Bournemouth

Ska

FFN Productions: Contact Joan [email protected] - 678-467-7446

BACKGROUND

Bournemouth Club and Baths
Bournemouth Gardens, Kingston, Jamaica
The period film, Bournemouth Ska set in 1960s Jamaica, archives impressions of a musical
evolution, and preserves a select discography of the era. The film contextualizes that period
within rivaling love stories. The first love story is fictitious, an elevating, pulsating romance which
drives the narrative of the movie. The second love story is an intense, dark, and disturbing,
romantic tragedy, based on the disastrous love affair and true story of acclaimed trombonist Don
Drummond and the rebellious Margarita Mahfood, an upper-class maiden turned exotic dancer,
considered to have fallen from grace by her family.
Although Bournemouth burned to the ground in 1939, it was the center of a unique musical
formation. The weekend dance shows staged there are legendary. The film visualizes the
brilliance of a school of foundation musicians and sound systems operators/studio producers like
Coxsone at Studio One, Duke Reid at Treasure Isle, and Prince Buster’s Voice of the People,
featuring their competing dancehall clashes from the 1960s in downtown Kingston.
The film stages re-enactments of musical performances highlighting The Skatalites resident band
and Ska era entertainers like Stranger Cole, Derrick Morgan, Toots and the Maytals, Jimmy Cliff,
Theophilus Beckford, and also artists like Eric Morris, Millie Small, Laurel Aitken, and Prince
Buster and other migrant entertainers who spread the music from Jamaica to the U.K. on the Blue
Beat label.
Today the Ska beat is foundational to all new genres of Jamaican music. It lives at the based of
all subsequent musical evolutions through Rock Steady, through Reggae, and through today’s
Dancehall, mainly with tempo and baseline changes. Ska has seen immense success in
adaptations and interpretations world beats globally, since the 1970s.

BOURNEMOUTH SKA

LOGLINE: Bournemouth Ska is a period film based on events in Jamaica’s dynamic
musical 1960s. Mixed reactions to radical social changes in the newly post colonial
nation, nurture and spiral two tumultuous love stories: one glorious, one tragic, which
are set to the jaunting tempo of the Ska beat, and re-stagings of legendary
performances at the iconic swim and dance Club Bournemouth in Kingston Harbor.

ACT 1
PLOT ONE
1957 - A young DON DRUMMOND crouches in the road, staring at his image in water sitting in a
large pothole on a Kingston Street. We see him from behind, an old hat perched low on the back
of his head, his face is revealed in the puddle. Bullies attack Don from behind. A confrontation
with the bullies lands him in a school for wayward boys

PLOT TWO
1962 - The Independence ceremony and celebrations are in full swing. Princess Margaret and
Lord Snowdon, representing Queen Elizabeth II hand over the government government of
Jamaica to Alexander Bustamante. People island-wide gather around radios. In Kingston, the
Union Jack is lowered and the Jamaican Flag is hoisted to loud cheers. In every town and village
there is an outburst of music and dancing in the streets.

1963 - Spiraling headlines in the Jamaican Daily Gleaner: "Restricted: Jamaicans Protest, No
Access to Hotels, Private Clubs, "Discrimination, Jamaica's Dirty Little Secret" Exclusive Resorts
and Hotels Close Doors to the Rank and File" "Are We Independent?" "Are We Sovereign?" Are
We Equal?"

At Bournemouth things are changing a year after Independence. The owner wants to integrate
the club, he builds a cinema on the grounds, but accustomed to exclusive isolation, club
members resist. The private patrons leave as the grounds fill up with locals, and the business
fails. Lindsay donates the club to the City of Kingston. The impressive facility becomes a thriving
community center. The Skatalites are the resident band at Bournemouth,
1964 - KEMORINE GREY sits in bewildered distress on a country bus traveling from Spanish
Town into Kingston. In flashback, her mind recounts the events of the Independence anniversary
celebrations of the past week, when she attended a private party with her beau, TREVOR
WRAY. Sitting two seats behind her TERRENCE FOSTER) is quite taken with the girl in front of
him on the opposite aisle. Who is this lady? As they disembark, he tries to get her attention, but
fails. He is forced to watch her walk away.
Terrence steps into the street at Parade, the Kingston city center terminus and goes to have
lunch before making his way to Studio One for a practice session. Leaving the studio hours later,
some of the band members go to a downtown dancehall session at Chocomo Lawn.
PLOT ONE
1964 - Don goes off on his own up into Warika Hills to the Rasta camp to sit in on a
groundation session. He hangs out in the background, as usual. But tonight he sees a vision
moving sensuously to the music: a woman singing and dancing in the gathering. She is different,
electric, seductive: unlike the poised, low-profile Rastafarian women. He waits, impatiently to
meet her at the end of the session. They make a connection.

ACT 2

PLOT TWO
Months later, after a late Saturday gig, at his mothers urging, TERRENCE rises early to attend
church on Sunday morning. He sleepy gaze spots his mystery lady singing in the choir. He
convinces her to go for lunch with him along the beach. They stop at Bournemouth. VIVIENNE
SHANNON, Terence’s ex, comes over to get a closer look at the woman is he comes in with.

PLOT ONE
People on the island revere Don as a top-rated musical innovator, but few know of his struggle
with mental problems. Margarita is a beacon of liberation, living ahead of her time. She is an
enigma among Jamaican women, having liberated herself from over-bearing men - her controlling
Lebanese-Jamaican father who abused her mother and forced his kids to work in a dreary
middle-class family business, and from an abusive husband, a professional boxer who frequently
practiced his punches on her.

She escaped into exotic dancing, a career that afforded her freedom and independence. It was a
lifestyle scorned by women of her class. As their relationship grows, and Don attends Margarita's
shows, he becomes jealous and angered by the growls, whistles, and comments from men at her
performances. He wants her to stop dancing. She adamantly refuses. Artistically compatible in
every other way, this is the one bone of contention that threatens their relationship.

ACT 3
PLOT TWO
New Year’s Eve day TREVOR lures KEMO to the beach, ”to talk.” But he engulfs in his
arms, and kisses her deeply when he sees TERRENCE coming toward them. Urged by
VIVIENNE, TERRENCE goes in search of KEMORINE, and he sees the embrace. KEMORINE
struggles to free herself, and turns from TREVOR to see TERRENCE staring at them. He walks
away when KEMO calls out to him.

On the beach are KEMORINE and TERRENCE, TREVOR, and VIVIENNE, watching the
outcome of the events they in motion, and also HILLARY, who TREVOR left in his parked car.
She gets out and walks along the beach. TERRENCE walks past her into the club, his hopes for
New Years Eve proposal to KEMORINE shattered. A musical interlude captures all of their
emotions.

PLOT ONE
As tension builds in their relationship and DONs mania spirals, he forbids Margarita to dance the
New Years Eve shows at the clubs. So she drugs him with a triple dose of his medicine and
leaves for her gigs, hoping that he will sleep until she gets back. But Don wakes up in a drugged
stupor to a dark empty room and has a panic attack. When Margarita creeps into the room in the
wee hours of the morning he is emotionally deranged, and he attacks her.
New Years Eve night is a disaster for KEMORINE and TERRENCE at Bournemouth also. He
avoids VIVIENNE and when KEMORINE tries to talk to him, but he ignores her, preferring to hug
one drink after another drink at the bar all night. TOMMY asks TERRENCE about MARGARITA
and DON, noticing their absence from the party. Thinking they probably did not have a ride,
TERRENCE tells TOMMY he will go pick them up. Things do not work out well for DON and
MARGARITA.
PLOT 1 - Final Scene: Mysterious dark figures enter Don’s mental hospital room AND smother
him. (Popular legend has it that the wealthy Mahfoods (Margarita’s family) sent people to
Bellevue to avenge her death).
PLOT 2 - Final Scene - A Church Wedding and a Reception At Bournemouth ends with the
song, Ska, Ska, Ska, Jamaica Ska.
