Leader: God our merciful Father, we gather here in imitation of your Son who came

Word of God: Tobit 2:1-8
When I returned home, I was reunited with my wife Anna and my son Tobias. At the
Harvest Festival, which is also called the festival of weeks, I sat down to a delicious
meal. When I saw how much food there was on the table, I said to Tobias, “Son, go
out and find some fellow Jew who is living in poverty here in exile, someone who takes
God’s commands seriously. Bring him back with you, so that he can share this festival
meal with us. I won’t start eating until you come back.”

So, Tobias went out to look for such a person. But he quickly returned, shouting,
“Father! Father!”

“Yes, what is it?” I asked.

“One of our people has just been murdered! Someone strangled him and threw his
body into the market-place.”

I jumped up and left the table without even touching my food. I removed the body from
the street and carried it to a little shed, where I left it until sunset, when I could bury it.
Then I returned home and washed, to purify myself. In deep sorrow I ate my dinner. I
was reminded of what the prophet Amos has said to the people of Bethel, “Your
festivals will be turned into funerals and your glad songs will become cries of grief.” I
began to weep. After sunset I went out, dug a grave, and buried the man.

My neighbours thought I was crazy. “Haven’t you learnt anything?” they asked. “You
have already been hunted down once for burying the dead, and you would have been
killed if you had not run away. But here you are doing the same thing over again.”

Reflection:
Dear friends, let us thank the Lord for giving all of us the generosity to sympathize and
pray with this family of our departed brother/sister…. The Word of God reminds us that
caring for those in sorrow and pain, even burying the dead, is a praiseworthy work of
mercy before the Lord. We remember Jesus telling us that whatever we do even the
least of his brethren, we do it to him! May our prayerful presence console and
encourage the bereaved family of brother/sister…. We are confident that the Lord will
favourably answer our prayers and grant eternal light and peace to our brother/sister.

Rosary: The joyful mysteries
(1) The Annunciation:
The angel Gabriel was God’s messenger who brought the Good News to Mary that
she was to be the Mother of the Saviour. It was Good News of salvation to the whole
world. Our presence here and our prayers are Good News of consolation, peace and
support to the bereaved family of our brother/sister…. Let us pray for the repose of the
soul of….

grace. May we continue to find one another in Christian charity whenever we are at
aloss in sadness, pain, loneliness, or sickness.

Word of God: Luke 23:32-43
Two other men, both criminals, were also led out to be put to death with Jesus. When
they came to the place called ‘The Skull’, they crucified Jesus there, and the two
criminals, one on his right and the other on his left. Jesus said, “Forgive them, Father!
They don’t know what they are doing.”

They divided his clothes among themselves by throwing dice. The people stood there
watching while the Jewish leaders made fun of him: “He saved others; let him save
himself if he is the Messiah whom God has chosen!”

The soldiers also made fun of him; they came up to him and offered him cheap wine,
and said, “save yourself if you are the king of the Jews!”

One of the criminals hanging their hurled insults at him, “aren’t you the Messiah? Save
yourself and us!”

The other one, however, rebuked him, saying, “Don’t you fear God? You received the
same sentence as he did. Ours, however, is only right, because we are getting what
we deserve for what we did; but he has done no wrong.” And he said to Jesus,
“Remember me, Jesus when you come as King!”

Jesus said to him, “I promise you that today you will be in paradise with me.”

Reflection:
Jesus stands out as the great sign of hope to the world. The whole of creation was in
a state of utter helplessness because of a sin. Yet, how beautifully and confidently
Jesus interceded before his Father on behalf of fallen world: “Father forgive them; for
they know not what they do.” To those who are repentant, there is promise of a bright
future – eternal life of joy. This is what the repentant thief received: “This day, you will
be with me in Paradise. “Yes, there is hope, life, and joy for all those who die in God’s
grace. (Pause)

Rosary: The Sorrowful Mysteries
(1) The Agony in the garden:
Jesus submitted to the agony of suffering and death to fulfil the Father’s will and his
one great desire that we might have life through the grace of redemption. In his agony,
Jesus asked his disciples to watch and pray. Let us ask him to help us in our agony –
of fear, sadness, frustration, and helplessness.

(2) The Scourging at the pillar:
Being tied to the pillar, Jesus’ movements were restricted. He took upon himself the
loss of freedom we brought upon ourselves through sin. He patiently underwent insult,
mockery, and ridicule to set us free from the shame of sin. Let us pray for patience in
our moments of suffering, pain, and loss.

(3) The Crowning with thorns:
The soldiers made fun of Jesus as a king. The crown of thorns hurt him badly. He bled.
Yet he shone out as a King of love, a King who humbled himself to set us free from
the slavery of sin. Let us pray that we may learn to offer humble service to one another,
especially those in need in our community.

(4) The Carrying of the cross:
It was Jesus’ journey to death; he had to carry upon his shoulders the very instrument
of his death. He has told us that the way of the cross is inevitable if we want to possess
life. Let us present to the Lord all the sufferings and crosses our departed
brother/sister… endured in life.

(5) The Crucifixion:
Jesus had to be lifted in order to obtain freedom of eternal life for us: as Moses lifted
up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up. The Cross – the
instrument of condemnation – has become the symbol of life and victory. May Christian
faith, hope and love always to be reflected in our lives.

(1) The Agony in the Garden
It was a very trying period in the life of Jesus. He felt terribly isolated: his disciples were
sleeping; his father seemed to be silent. Jesus felt the horror ad weight of sin and
suffering. Yet he was prepared to face all situations. He submitted to his Father’s love
for the world. Let us offer our departed brother//sister…back into the embrace of God’s
love.

(3) The Crowning with Thorns
Jesus had to undergo insults and mockery. The world made fun of him as a King. He
was indeed God who left the majesty of heaven, became a man, and suffered for the
sake of our redemption. Let us pray that we may not be discouraged in the face of the
thorns of pain, disappointment, or even loss of our dear ones. Jesus, the King of love,
reigns; so too all those who live and die in his love.

(5) Jesus dies on the Cross
Jesus beautifully submitted himself to the Father: “into your hands I commend my

(2) The Ascension
Jesus was rewarded and glorified by the Father for his victory over Satan and sin. The

he/she may celebrate the joy of heaven.

happy to proclaim her “Blessed”. We thank and praise God for the faith of our
