North West Coastal Religion
By Noah Smith
This is a totem pole.
SPIRITS OR SPIRIT QUEST
This is a picture of a spirit. This is a picture of a boy This is a picture of a forest
When a boy was twelve, he left his family to go on a
Spirit Quest. The purpose of a spirit quest was to find
a Spirit to help you for your whole life. The boy would
go in the forest and wouldn’‛t eat for days. Then …
BOOM! The Spirit comes and tells you if you are to be
a boat carver or totem pole maker. If the spirit didn’‛t
come you would have to keep on trying it might take
years for it to come. The Spirits hated fear. If the
Spirit didn’‛t come your family would be ashamed.
Babyland
Babyland was a place where babies lived before they
were born. The babies had their own language but when
they got older they forgot about it.If the baby cried a
lot that meant that the baby didn’‛t like his/her parents
fighting a lot. Then the parents would take the baby to
a medicine women. The women could understand the
baby's language.
WO U LD Y O U G E T T O C A R VE A TOTEM POLE?
The Northwest Coastal Indians were good at carving
totem poles. It took about 10 years to make and carve
a totem pole. Plus, the Northwest Coastal Indians made
their own natural colors like black, red, blue, green, white
and brown and they made them out of clamshells and
salmon eggs. You wonder how they made their own
paintbrushes? They used porcupine needles as their
paintbrushes! Also, they used the totem poles to honor
the dead. The totem poles were 80 feet high. You also
used it to tell stories. The totem poles were also
history.
WERE POTLATCHES IMPORTANT?
A potlatch was a big party that the Northwest Indians
had to celebrate important times like births and
weddings. The word potlatch means ‘’‛To give away’‛’‛
because the host gave the people presents at the end
of the party. You had to be pretty wealthy to throw a
party. The more important you were, the bigger the
present was. The Northwest tribe loved big parties like
this.
WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY OF THE YEAR?
The most important day of the year was when the salmon came back to
the river. The Northwest Coastal Indians thought that the salmon was a
person not really a fish. The Northwest Coastal Indians celebrated the
first fish they caught, the chief would catch the first fish, then they
roasted it then ate it. Then after you ate the first fish now you were
able to go fishing.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IN THE WINTER?
The North West Indians did a special dance in the
winter. Also they told stories around the fire. Some
dances are full of magic tricks like they would cut off
your head. Each of these dances represents a Monster
Spirit. Like the Kwakiutl spirit it would eat lots of birds
or even capture hunters. Some hunters would survive
the Kwakiutl bird and tell the other villagers what
happened.

Resources
The N.W. coastal indians were known as the show
off’s.They would throw really big party’s ( called
potlatches) and give away all their stuff to all the people
that came to the party and the people that threw the party
would very high in the community. The more the Indian
gave away the more important the indian was to the tribe.
Also, the more the Indian was rich, the more the Indian
was important and respected by the tribe. The Indians
made HUGE canoes. T hey used the Cedar trees that they
had all around them. The canoes were about 20ft long!
Before they striped bark off the trees they sang a song or
prayer to the tree. They had houses 50ft high! That’s
HUGE isn’t it.The Northwest was the richest tribe of all
that’s why the Northwest Coastal tribe is called the
showoffs. They would use candlefish to light their houses
by putting a spindle in the candelfishe’s mouth and set it
on fire.
Here is a Northwest coastal home. ↑
They also went whale hunting!
The N.W. indians used traps and spears to hunt.
The NorthWest Coastal
Indians aka The Showoffs
(Politics)
by:Jonathan Goncalves

The N.W. Coastal
Indians were known as the showoffs
because the tribe would show off all
their valuable collections to the other
tribes. The Indians were HUGE partiers.
The more the indians gave away the more
important the
indian was.
Here is a picture of a
Potlatch
Slaves
Another thing,the indians
had were slaves. If you were
caught in s lavery chances you
wouldn’t be able to see you
family again. You would have
to do all the hard work and
even sleep in the same house as
the family that owned
you. Also, if you were
a grown boy you
would paddle your
owner’s war canoe
and fight in wars.
Here is a picture of the N.W Coastal slaves standing outside of
a N.W. coastal home.
here

trade
The Fur Trade
The Indians did get rich from
the fur trade. In fact, The
Showoffs were skilled
traders. Their totem poles
were more detailed. Many
villages spend time hunting.
The fur trade also changed
how the indians looked and
worked.
European Explorers
European Explorers wanted to
help the N.W. Coastal Indians by
putting them in the fur trade. The fur
trade helped Them in a special
way.N.W. Coastal Indians can use sea
otter skin to buy stuff from other
countries instead of using
wampum.European Explorers sailed to
the N.W. in 1777. Only a few European
Explorers have explorers

explorers.
the Settlers
The settlers brought 4 different
kinds of diseases ; such as S mallpox
measles influenza and Malaria.
now because of this most of the
Indians did not survive. Only 1 out
of 5 tribes survived in the The
Northwest coast
also lost most of
their land such as
fishing grounds and
hunting grounds
Now because of this
the Indians old
traditions
disappeared. here is a

coastal chiefs.
The N.W. Coastal Indians Social
Structure

Farming
The N.W. Indians NEVER f armed. They believed that with
all the salmon they had and the berries they picked
that they did not need to farm. So the woman always
gathered while the man fished. And they LOVED their
fish so much because they used the fish for almost
everything and smoked fish, fish oil and they used the
fish for candles too. They even had fish oil for
dessert. They especially loved the Eulachon fish.
This is a N.W. Indian man in
a chilkat blanket.
These are some of the fish This is some of the berries
they ate. they ate.
Would You go to School
The N.W. indians didn’t go to school because they didn’t have
a school. They didn’t have schools but they did learn. They
would learn by watching other people do things and you had
to use your memory. They had no written language. T he boys
learned to fish, cut down trees and carve totem poles at an
early age. And if your special talent was Whale hunting you
would have a teacher. The girls learned to cook, smoke fish,
make clothes, baskets, take care of the house, make fish oil,
handle canoes and swim.
This is one of the baskets. These are some N.W. indians.
Your House
You had a HUGE house. You lived with your entire family
including : your mom, dad, brother, sister, cousin, aunt, uncle,
grandma and grandpa. Most houses had a chief (probably
your dad) and the chief had his private room. the chief was
the most important person in your house. Inside the house
you had beds attached to the wall and baskets under the
beds to store things. And you had painting on the walls plus
the house that had a chief had a totem pole as the door to
the house. T he N.W. indians loved their totem poles.
This is one of the chiefs This is a pic of the outside of
houses with relatives. the chief's house.
The most Valuable thing you could
own.
The Most valuable thing you could own is a Chilkat
blanket. The chilkat blankets were woven by women.
First they started with a pattern on a wood block then
they printed that pattern on the fabric by just looking
at the picture on the block and printing it they that
they u sed for the blanket and after that they were
finished. Also another valuable thing would be a copper
shield. The chief would have a
copper shield, just the chief. The
chief was very important.
This is one of the blankets.
Why Did Babies Have Flat
FOreheads
The N.W. indians thought that flat heads were
beautiful. So when the indians were babies (since when
you are a baby your bones were actually a flexy but a
little bit hard substance called cartallige) they put pads
on your head to shape your head. And after that you
always had a flat head for the rest of your life. It was
kind of their style.
This is a baby with pads on.
