course was

received extremely well after it

opened in 1998 and remains one

Hole 9 Par 4 of the favorite plays in the region

constantly receiving high grades

from Golf Digest and other local media outlets as well. The park setting at
times makes me scratch my head as I play Pleasant Valley. I just find it hard

to imagine that Iʼm strolling through golf course paradise in Fairfax County,

one of the most active counties in the nation. The layout is so well buffered

from the property lines that you would have to hit it sideways a couple

times to find civilization! The par 72 plays just over 6900 yards from the

tips, and three other sets of tees make it playable for all comers. A quick

check of the scorecard and you will notice great diversity in the lengths

of holes. Architect Clark was able to create a variety of shot-making

opportunities within his design.

The front nine opens with two medium length par 4s that, if played
correctly, can get your round off to a genial start. Avoid the large bunker

down the left side dogleg bend

of the second hole. Holes three

through five at Pleasant Valley

probably represent the strongest

stretch of holes on the entire course.

The par 5 thirdʼs tee shot that plays

through a hallway of trees, and

Hole 11 Par 3 at nearly 600 yards requires three
proper shots to achieve success.

Nothing quite compares following

the toughest par 5 with the hardest par 3, but they did it here. The fourth

measures 222 from the back tees and plays from an elevated tee to an

elevated green. Hole five is this writers’ favorite on the outward nine with

its very clever design with lots of options. Another par 5, it offers a bit of

risk-reward played across a rolling hill with a fairway in two by a large

tree. After the par 4 sixth, you come to the most memorable hole on the

front side. The par 3 seventh plays entirely over water to a deep, narrow

green. A couple of par 4s play back to the clubhouse, with number nine

providing an excellent birdie prospect.

The back nine at Pleasant Valley starts with a reachable par 5 where you
must avoid the water to the right of the putting surface. The par 3 eleventh
features a most notable trait in its long and slender green. Hole twelve
kicks off a pair of monster par 4s that play very fairly from the white tees
on the inward side. At 479 yards, I had difficulty reaching the fairway.
Always respect par here! The green on the par 5 thirteenth, another solid
hole, is tucked away among trees. Plan accordingly for the best angle
of attack, which lies up the right side of the fairway. After a final par 3,
your round wraps up with four consecutive par 4s that are as different
as night and day. The lengthy fifteenth has no bunkers, and the second

shot plays uphill to an undersized

green surrounded by mounds. Who

doesn’t like a drivable, short par 4?

Find Pleasant Valley’s version on

the sixteenth, a great hole where

water to the right and a trio of

bunkers protect the green, which

Hole 17 Par 4 may perplex your decision making
from the tee. Seventeen features a

unique split fairway with a large

bunker in the middle handling the duties in place of a directional flag.

Eighteen plays back to the clubhouse with a large water feature to the

right that runs the entire length of the fairway right up to the green. Your

approach plays slightly uphill, so you may want to consider carrying an

extra club. This awesome finishing hole encompasses all the superb, joyful

qualities Pleasant Valley offers.

In 2016 Pleasant Valley added an
outdoor pavilion that augments their
capacity for hosting charity events
and corporate outings. It makes for
an ideal place to hold an after round
meal or prize ceremony presentation.
Pleasant Valley is owned and
managed by Wingfield Golf
Properties out of Greenville, South
Carolina, and has a sister course
located just over the county line.
Having a terrific Dan Maples' design, South Riding Golf Club in Loudoun
County resides in the very successful South Riding residential community.
Wingfield also manages four other courses in Virginia. A links-style course,
Bristow Manor is graced by a 19th century Manor House and stretches
across Prince William County's countryside. A wonderful, new Rees Jones
masterpiece, The Club at Viniterra in New Kent has already achieved top
ten status in the state, and the two Bowling Green Country Club courses
near Front Royal have been legendary golf staples in the Shenandoah
Valley for the past 30 years. All of these courses are included with an
Associate Member Club membership, which grants tons of privileges. It’s
a terrific bargain if you like to play some of the best golf courses in the
Commonwealth.

When you hear the words Northern Virginia, you normally think of a busy,
hectic pace. Well, if you need to experience some golf bliss, Pleasant Valley
Golf Club could become your go to place.

Pittsburgh, PA ~ Home of the Black and Gold

Wes Bolyard

The city of Pittsburgh has a long and
interesting history. Few people associate
the Lewis and Clark expedition with
Pittsburgh where Meriwether Lewis
actually started this long journey at
the Ohio River where the Allegheny
and the Monongahela rivers merge.
After having a keelboat built, he started
down the Ohio River (all 981 miles of
it) on August 31, 1803, and was joined
by William Clark in mid-October at
Louisville, Kentucky. They continued the journey to the Mississippi River, and then
floated north to the Missouri River and points west. Where the Allegheny and the
Monongahela come together was a very strategic location during the middle 1700s
where two forts were built to defend the area: Fort Duquesne and Fort Pitt. This
location was called the Golden Triangle and now serves as Pittsburgh’s central
business district, and the popular Point State Park is located there.
Pittsburgh comprises several distinct areas: Mount Washington, Shadyside, The
Strip District (not really what you are thinking) and many others. In the early 19th
century, the Strip District was home to many mills and factories. With the demise of
the steel industry, the area has been reclaimed and developed into a historic market
district with many ethnic food purveyors, art studios, antique dealers, unique
boutiques, and other businesses. Because of the city’s location with the two rivers
dissecting it and the proximity of the foothills of the Allegheny Plateau, Pittsburgh
has a hilly terrain. This has caused the city to build 445 bridges to help traffic flow
better.
Speaking of hills, the Duquesne Incline allows
you to take a step back in time on a century old
cable car and see the best views of downtown
Pittsburgh while riding one of the few
remaining inclines in the country. It opened
on May 20, 1877, and remains a very integral
part of the transportation system, climbing 400
feet to the Mt. Washington area. Seniors 65
and older ride free! And after you have ridden
the incline to the top, you wonʼt find a better
chance to visit the Monterey Bay Fish Grotto.
You also will not get better panoramas of the
city and the joining of the rivers, plus enjoy
outstanding food.
Pittsburgh has more than 300 downtown
restaurants, a great variety of hotel

8 GOLFGUIDEINC.COM

accommodations, seven professional sports teams, performing arts, breweries,
wineries and distilleries, and exciting museums to visit. Adjacent to the Point State
Park and the beginning of the downtown area find the Wyndham Grand, which
offers the great landscapes of the joining of the two rivers that make up the Ohio.
Offering 712 very comfortable guest rooms and suites and good dining, this location
serves as a very convenient spot to begin exploring of the rest of Pittsburgh.
Market Square is located about two blocks from the Wyndham and offers a wide
variety of dining options including the truly unique The Church Brew Works. The
original historic church built in the early 1900s served the community for years,
but with declining membership, closed in 1993. A rebirth of the ornate building
was completed in 1996 with the opening of Brew Works where beautiful stained
glass windows look down on you. This 8,000 square foot restaurant offers excellent
dining and a large variety of handcrafted beers with room to host “a multitude”
of guests. Another specialty of Pittsburgh in the Strip District, Pamela’s Diner,
specializes in crêpe-style pancakes, omelets, and Lyonnaise potatoes.
Things to do in Pittsburgh include
visiting the Senator John Heinz History
Center. Both adults and children will find
interesting this educational institution
with six floors of exhibits, spanning more
than 250 years of Western Pennsylvania
history. If you have never been to a
baseball park either for a game or just a
tour, schedule a visit to the PNC Park,
where the Pittsburgh Pirates play. The
Pirates started playing baseball in 1887
and won the World Series in 1909,
1925, 1960, 1971, and 1979. They also have a special museum dedicated to one of
their heroes, Roberto Clemente. The Pirates, as well as all the other professional
championship teams in Pittsburgh, wear the colors of Black and Gold.

Quicksilver With quite a few golf courses
around the Pittsburgh area,
Quicksilver Golf Club proves to be
one of the exciting and fun ones.
Blessed with rolling terrain, a few
blind shots, quick and slightly
undulating greens, a few trees, and a
set of baby “church pew bunkers” at
the 18th hole, this layout makes for
a really enjoyable round (or more
than one round) of golf. The club is
located about 30 minutes southwest
of Pittsburgh.

Another golf course in the area,
Oakmont Country Club, although
not open to the public, hosted the
2016 U.S. Open won by Dustin
Johnson. When it was featured
on television, we all got a glimpse
of what a beautiful place it is.
Initially, Oakmont, opened in
1903, was designed as a links-like
course spread out over 191 acres.
The design includes 210 bunkers
(including the church pews between
holes 3 and 4 and adjacent to 15) Oakmont

and 13 holes with ditches running beside the fairways that were called “Evil” by
Ken Brown (a former European Tour golfer, who now works as a golf broadcaster).
Bob Ford, the longtime head professional, talked about how the course changed
over the years. In the early 60s, they started planting trees and it became a tree
lined course like all the others around it. Then the trees started interfering with the
ergonomics of the course. In the early 80s, a couple of the members started taking
out some of the trees and had removed 1,000 of them before they got caught. This
became a problem because quite a few of the members were ones who had planted
them. But most of the members saw the light and eventually a total of 15,000 trees
were removed. Thus, the course got back to its original design and a beautiful piece
of property was revealed.

Having never been to Pittsburgh
before, I found it to be a really
interesting place to visit with an
abundance of opportunities to have
fun. Before you head to Pittsburgh,
request the visitor’s guide so you can
plan your adventure.

Designed by architect J. Michael Poellot and two-time
U.S. Open Champion Ernie Els, Whiskey Creek is as big
and bold as the land itself. Bordered by a high ridge of
hardwoods and a winding, free-flowing creek, the course
features wetlands, rock outcroppings, stone walls, streams,
and dramatic views of the Catoctin Mountains. Like most of
the tested and true championship courses, Whiskey Creek
is an honest golf course with its challenges and hazards
in plain sight. The holes at Whiskey Creek are designed to
test a player’s shotmaking ability, never more evident than
the par 5 closer, with ruins of an old farmhouse splitting the
fairway with great risk-reward opportunities. Come see the
drama that awaits just minutes off I-270, Exit 26, on Route
80 in Urbana, Maryland.

Feature Story

Pendleton Golf Club ~ Aye, She’s a Bonnie Lass

Nick Ciattei

Most true golf aficionados know that the game
of golf originated in Scotland back in the 15th
century. Golf “across the pond” definitely has a
distinctive feel. Few places in the Mid-Atlantic
golf scene give you that similar ambience.
Pendleton Golf Club in Ladysmith, VA, certainly
fits the bill. At Pendleton you can play golf in
Scotland without the cost of the airfare. The
Hole 6 Par 4 signature “Scottish” mounding and native

grasses prevail throughout the Thomas Walker design that offers equal parts
challenge and fun.

Walker makes wonderful use of the land’s contours and uses multiple tees to make
the course playable for all. The back tees measure just under 7100 yards and carry
a formidable 141 slope rating, while the forward markers lay across just over 4500
yards. Pendleton Golf Club spreads out over an immense piece of land that includes
a golf community that has little impact on the course, which is always good. With
no parallel fairways, each hole sits alone. This well-conditioned golf course has
Bermuda grass fairways and roughs while the greens are bentgrass.

The front nine opens with an impressive par 5. A drive down the left side gives
the best play. If you decide to lay-up, avoid the two bunkers on the right. The
memorable, undulating putting surface on the par 4 second makes this hole
noteworthy. This dogleg right features an approach shot over wetlands to a 50-
yard wide green with three distinct levels. Anything not on right stage could lead
to a three-putt. The first of the par 3s, the beautiful third over water, plays about
150 yards. A well-placed lofted iron gets you on the green safely. Walker’s use of
extensive mounding is never more evident than on the par 4 fourth, where four
greenside pot bunkers attract any misses short right. On the fifth, the second par
5 on Pendleton’s front side, a long drive over a waste area sets up a chance to
get home in two. The par 4 sixth, a terrific gentle dogleg left, features another of
the layout’s wow-effect greens with its 50-yard deep green and upper and lower
plateaus. Try to score well on the par 3 seventh because both closing holes will
prove testy. The one-of-a-kind, dogleg right par 4 eighth features old house ruins
and a 19th century gravesite. Take par here as a good score and on the long uphill
par 4 ninth.

The back nine at Pendleton opens with two tough Hole 13 Par 5
par 4s. The tenth plays uphill 462 yards from the
tips with a dogleg left. The 453-yard eleventh has
love grass covered hillocks up the left side that
can literally swallow a ball. Par always looks
good on the scorecard, especially on the par 3
twelfth, which measures 220 from the tips. Two
fashionable holes, the par 5s on this side, call for

34 GOLFGUIDEINC.COM

creative shot making. Both offer good scoring opportunities with thirteen reachable
if you can trim the corner of the dogleg. A large tree that actually oversees another
gravesite splits the fifteenthʼs fairway. Let’s not forget the par 4 fourteenth, a dogleg
right with water impeding your second shot to the green. Don’t be short on sixteen,
a serene par 3 over wetlands. The back nine wraps up with two par 4s, the latter a
sharp dogleg right where the second shot plays uphill.

You may wonder how they chose the name of the
course. Edmund Pendleton, Caroline County’s
most famous historical figure, participated
as a political leader in the late 1700s and also
became well-known for his involvement in
creating Virginia’s independence. Now in its
tenth year, Pendleton Golf Club prides itself for
its outstanding customer service and friendly
Hole 15 Par 5

atmosphere. One of the best practice ranges in
the state with a one-acre grass tee and laser measured target flags calls Pendleton
home. Since many of us only dream of going to Scotland, why not take a chance
to go there free? Pendleton is giving away a trip for two to Scotland. Go to their
website to find out more and to register. Now, that would be nice. In the meantime,
enjoy the next best thing! Pendleton Golf Club lies 1.5 miles off I-95 on Route 1
conveniently located midway between Richmond and Fredericksburg, VA.

The Vista Links Golf Club ~ Muy Buena

Nick Ciattei

The proverb, “beauty is in the eye of the
beholder” dates back to the third century
BC. To describe The Vista Links Golf Course
in Buena Vista, Virginia, we must talk about
beholding beauty. Most observers would
totally agree that Vista Links can claim
being one of the most beautiful golf courses
you’ll find in the region. You’ll witness 18
holes of Shenandoah Valley splendor that is
Hole 4 Par 4

equally challenging and very enjoyable to
play. Noted Architect Rick Jacobson manipulated the land well here bringing into
play the incredible variations in the rolling land as well as rock outcroppings and
then added his own splashy sand trap designs. The designer did a fine job leaving
the playing surface as unspoiled and as natural as possible. But for this golfer, the
heavenly Blue Ridge Mountain backdrops really steal the show.

The Vista Links opened in 2004 as part
of Glen Maury Park, 600-acres of Buena
Vista city-run land just off Interstate 81
between Harrisonburg and Roanoke.
The par 72 layout uses five sets of tees
ranging from just under 5000 to nearly
6900 yards that are roomy enough to
accommodate players of all skill levels.
The front nine opens with a slightly
uphill par 4 where an extra club makes
Hole 11 Par 4

perfect sense on your approach to a
receptive green. The par 5 second has most of the previously mentioned Vista Links
traits all rolled up into one hole. It takes three well-negotiated shots to get on the
dance floor. An outstanding set of 3 pars starts with the third. This pleasing golf
hole affords little room for error, so try not to spray your tee shot. The fourth, one
of my favorite holes on this side, named “The Old Barn” on the scorecard, displays
vintage Virginia Commonwealth countryside. One of the shortest of the par 4s is
routed across a ravine to a green framed by an ancient cowshed in the background
showing off a muy buena vista! The par 3 fifth has one of the more undulating
greens, so hitting it rewards you in your quest for a good score. The par 5 sixth
plays uphill all the way and much longer, so don’t be fooled by the yardage. Three
par 4s, one just as picturesque as the other, round out the outward side. Seven
and eight play in opposite directions as well as contours. The first runs downhill
and the next one reaches back uphill. They present good scoring events when
played properly. The ninth, at 467 yards from the tips, calls for a “grip it and rip it”
mentality from the tee box with its ample fairway.

The back nine at The Vista Links starts with a par 4 that plays in the opposite
direction of the ninth hole. The eleventh hole, another petite par 4, will overwhelm

38 GOLFGUIDEINC.COM

your senses with its stunning mountain
background. The Vista Links changes things
up noticeably on holes twelve through
fourteen that play through the course’s
only real wooded area. A par 5, 3, and 4
in sequence all have their own challenges.
Keep it up the left side on twelve for the
best results. Concentrate on the green some
Hole 15 Par 4 60 feet below the tee box on thirteen, and

wisely choose a fairway wood off the tee
on the slender fourteenth. Tagged “Chalk Mine Run,” the majestic par 4 fifteenth
at Vista Links begins a fine stretch of holes back to the clubhouse. The tee shot
requires accuracy to produce an acceptable line at the green guarded by beautiful
Sycamore trees on both sides. Sixteen, the last of the par 5s and a realistic birdie
or possibly an eagle hole, plays downhill to a large pond guarding the left side of
the fairway. Trust me and take par on the uphill par 3 seventeenth. That’s always
a good score that will likely earn you some coin. The par 4 eighteenth provides
everything you want in a closing hole to finish your round strong.

Pure golf with minimal distractions except for nature itself dominates here. You
may almost experience sensory overload. So enjoy, and take it all in. Very few
courses can boast having scenic views like those at The Vista Links.

Out of the Bag

A Northern Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, golf course
has new ownership in place. Sly Fox Golf Club, formerly
Jackson’s Chase is now owned by Louis Carrozza and
Brian Keller, both businessmen from Northern Virginia.
Carrozza told The Golf Guide that over the next few
months, golfers can expect to see several changes at the
course including general improvements to the course
and clubhouse conditions. He also said that the two plan to widen the fairways,
renovate and return all sand traps, and add additional landscaping. To embrace
the history of the property, which is also part of their goals, they plan to create
a memorial to recognize the land’s saga. In keeping with the times, high speed
internet will be available in their upgraded bar and grill. Players can look for
a tiered membership plan for 2017 in an effort to better fit all golfers’ needs.
Carrozza and Keller have a focused plan, and in an era of many golf courses going
by the wayside, we are happy to see fresh, excited new blood being pumped into the
golf business.

On Monday, October 18th, the 8th Annual National Golf Course Owners
Association Mid-Atlantic (NGCOA-MA) Annual Meeting & Golf Outing will be
held at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian, VA. Four awards will be presented
at the meeting – the IBS Public Course Award, the IBS Private Course Award,
the Jacobsen Environmental Stewardship Award, and the Mid-Atlantic Golf
Leader Award. The event will be open to all golf industry professionals and
club representatives. This includes golf course owners/operators (whether or not
NGCOA-MA members at present) and their guests, general managers and/or Club
Managers Association of America members, MAPGA professionals, Virginia
Golf Course Superintendents members, and NGCOA-MA partners. Register at

Six legends of Virginia golf have been inducted into
the Inaugural Class of the Virginia Golf Hall of Fame.
Vinny Giles, Chandler Harper, Clyde Luther, Sam Snead,
Curtis Strange, and Lanny Wadkins were honored at the
ceremony recently held at The Homestead Omni Resort.
The event coincided with the launch of the virtual Virginia Golf Hall of Fame,
which can be found online at virginiagolfhalloffame.com. The website features
rooms and exhibits on all six inductees, along with news and a nomination form
for potential future Hall of Fame members. Snead, Strange, and Wadkins are
members of the World Golf Hall of Fame. They’re also members of the Virginia
Sports Hall of Fame, as are Giles and Harper. Harper and Giles are members
of the Middle Atlantic PGA Hall of Fame, and Harper holds a spot in the PGA
of America Hall of Fame. Luther is a nationally known expert on the Rules of
Golf. Snead, Strange, Wadkins, and Harper all won major championships during
their illustrious careers, and all four have represented their country in Ryder Cup
matches. Giles is renowned as one of the greatest amateurs to have ever played
the game, and he’s the only man in history to have won the U.S. Amateur, British
Amateur, and U.S. Senior Amateur championships. Among the awards Luther

annually by the USGA to recognize meritorious service to the game.

Keswick Hall and Golf Club, the
acclaimed 600-acre luxury resort
set in Virginia’s scenic hunt country,
has named Will Jones as their new
general manager. Jones brings more
than 11 years of experience in the
hospitality industry. During his last
gig at The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island
Golf Resort in South Carolina he held
several positions before becoming
director of rooms. He worked previously at Beaver Run Resort in Breckenridge,
Colorado, where he served as the concierge. Keswick Hall and Golf Club has
received numerous accolades recently including the prestigious Forbes Five-Star
Award in recognition of its exceptional level of luxury and service for the second
year in a row. Its new Pete Dye-designed course, Full Cry at Keswick Golf Club,
was just honored with a No. 3 ranking in Golfweek’s “Best Courses You Can Play”
in Virginia. Last year, Full Cry debuted at No. 47 in Golfweek’s “Best Resort

SafeGo – Prized Possessions safego.us

I truly appreciate one of my business’s wonderful perks of being provided
the opportunity to travel. Whether it be overseas, across the country, or
right here in the mid-Atlantic, if I’m away from home, I have a new safety
net that goes with me. I now use the SafeGo, a portable lightweight safe,
on a regular basis to protect nearly all of my valuables. A majority of hotel
rooms do not have safes, and SafeGo provides that security everywhere I go. SafeGo also works perfectly
right on the golf course. A convenient attached wire allows you to hook it right to your cart or golf bag.
Now no one can just come by and haul off your goodies. I also used it on a recent trip to the beach for
my car keys, wallet, etc. A neat feature is that the earplug or headphone opening allows you to keep your
phone protected while still being able to enjoy some tunes or a ball game. With its very creative design,
travelers must have one. It will make a terrific holiday gift for the golfer on your list. (Ciattei)

Clear Golf Balls – No Ordinary Ball clear-sports.com

I’m relatively sure most of you don’t know about this product because even
though I work in the golf business, I had never been introduced to Clear
Golf Balls before. But, these balls definitely turned my head. I know of
no other USGA conforming golf ball that is made on a limited basis. The
developers of the ball stress that the core of this ball tops any ball on the
market. The stronger core produces greater speed that brings you greater distance, and who doesn’t want
that? For this writer and reviewer, performance matters most, and I have not been disappointed. My first
drive off the tee held straight and LONG. Iron and putting feels produced solid results. The catch with
the Clear Golf Ball – you cannot buy them in stores. Available through an invitation-only membership
program, 12 dozen Clear Golf Balls are delivered to your door each year. If you are a serious golfer
looking to get the best out of your game, you’ll find a visit to their website worth the time. (Ciattei)

Tee-bra – Comfort Control tee-bra.com

Having owned only one sports bra in my life, I was a bit skeptical to test
out the Tee-bra. Developed to provide a non-irritating garment for women
while exercising, Tee-bra is a combination t-shirt and sports bra. I first
tried it out while doing my daily walking and bike riding. Next I wore
one during a way too infrequent visit to the golf course. Happily, I found
it to be a comfortable and supportive garment that I could wear layered
under another top. Although I would probably not wear it alone, I could
see younger women doing just that. I think women golfers will love this
product. It eliminated the rubbing or irritation that I always seemed to get
from a traditional bra while out on the links. I also really enjoy the fact
that Tee-bra is an easy care garment which washed well. The top comes
in black, blue, and white and sizes small, medium, and large. I highly
recommend Tee-bra as an alternative that will put you back in control of
your comfort! (Hartman)

Grip Boost Golf Spray – Hold on to What You Got gripboost.com

This pretty cool and very useful golf product has been developed locally.
Football fans may remember Matt Furstenburg, a former University of
Maryland tight end who also played for the Baltimore Ravens. Matt and
his research team have created Grip Boost, a spray that restores grip to
both golf gloves and clubs. This summer’s extreme hot weather provided me with the perfect opportunity
to test this product. The temperature that day on the golf course hovered around 99°, with a heat index of
110° and unbearable humidity. Well, Grip Boost proved essential for me to hold the club without worry
even though I was sweating like Paul Newman in “Cool Hand Luke.” I’m a player who plays with or
without a golf glove depending on how I feel that day. Having a good grip determines the success of each
of my shots. Grip Boost Golf Spray, a mess-free easy-to-use product, may well become a go to resource for
better results in my golf bag. (Ciattei)

Aureus Golf Shoes – Game Changer aureus-usa.com

So, my buddy, Nick, says he has a pair of shoes he thinks might fit me. You
have to understand that Nick is the kind of guy who loves new toys and
gadgets, so I’m imagining something like glow-in-the-dark shoes. Anyway,
I get the very attractive shoes ... Aureus “Taurus.” I slip them on (elastic
laces), and they feel great immediately. They slip off and on in a second
and would be great for airports. I know what you’re thinking, but they really feel solid on your feet. I wear
them to the driving range sometimes, and I forget that I’m not wearing spikes. I can actually feel the
traction the soles give me. Now, I’m just your average Joe. I don’t know much about shoe construction, so
I’m not going to go into what Aureus’ leather uppers and lining do for breathability, mesh fabric backing
for comfort, their AM-TECH direct injected insole and midsole, or thermoplastic polyurethane outsole. I’m
just going to tell you that these are the most comfortable and versatile shoes I've ever worn ... and I owe it
all to my buddy, Nick. Who’d have thought? (Sebastian)

Aquasana Active Filter Bottle – Clean Living aquasana.com

Every athlete knows the importance of hydration. While I don’t consider
myself an athlete per se, I do fall into the category of people who enjoy
athletic activities. Whether I’m at my Rumba class or out on the golf
course in the hot summer, my Aquasana filter bottle gives me the water
I need and the purity that I want. I fill the bottle with tap water and
the economical long-life filter removes over 99% of bacteria, lead, and
chlorine. You get professional grade filtration at your fingertips. With a
cost/gallon similar to most basic filters, $0.18 a gallon, I save hundreds
versus bottled water. Best of all each eco-friendly filter replaces over 600
bottles of bottled water. Enjoy the benefits of a portable water-bottling
plant in your cup holder! (Barge)

ThreadLab – Closet in a Box mythreadlab.com

The future of clothes buying has arrived. I realize many of you already
purchase your apparel online because you just don’t have the time to go
to stores, but the people at ThreadLab take it a step further. Imagine a
store that knows what styles and colors you like and your sizes. Set up your
custom profile online at ThreadLab, and they will hand pick items, box
them, and deliver them to your door. You can set up a monthly, quarterly,
or yearly account. If you want to try it once, that’s OK too! You are
NEVER locked in to a subscription service. They offer a wide selection
of gear from which choose because ThreadLab partners with more than
50 brands. I have to admit, when I received my box, it felt like opening a goodie bag with plenty of nice
surprises inside. I felt like the proverbial kid on Christmas morning. I’m so glad they didn’t send me that
giant Easter Bunny outfit. Fill your closet with some nifty new threads. (Ciattei)

Most players surely want to play one of the best golf courses in the world.
My goals have changed from playing more golf to playing more of a variety
of courses throughout my travels. That may be why this book really caught
my interest and made me realize right away that I have not even scratched
the surface of what I would like to do. Sabino lays out the different ways
and formulas he has used to gain access to the most exclusive golf clubs in
the world. Think about what the author does. It comes down to networking
in the golf world. From meeting members at country clubs to playing in a

Palm Desert, California ~ Sun-sational
Golf Mecca

Nick Ciattei

Watching that delightfully cheesy 1963 film “Palm
Springs Weekend” that starred Troy Donahue and Connie
Stevens first introduced me to the Palm Springs area of
the Coachella Valley of California. In the early 1970s, I
witnessed a more proper presentation of the area each
year when I would watch the annual Bob Hope Desert
Classic. This golf event was one of the originators of
mixing pros of the PGA with Hollywood stars and even
political figures. Nothing compares to seeing the Rat
Pack camp it up or a former president hack it up on the
golf course. On a recent visit to the left coast, I decided
to take in a week of red-hot sunshine in Palm Desert.

Palm Desert, a city in Riverside County,
is located approximately 14 miles east
of Palm Springs. It takes about two
hours to drive there from San Diego or
the Los Angeles suburbs. Palm Desert
has been a major center of growth
in the Palm Springs area and seen a
tremendous population increase over
the past thirty years considering that it
has expanded from only 1,500 residents
Desert Springs when the community was incorporated

back in 1973 to more than 48,000 today. As you would expect, Palm Desert has
become a very popular retreat for “snowbirds” from colder climates (the Eastern
and Northern United States and Canada), who swell its population by an estimated
31,000 each winter. Lodging and hospitality consumes a major portion of the local
tourist-based economy with more than 30 motels consisting of 5,000 rooms. Room
rates raise dramatically higher during those “escape from winter” times from
December through March, the chief tourist season. Tariffs for both golf and lodging
fall to much more modest prices during the valued off season.

The incredible climate here provides a "Dreamer"
12-month golfing season because the
surrounding geography influences the
Coachella Valleyʼs climate. High mountain
ranges on three sides and a south-sloping
valley floor all contribute to its unique
year-round warm conditions and the
balmiest winters in the western United
States with daytime highs mostly in the
low 80s. It really heats up in the summer
months with routine highs approaching

places in the United States and a
must visit for any golf enthusiast.

The city’s first golf course, Shadow
Mountain opened in 1952. That grew
to four courses by 1962 when Palm
Desert Country Club opened. Today
there are more than 30 golf courses
located within 10 miles of the city, Desert Willow – Mountain View

and nearly every course in the valley provides picture perfect backdrops of the
surrounding mountains and Desert Springs. In the late 1970s and 1980s, a wave of
private golf clubs and destination resorts and hotels were established.

The four-star JW Marriott Desert Springs Golf Resort and Spa offers two Ted
Robinson designed championship golf courses. The resort features a wide range of
top-quality amenities, including five separate pools and a world-class signature spa.

A premium public facility in Palm Desert, the Desert Willow Golf Resort, also
provides two championship Southern California golf courses designed by Dr.
Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry. The Firecliff Course and the Mountain View Course
have emerged as favorite places to play in the Palm Springs area for many. Golf
Digest and Golf World have both recognized the courses as two of the best California
has to offer. Firecliff has more than 100 bunkers and numerous water hazards and
is quite challenging in comparison to the Mountain View Course with its resort-
type wider fairways. The Westin Desert Willow Villas provides wonderful
accommodations for stay and plays. This all-villa resort furnishes accommodations
suffused with soothing amenities and personal services designed to help you feel at
home, even when you may be thousands of miles away. Just steps from your villa

you find an array of resort amenities
including several swimming pools and
lighted tennis courts. My party found
the food and service way above average.
I highly recommend it!

Desert Willow Villas Another course that needs to be
mentioned in Palm Desert is Bighorn
Golf Club. You may remember the
“Battle at Bighorn,” a prime-time, under
the lights golf shoot-out that featured

Tiger Woods and Annika Sorenstam
against David Duval and Karrie Webb.
Well, that unique event was held here.
The stunning terrain took center stage
during the telecast on the Canyons
Course, designed by Tom Fazio.
Bighorn also showcases the Arthur
Hills-designed Mountains Course as
well as the Canyons, two of golf’s most
Bighorn legendary 18s. This facility, set 1,000

feet above the valley floor, has earned
an extraordinary reputation among the world’s most luxurious resort communities.
Plus, you will be amazed by some of the residences along the golf courses.

The more than 70 additional courses in nearby Palm Springs,
Rancho Mirage, and across the valley create the West Coast’s
Golf Capital. Many greats of the game have played here. It
started with the Bob Hope Desert Classic, then the LPGA
Dinah Shore, The Skins Game, and even prime-time golf. You
can enjoy the same courses that Palmer, Nicklaus, Stewart,
Woods, Trevino, Sorenstam, Pak, and Wie have all played.
Palm Desert in the Coachella Valley of California well deserves
a golf visit no matter what time of year.
