Golf Groupies

Probably some of my most pleasurable
days in this business crop up when
I go out and meet with some of the
many golf groups that travel with
Golf Guide Golf Getaways. As one
who has engaged in many golf buddy
adventures myself, it gives me the
chance to interact with golfers and
pick their brains a little to learn about
their experiences. Golfers travel from
as far away as England to our area, and
I’m fortunate to have run into many
interesting people who I’m glad to say that after some years I can now call friends.
These friends include the brother of former Miami Dolphin QB and VT standout
Don Strock as well as the optometrist in Baltimore who helps ESPN Draft Guru Mel
Kiper see better. Former NBA player Barney Cable, all 6'8" of him, also enjoys golf
trips that we arrange for him on an annual basis. He just requires extra long golf
carts! Most of the time I try to meet them before a round to avoid altered moods
should they score poorly on the links. I also like to hook up with them at a local
establishment like the Eagles or Moose Club or a popular brew pub/sports bar.
On rare occasions I can direct them to some
leisurely activities other than golf to occupy their
time. This year, I was able to arrange a trip to
Camden Yards in Baltimore for one of my groups
from Canada. We took in the O’s game, went to
Pickles Pub, and the guys had a great time. Being
a season ticket holder to Oriole’s games allows me
to get discounts on single game tickets. So, if your
buddy trip would like to add a game there, we can
do it.
The courses themselves chiefly draw golfers to
this region. The Shenandoah Valley provides
unsurpassed beauty and value. Frederick and other
areas of the Free State feature some of the best
golf Maryland offers. We focus on Gettysburg,
Pennsylvania, which is rich in history and quality golf. If you like to partake in a
wager or two, we can get you close to the ponies and the casino in Charles Town,
West Virginia (see page 44). This year we are pleased to add Williamsburg, Virginia,
to our menu.
Fall and spring are the best times to travel, so get your buddies together and let us
do the rest. Being a groupie does not have to be such a bad thing.

The Woods ~ A Winner Every Time

Nick Ciattei

The State of West Virginia is blessed
with some beautiful landscapes,
and few of them rival the natural
setting found around The Woods in
the Eastern Panhandle. I have been
a long-time fan of this facility, and
even though it has gone through a
metamorphosis of sorts, it remains
as one of the most attractive golf
destinations either for a daily fee
day trip or an extended stay. The
Mountain View Hole 2 Par 4

bones that developer Ray Johnston
laid down endure at The Woods. The 18-hole championship Mountain View course
and the 18-hole mid-length Stony Lick course make up the heart and soul here
and look and play as good today, if not better than ever before. Both courses can
accommodate every level of golfer from beginner to expert with varying levels
of difficulty. The wide variety of holes on each course make them fun, fair, and
challenging.

The Mountain View course wanders
around a wooded plateau where
the majestic Third Hill Mountain
dominates the views. Most holes play
relatively flat but several offer some
dramatic elevation changes. Carved
from a forest, dogwood, maple,
oak, and pine trees frame Mountain
View’s fairways. The Mountain View
course at The Woods opened in 1989
and provides a wonderful jaunt over Mountain View Hole 8 Par 4

hills and valleys. At 6600 yards from
the back tees you’ll find plenty of room to hit the big stick all day long. Each hole
has been given a descriptive moniker, and you’ll easily see why most rounds on
Mountain View are far from boring. The two par 3s on the front nine both play over
water, including the third, entitled
“Ballwasher” featured on the cover.
Three holes on the back nine,
fifteen, sixteen, and eighteen, stand
out to me. The par 5s, fifteen and
the closer, are types of holes that
can make or break your rounds. Put
it this way. You can just as easily
make a double on these holes as you
can make a birdie. The lusty view
from the short par 4 sixteenth’s tee
Mountain View Hole 18 Par 5

box that sits nearly 70 feet above
the fairway is touted for its sheer
drama.

Stony Lick Hole 1 Par 3 The mid-length Stony Lick course
at The Woods complements the
regulation course perfectly. It plays
to a par 62 from three sets of tees
that range from 3000 to 3700 yards
in length. Stony Lick was the first
mid-length course to be built in

the Shenandoah and Cumberland
valleys when it opened in 2002 and
was conceived from a third nine that
The Woods featured. Don’t confuse
Stony Lick with a pitch and putt
course you might find at the beach.
It provides plenty of challenge.
High handicappers, youngsters,
seniors, and families who want to
play together find it especially fun.
Holes here have been named just
like its sister course. Perhaps no hole
at The Woods is more recognized than the hole at the golf course entrance. The
first hole on Stony Lick, a downhill 170-yard par three, presents a striking 80 foot
drop from tee to green. The facility’s signature logo sits just beyond the putting
surface embedded in white into the landscape. Five par 4s are integrated into the
mix allowing even the best of players to work on the scoring zone from 100 yards
in. In 2015, The Woods routed a FootGolf course along the Stony Lick layout so that
someone who plays traditional golf may play alongside someone lacing it up for a
round of FootGolf. The Woods has been accredited as an American FootGolf League
(AFGL) course.

Cover Story

The Woods has never
been one to shy
away from trying
something new. This year
they are holding a Tournament of
Champions. Organizations hosting
their fundraising tournaments at
The Woods will be eligible to have
their winning teams compete at the
end of the season to earn additional
Stony Lick Hole 13 Par 4 monies to support their programs.

Thirteen charities have already
been penciled in for the season-ending event. “We've been looking for something to
give back to the community. It just came to me,” The Woods Golf Pro Ron Springer
said. After seeing numbers of tournament participants decrease recently, he hopes
the project will help increase those totals. The top three teams in the Tournament
of Champions will earn their charity extra money. The first place team will collect
$2,000 for their charity, the second place team $1,000, and the third place team
$500. The winners themselves will also pick up prizes. Springer noted that the first
year might not show a huge boost in participation, but he hopes that over time The
Woods and the affiliations can build on those numbers.

Since I have spent so much time
focusing on golf, I can’t forget to
mention the Sleepy Creek Spa at The
Woods that offers treatments for
both men and women. If you have
been wearing yourself out on the
course or in the back yard, Sleepy
Creek may have just what you need
to get reenergized. Also check out
the Clubhouse Grille & Pub located at
The Woods clubhouse where you can
meet up with friends for a relaxing
lunch or dinner, dine fireside in the
pub, and watch the play on Mountain
View's #18 fairway and green!

Drive to The Woods in just 90 minutes from the Baltimore
and Washington beltways for the perfect day trip getaway
for golfing and spa or spend your next getaway in a
vacation rental at The Woods. Choose from the four
bedroom Meadow Cottages ideal for small groups, the
privately owned Pinecrest Cottages, or other unique and
privately owned villas, cabins, and cottages. I personally
know of quite a few people who went from being just
plain visitors of The Woods to becoming either part-time
or permanent residents. The lifestyle there can be a win
whether for just the day or a lifetime.

Half Moon Bay ~ Pure Heaven

Wes Bolyard

I am fully aware that the course farther south on the Pacific Coast Highway gets all
the accolades, but once you have played the two courses at The Ritz-Carlton, Half
Moon Bay, you will realize that other exciting golf waits to be played in Northern
California. The classic style of Old Course and the rugged beauty of Ocean Course
enhance the picturesque setting of this iconic hotel positioned atop a cliff with the
Pacific Ocean washing against the shore below.

Half Moon Bay, the only San
Francisco Bay area luxury
ocean front resort, is located
just 23 miles from San Francisco
International Airport and is a
great place to start if you want
to visit other areas on the west
coast. You can reach San Francisco
in 45 minutes, Monterey in an

Ocean Course

hour and fifty minutes by heading
down the beautiful coastal drive, and
Napa in an hour and forty minutes
to experience wine. In the spring
of 2001, the hotel opened under the
management of The Ritz-Carlton
and is a separate entity from the two
golf courses. They offer 261 rooms
and suites, along with 54 cottages
separate from the hotel. A variety of Ocean Hole 6

choices for dining include Navio for fine dining; The Conservatory that presents
fresh, organic, community grown ingredients; the Cork Wine Bar; and The Ocean
Terrace. Their 16,000 square-foot spa includes a full-service salon, 15 treatment
rooms, a co-ed Roman mineral bath with fireplace, sauna, and steam room. They
also furnish an impressive setting for meetings, conferences, and retreats. With
the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean, who could resist having their wedding and
reception held at this spectacular venue? A myriad of other activities will keep
you entertained, such as biking on the Coastal Trail, tide pools at the beach, a large
indoor swimming pool, four lighted bocce ball courts, s’mores and conversations at
the fire pits, and of course, golf.

Golf General Manager and PGA Master Professional Bill Troyanoski explained
“The property is quite large, and initially, the land was developed as part of a
master plan for golf, housing, and eventually a hotel.” Old Course, a parkland style
course, opened in 1973 with fairways that meander through the development and
a sundry of styles of houses with beautiful landscaping. The par 4 signature hole,

8 GOLFGUIDEINC.COM

Golf Destination

number 18, travels downhill with
great views all the way from tee
to green as it is set against the
Pacific on the right, a barranca
to negotiate on the second shot,
and the backdrop of the hotel.
An engaging personality named
Moon Mullins helped to make this
course be a great success from the

Ocean Hole 13

start. The first golf professional at Ocean Hole 15
Half Moon Bay Golf Links, as well
as for the next 30 years, Mullins’
keen sense of humor, competitive
nature, infectious smile, and
engaging stories made everyone
feel welcome. The dining area that
shares a building with the pro shop
was named the Mullins Bar &
Grill in his honor.

Ocean Course opened in 1997 as a links-style course. With natural beauty that
follows the lay of the land, it offers views of the Pacific Ocean from every hole.
Brett Bergschneider, director of sales and marketing, says, “One of the beauties of
Ocean Course is that if you miss your fairway, your ball will probably be in another
fairway.” Now don’t get the idea that the fairways lie really close together. No, the
fairly wide and forgiving fairways are defined by wisps of native grasses growing
between them. They also have a fair amount of undulation, making it interesting
to negotiate. All the sprinkler heads are marked to the middle of the greens to help

with yardages. About the only trees on
the course can be found on the left side
of the number 8 fairway. This dogleg
left par 5 has some thought provoking
undulations as you approach the green,
and a fairway sand bunker that sits
about 75 yards before the green guards
the shot up the middle of the fairway.
The fantastic final four holes play right
against the ocean. Sixteen, the signature
hole and a downhill par 4, requires a
Ocean Hole 16 second shot be hit over a small barranca

and on to the green that slopes left to right. The par 3 seventeenth sits against the
ocean bluffs, while the final uphill par-5 could float into a gentle wind.

Old Course has hosted numerous U.S. Open qualifiers over the years, and Ocean
Course has hosted U.S. Open qualifiers for women. Bill says “What makes Half
Moon Bay Golf Links special is that it is two great designs that play very different.
You experience Ocean Course, which is a links golf course. It plays on the ground
as well as in the air and has an outward nine and an inward nine that have the hues
and textures and colors reminiscent of being back in Scotland. It gives you that feel.
Also what gives you that feel is playing in a marine climate.”

“Old Course has a very different feel.
Both nines return to the clubhouse and
have an old course traditional layout.
The finishing holes are dramatic with the
ongoing return to the ocean. There is a
barranca on sixteen that you must fly;
the hole has such an amazing character.
What I think combined between the
two that makes it special is that when
you arrive here, while golf is your major
reason for coming, you find something
else. Your mind just travels; it’s an Old Hole 17

experience, not just about golf but more about from something inside. It just takes
you away, the vistas of the ocean, the two golf courses, and the beauty surrounding
the area. That is why people come here. I feel that the future of the game is through
our kids, and this property is 100% behind this.”

While they do not have a driving range, they do have an excellent short game
practice area. A caddy program is available for Ocean Course (with prior
request). The courses offer stay and play packages with the Ritz-Carlton that can
be purchased through the hotel and use dynamic pricing for the rate for play,
depending on the time of day you want to play your round. Keep in mind that the
normal temperature ranges from about 58° to 64°, so you might want to bring a
jacket.

I can think of no better way to get away from it all while you relax, enjoy exciting
golf and the beauty of Northern California while you experience a pleasurable visit
at the Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay.

seventeenth hole that features a tee shot along the river’s

Designed by architect J. Michael Poellot and two-time
U.S. Open Champion Ernie Els, Whiskey Creek feels as
big and bold as the land itself. Bordered by a high ridge of
hardwoods and a winding, free-flowing creek, the course
features wetlands, rock outcroppings, stone walls, streams,
and dramatic views of the Catoctin Mountains. Like most
tested and true championship courses, Whiskey Creek, an
honest golf course, presents its challenges and hazards in
plain sight. The holes at Whiskey Creek were designed to
test a player’s shot making ability, which is clearly evident
on the par 5 closer where ruins of an old farmhouse split
the fairway and offer a great risk-reward opportunity. Come
feel the drama that awaits just minutes off I-270, Exit 26, on
Route 80 in Urbana, Maryland.

Rated HHHH —Golf Digest

Ervin, The Woodlands opened in 1998 to critical acclaim.
Ervin himself said The Woodlands “truly ranks as my best
design” and GolfStyles called it “the best public course in
the Baltimore suburbs.” The Woodlands takes golfers on a

guard the lush bentgrass fairways and large, undulating
greens of the course’s enjoyable and challenging 18 holes.
Five sets of tees provide varying challenge levels for all

reputation of The Woodlands and the adjacent Diamond
Ridge Golf Course. It is located just minutes from Exit 17

Mountain View Golf Club ~ Sound Advice

Nick Ciattei

The growth of the internet in our lifetimes has changed dramatically how we find
the best places to visit or the finest services available. If you need to find premier
pasta or the top tree repair company in your area, you can probably find it online.
But no industry relies on these reviews more than travel and leisure businesses.
The sport of golf has an excellent resource for players to learn about courses. Golf
Advisor, much like its predecessor Trip Advisor, provides reviews made by players
just like you. Those golfers dish out plenty of kudos for Mountain View Golf Club.

This South-Central Pennsylvania facility
was rated the #3 course overall in the
state in 2016, as well as achieved the
#1 spot in the Keystone state for value,
staff friendliness, and pace of play. Even
more outstanding, reviewers recognize
Mountain View as the #4 golf course
for value in the U.S. These are mighty
big hooks to hang any hat on, but once
you play Mountain View you’ll easily
Hole 8 Par 5

understand. Now, I will be the first to
tell you that if you have never played this course, don’t expect lots of bells and
whistles. The simplicity of the region combined with the Ault-Clark layout make
Mountain View so popular.

The first nine holes at Mountain View Hole 16 Par 3
opened in 1978, and the second nine
made its debut in 1987. As you might
expect, they are two distinctly different
9-hole swings. More than 60 bunkers and
several lakes put a premium on accuracy
over the path of the 6400-yard excursion.
Its name best describes the landscape
of the course. An opulent backdrop of
the lofty hills of the Catoctin Mountains
surrounds the relatively flat Mountain
View course.

The front nine is considered more open compared to the longer, occasionally
tree-lined back nine. Spread across an exposed pasture with just golf holes to see, I
believe the outward nine plays a stroke or two easier than the back side. A series of
shorter par 4s early on the Mountain View front nine give players decent scoring
opportunities to get the round going in the right direction. A characteristic feature
of the front side is that fairway bunkers are found on every hole except the sixth,
where a couple of ponds tighten the fairway on the gentle dogleg left. The only par
5 on the front is eight, and at just 476 yards, many big hitters can get home in two.

at Mountain View. You will find more
elevation changes, several tree-lined
holes, and more water. The first four
holes on the back will make or break
your round, and locals will tell you it’s
their “Amen Corner.” The rest of the
nine again brings more trees into play
Hole 18 Par 5 that are quite evident on the short par 3

sixteenth, where they almost hang over
the putting surface. An awesome risk-reward 5 par closes Mountain View that has a
pond to the right of the green.

Some say first impressions are the most lasting. Golfers immediately see the pre-
Civil War farmhouse that serves as the clubhouse at Mountain View. The adjoining
Grill-Pavilion makes an excellent between-nines or post-round watering hole where
you can sit back and toss back a cold one as you overlook several holes.

Mountain View Golf Club is located just minutes from the historic Gettysburg
battlefields in Fairfield, PA, and it can be easily accessed from Harrisburg, Baltimore,
Washington, Hagerstown, and other points. It’s an easy day trip and one that comes
with some sound advice from golfers just like you.

Feature Story

Shenandoah Valley Golf Club ~ Golf Central

Nick Ciattei

The key to any company’s success
normally begins and ends with the
quality of service you receive. I guess
that is one of the primary reasons
Shenandoah Valley Golf Club in
Front Royal Virginia remains one of
the most popular golf facilities in the
mid-Atlantic. Having 27 beautiful golf
holes certainly doesn’t hurt either, but
SVGC’s commitment to caring for the
customer fuels their achievements.

Many of you reading this have more than likely played in an event at Shenandoah
Valley Golf Club. I’ve always considered the club to be golf central for outings in
the area. Local businesses and organizations have hosted their tournaments for
many consecutive years at Shenandoah Valley. The staff knows what it takes to
make a great outing. On the day of the event Shenandoah Valley Golf Club really
struts their stuff. Staff situates themselves throughout the course to help the pace
of play, get scoring updates on the course that leads to quicker posting after the
round, and provide beverages and snacks. Contests within the tournament include
longest drive, closest to the pin, and
chipping and putting. Standard outing
packages include range balls and snacks
at The Club 27 Fire Grill. From there, you
can choose a la carte what you would
like to serve at your competition. A staff
member will always be there to aid and
assist you in planning and organizing
the event. Whatever special needs you
may require can be handled from a
tournament gift to an after-event dinner. Blue Nine Hole 1 Par 5

Shenandoah Valley Golf Club is also renown for the events and leagues that occur
there on a regular basis. They just wrapped up their 16th annual Summer Two-Man.
The dates for the 18th Fall Two-Man are October 21 & 22. For the 22nd year, SVGC
hosts the Warren County Scramble, and this year it occurs on Saturday, August 5.
The Monday Men’s Senior League, one of the most successful leagues I’ve come
across, draws silvered haired gents from faraway counties each week. The ladies
hold their Senior League on Wednesdays.

At Shenandoah Valley, the course’s main challenges are found on tree-lined rolling
fairways with a mixed bag of pines, willows and tall hardwoods bordering the
majority of the holes. The superintendent does a great job in keeping growth under
control. Needed tree and branch removal occurs regularly here to provide a better
playing field. The three nines are the Red, White, and Blue, with the latter being

an addition to the original eighteen.
Everyone has their favorite, but most
would agree that the most difficult and
easily the longest is the Blue Nine. A pair
of really good par 5s opens and closes
this nine, which also features much
larger putting surfaces than the other
two nines. When you pair the Blue Nine
up with the Red Nine at Shenandoah
Valley, you get the par-72 combo that is
used most for major tournaments. You
can see the par 4 first hole on the Red Nine on your walk to the clubhouse. Short in
stature, you’ll want to focus on your approach shot here to a narrow, deep green.
Make up a stroke or two on the short par 5 closer on the Red, where birdies and
even eagles are within sight. The White Nine can be described as a shot-makers
circuit. Both par 3s on this circuit present plenty of challenge. The third plays uphill
while the eighth is known as one of the tougher greens to hit from the tee, and then
putting delivers even a bigger treat.
Many events conclude in the majestic clubhouse and the first-class banquet room.
The wrap around deck and stunning vistas make this facility extremely popular for
wedding receptions and parties. Contact a golf central staff member to set up your
charity outing or event at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club.

Out of the Bag

In May, some area courses saw more than 10" of rain. One area course is making it a
little easier to accept hearing the three most dreaded words in public golf...cart path only!
Meadows Farms in Locust Grove, VA, now offers a $5 off regular rate rebate to all players
any time they restrict travel to cart paths only. I don’t know of many golf courses that
make this offer, but we give the “Farm” a big thumbs up for being totally proactive.
The complete facelift for a golf facility on Maryland’s Eastern Shore now heads down
the home stretch. Harbourtowne will reopen in the spring of 2018 as Chesapeake Links.
World renowned Course Architect Pete Dye and his team have worked nonstop since
January 2016. No expense has been spared as they dug new ponds and moved mountains
of earth to create stunning rolling fairways, and the majority of the holes have been
contoured and seeded. The St. Michaels golf destination will also have a new resort named
the Lodge at Chesapeake Links. The new owner, Richard Cohen of Capital Properties, also
owns The Inn at Perry Cabin.

Billy Hurley III and the MAPGA Foundation are excited
to announce a new junior golf tournament, the Billy
Hurley III Junior Championship. This two-day, 36-hole
event will take place from July 31 to August 1 at the
U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course. The championship will
feature junior golfers ages 12-18 and will include one
boy’s division and one girl’s division. Military families
play a special role in Hurley’s life as he served as a
Surface Warfare Officer during five years active duty,
which included time on a destroyer in the Persian Gulf
protecting Iraqi oil platforms. Hurley is also the only
veteran on the PGA Tour. For more information about the
championship and to sign up for the two qualifying events
please visit mapga.com.
Colonial Williamsburg, a premier hospitality destination in Virginia, has been honored by
Golf Digest with a 2017 Editors’ Choice Award in the “Best Golf Resorts in the Mid-
Atlantic” category. The distinction was published in the May 2017 issue of the magazine.
Launched last year, this annual award identifies the “Best Things in Golf,” with an
emphasis on lifestyle properties, products, and services. In keeping with the outstanding
service and devotion to excellent golf as indicated by the awards, the Golden Horseshoe
Gold Course will debut on July 1 following a multi-million dollar renovation of all greens,
fairways, roughs, and bunkers.
The Middle Atlantic PGA Section proudly announced the selection of PGA Professional
Fred Funk to the MAPGA Hall of Fame Class of 2018. He will be inducted into the Hall of
Fame in March 2018. The native of Takoma Park, MD, turned professional in 1981. Fred
Funk performed as the golf coach at his alma mater, the University of Maryland, from
1982 to 1988. He was an accomplished player in MAPGA events, winning the MAPGA
Professional Championship three years in a row and the Maryland Open in 1983 and
1987. He was also the MAPGA Player of the Year in 1983. Funk has won eight times on
the PGA Tour and nine times on the PGA Tour Champions.
In other MAPGA news, Matthew Schulze has been named the 2017 Middle Atlantic
PGA Professional of the Year. Schulze, the Tournament Director for the LPGA Kingsmill
Championship, serves as the President of the Middle Atlantic PGA. This high honor
bestows special recognition on a PGA Professional for overall performance including
leadership of, service to, and promoting the game of golf.

Fifty Strong–Better Bottles Be50Strong.com

What a great American company and very nice product we have with the
Fifty Strong water bottles called Simply Better Bottles, named so for good
reason. The bottles come in different styles with several features unique to
each style. One of the most vital aspects to being a healthy golfer is keeping
hydrated on the course. The Pocket Mixer and Mix It Up models come with
an agitator of sorts that allows you to mix your favorite protein or flavored
drinks. It has helped me to stymie my cola habit and replace it with more
beneficial substitutes. Just as advertised, Green Camo is a super insulated
bottle donned in camo graphics. Chug 36–you guessed it–a big boy that
holds 36 ounces yet fits into most cup holders. Fifty Strong has dozens of other designs, some found right
in the Ciattei kitchen, and all are manufactured in their family owned business in Lima, Ohio. The owners
do their part by fabricating everything in the USA. Now, do your part. You’ll find a great online shopping
experience on their website.

Toast–Creative Covers toastmade.com

This one-of-a-kind item would make a great gift any time of year for
just about any sports fan. You could just plop down $25 for another hat
that will most likely find a place in the closet, or you could get a piece of
TOAST. These actual wood veneer covers can be tailored for your personal
electronic devices. I decided to stand out with my business and put my
logo on my iPad’s cover. You could choose to put your favorite sports
team or golfer or maybe just an adage. I love my Toast and get comments
and compliments about it all the time. Toast comes in four styles: walnut,
ebony, bamboo and ash. Whether you have a smartphone, tablet, or gaming
console, Toast can cover it in style. We found the application easy to follow,
and the final product exceeded our expectations. Customize part of your lifestyle and be epic with Toast,
another proud USA product.

Pitchfix–No More Excuses pitchfixusa.com

For the third time we are discussing a Pitchfix product, and I can say it
never gets old! If you are still repairing ball marks with an ancient tool
or even a tee, you need to get with the program. You most likely do more
damage to the green in your effort to repair the ball mark you just made.
The latest in the line of successful divot tools from Pitchfix, the Fusion
2.5, blends the switchblade and Twister designs previously reviewed. The
new model even contains a built-in pencil sharpener. Continuing the trend of earlier designs, the Fusion
line makes ball mark repairs easier for golfers and helps reduce pitch mark repair damage to greens.
“The Fusion 2.5 Pin combines the characteristics of the successful Hybrid line with the award-winning pin
technology of the Twister 2.0,” said Bart Fokke, CEO of Pitchfix. “This is without doubt the best divot
repair tool Pitchfix has ever produced.” You have no more excuses for not fixing your ball marks correctly.
Pitchfix made sure of it.

Linksoul–The American Golfer linksoul.com

The folks at Linksoul have built a brand unlike others in the golf fashion
world. Being more of a lifestyle to them, they live and breath the sport
through their clothing and accessories. Summer always brings new
styles, and Linksoul has you covered. This year, a 1930s magazine called
The American Golfer inspired them to create commemorative T-shirts
proclaiming passion for the game. Linksoul maintains the highest quality
available in all of their apparel, and their cotton golf shirts remain as some
of the most comfortable. The brand also offers custom branded Snell golf
balls, ball markers, and a top-notch golf club bag. John Ashworth came up
with the concept 20 years ago while establishing the Ashworth clothing line. The fruits of his labors can be
picked here. Enjoy this year’s crop.

CooLHeadS–A Cool Head Better Than None getcoolheads.com

The dog days of summer have arrived, and as much as we would like to go
out and play a round of golf, sometimes high temperatures make it just too
darn hot to enjoy. Sunburn and heat exhaustion can lead to a miserable
day on the links. CooLHeadS, a distinctive piece of headwear, will protect
you from both the sun and the extreme heat. A normal hat protects the
dome, whereas CooLHeadS shelters your head, neck, and shoulder areas.
The 100% terry cloth sun wear felt very comforting during a blistering day chasing the ball around the
course. The elastic headband makes it suitable for all head sizes. Think of it as a half towel half hood to
better understand the concept of CooLHeadS. You will not have to soak it in water. Just put it on, and let
the cooling begin. A great addition to the beach bag or at the pool, CooLHeadS can help you live summer
more pleasantly.

Sun Therapè Pro Sport–Get a Grip on Protection suntherapeprosport.com

Believe it or not, we expose our skin to more than 5,200 hours of sun in a
decade. Just about all of the hundreds of sun protection products available
do their job well, but few are made specifically for a particular group of
people. Sun Therapè Pro Sport was formulated precisely for athletes, so it
goes on smooth, not sticky or slippery. Nothing can be worse than applying
your sunscreen and then butchering your next golf shot because of the
leftover mess. Different from other products, Sun Therapè Pro Sport, a
sunscreen/moisturizer hybrid, absorbs quickly leaving no unwanted residue. So, you can quickly refocus on
the next shot at hand. With alarming increases in skin cancer these days, you need to protect yourself from
the sun. The Sun Therapè Pro Sport with SPF 35 comes in both a face and body lotion as well as a sport
spray. Take time to tell your “skin story” and play on.

CEP Compression Socks–Now You See Me, cepcompression.com
Now You Don’t

We’d like to follow up on a review we did on CEP Compression Socks
last summer. We were so impressed by the performance of the product
from a golfer’s standpoint that we almost forgot they were compression
socks. So, you knew we were delighted to try the Men’s Dynamic+ No
Show Socks. Golfer’s don’t necessarily enjoy tan lines around the ankles.
It doesn’t look good with a pair of flip flops. The CEP Compression No Show almost eliminates that. The
incredibly lightweight material provides extra-strong compression and stability. This golfer will not be seen
purchasing the pack of six golf socks at the department store ever again. Since my feet and legs have not
aged gracefully, I demand comfort and performance. I get both with the CEP Compression Sock. How
about a 200+ wear guarantee? That my friends is one sweet sock.

“Ben Hogan’s Secret Fundamental– triumphbooks.com
What He Never Told the World” by Larry Miller (Triumph Books)

Few secrets remain about the golf swing. For years people and experts have
dissected Ben Hogan’s iconic swing to determine what made it work. The
infamous photo of his one iron on the 18th hole of the final round of the
1950 U.S. Open at Merion probably graces more clubhouse walls than any
other golf photo. In Ben Hogan’s Secret Fundamental, former PGA Tour
player Larry Miller reveals the secret (it wouldn’t be much of a secret if I
broadcast it here) and offers opinions as to what made Hogan the greatest
ball striker in the history of the game. Miller adds tales about Hogan from
those who knew the somewhat secretive man the best. And Miller does
what any great Life Member of the PGA of America does. He shares useful
tips and drills to help golfers come much closer to playing the game the
way Hogan did.

Charles Town, WV ~ Golf ‘N Gamble

Czervik: I'll bet you a hundred bucks you slice it into the woods.
Judge Smails: Gambling is illegal at Bushwood sir, and I NEVER SLICE!

[Swings club, slices ball into woods] —Caddyshack 1980
Well Judge Smails, I hate to disagree
with you, but the sport of golf and
gambling activities go hand in hand. I
would venture to say that not long after
the first golf shot was struck many,
many moons ago that some type of
wager was probably made. I’ve always
said if you golf with friends and no
wagers occur, they must not be really
good friends! After all, who better to
take a couple bucks from than a good
compadre. Most bets on the golf course
are friendly stakes, the ante and pot
never break anyone’s bank. Another
solid connection between the sport of
golf and legalized gambling occurs off
the course. Many of the golfers I know
love playing the ponies or sitting in on
a Texas Hold’em poker game. No area
in our region combines all three like
Charles Town, West Virginia.

It doesn’t seem that long ago that Charles Town Races’ thoroughbred track
struggled and faced certain demise. Slot machines and table games saved the
historic facility, and now horse racing not only still lives, it has gotten better than
ever. The Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races also has several outstanding
restaurants and the Event Center features national acts and comedians. You will
definitely find a first-class center for entertainment and fun there.
The Turf Rodeway Inn and Suites have put together golf packages for many years.
Their location adjacent to the casino and track make them a winning choice for
arranging a golf trip there. The Marcus
family owned and operated it since
1955. They rebuilt after a fire in 2000
and expanded it over their tenure. The
infamous horse structure still welcomes
guests perched high atop the entrance
canopy. The property, now a Choice
Hotel, features a rewards program.
Amenities include a free continental

bar, as well as the new Surf and Turf Restaurant. Turf can handle golf packages for
one person to groups as large as 50. Your stay includes a free welcome cocktail, free
sleeve of balls, and $10 casino voucher.

You can count on a royal flush at Locust Hill Golf Club, the home golf course for
Charles Town and Jefferson County. One of the more exciting golf courses in the
four-state area, Locust Hill features an abundance of water hazards that come into
play on 11 holes as well as lots of trouble along both sides of most fairways. This
course requires patience and maybe some good fortune to get through a round
without some gambling payoff.

Locust Hll Hole 8 Par 5 A healthy 7000 yards from the tips make
Locust Hill a formidable challenge. A
tough four-hole stretch opens things
on the front nine. You don’t need to
try your luck here. Just hit it straight
and make your pars. The reachable
par 5 eighth at Locust Hill will delight
risk-takers. Going for the green in two
may lead to a jackpot or you might bust
by finding the water around the green.

The second nine at Locust Hill is known
for what is one of the best collection of
closing holes the mid-Atlantic offers.
Holes fourteen through eighteen will
make or break your round. You will
find water coming into play on each
shot from the par 4 fifteenth. The par 3
sixteenth leads to a built-up island green
with an almost uphill shot over the pond.
You can make up a shot, or two, on the Locust Hll Hole 16 Par 3

par 5 seventeenth if you avoid the misfortunes that border the hole. Locust Hill
wraps up with a big time par 4 that plays 455 yards from the back tees with water
on the right and in front of a long well-bunkered green.

Several other regional courses are
included in golf packages in Charles
Town. The Woods in Hedgesville and
Cacapon Resort in Berkeley Springs
are the other two gems in the Eastern
Panhandle of West Virginia. The Woods
has the 18-hole championship Mountain
View course as well as the Stony
Lick course, an 18-hole mid-length
layout. Robert Trent Jones designed
Cacapon Hole 18 Par 5

some magic at Cacapon with 18 holes
of uninterrupted golf set in the wilds of a West Virginia State Park. Just across
the state line to the south you’ll find two adventurous tracks at Rock Harbor in

of tees, and several of the most exciting holes you’ll ever play. Travel a bit farther
