General Information & Sale Notes

ARRIVAL All sheep must arrive in the market between the hours of
8.00am and 9.30am on the day of the sale.

IDENTIFICATION All sheep must have been identified with their individual BCSS
identification in accordance with current BCSS rules. All sheep must also have a tag
with their UK holding number.

INSPECTION All sheep will be inspected by the Society's Official Inspector before
being allowed forward for sale. All sheep must have been paint branded with their lot
number prior to arrival at the market.

BIOSECURITY Intending purchasers are requested to have livestock vehicles cleansed
and disinfected.

LICENCES Vendors are responsible for obtaining their movement licences prior to the
sale. The Market Holding Number is 48 832 0024

MAEDI VISNA All vendors must ensure that a fully completed MV certificate
accompanies their sheep to the sale.

METHOD OF SALE All sheep will be sold in guineas.

CONDITIONS OF SALE All sheep will be sold subject to the Conditions of Sale of the
British Charollais Sheep Society and to the Auctioneer's General Conditions of Sale,
which are available in the Auctioneer's office.

PEDIGREE CERTIFICATES Pedigree certificates relating to the sale will be available
from the Auctioneer's office on the day of the sale. See note below with regard to
Notified Males.

PEDIGREE STATUS FOR MALES Would purchasers please note that there are two
different status of registration for Charollais rams, Full Pedigree and Birth Notified. All
Full Pedigree rams are marked as such in the catalogue and have been upgraded by
the breeder, all other rams have Notified status only. No Pedigree Certificates are
issued for Notified rams and these rams are not eligible for use within a pedigree flock
until they are upgraded to Full Pedigree status. If Full Pedigree status is required then
a fee of £20.00 plus VAT is payable to the Society.

SCRAPIE GENOTYPE RESULTS The Scrapie Genotype results listed in this catalogue
are guaranteed to be correct by the person whose name appears as the Vendor in the
catalogue. Whilst the Society will make all possible effort to provide purchasers with
the correct information, they can in no way be held responsible for any error or
ommission of information. Vendors are responsible for passing Genotype Certificates
on to purchasers.

EBV A brief explanation

Eight week The breeding potential for lamb growth rates from
weight birth to 8 weeks of age.
Scan weight The breeding potential for lamb growth rates to 21
Muscle depth weeks (age at scanning).
Choosing animals with high muscle depth EBVs
Fat depth will increase lamb muscularity and hence the lean
meat content of the carcase.
Gigot Negative values indicate animals with lower fat
content which will produce leaner carcases or which
can be taken to higher weights without becoming
over-fat.
Breeding value highlighting animals with superior
breeding potential for gigot shape.

Terminal Sire Highlights superior breeding stock for a specific
Index breeding objective.

When Will Norton returned to the family farm after university, he and his father Phil sat down
to review the business and plan for the future. Four years on, the Nortons who are based at
Culmington Farm near Ludlow in Shropshire, have been able to both expand and simplify
their sheep enterprise to integrate low cost lamb production with developing arable and
contracting enterprises.

Culmington Farm is now home to 950 Lleyn/Welsh Mule crosses that lamb tightly outside at
grass in the first half of April with minimal labour input. “Five years ago we were struggling
with the sheep enterprise. We were lambing in January to try and capitalise on the early lamb
trade, but feed costs were high and our grass was not coming early enough.” Phil Norton
says.

But a discussion with David Thornton from Rumenco and feed merchant Charlie Prince based
in Ludlow opened the Nortons’ eyes to the potential of a move to a lower input flock
management system. “With David’s help we decided to invest in an ‘easy-care’ type sheep
enterprise and it has allowed us to expand the flock significantly, whilst at the same time
releasing time when we need it to develop our other enterprises,” Will comments.

“We now think Lleyn cross Texel ewes back to a Charollais tup – are the way forward. Last
spring, we managed to lamb 798 ewes at grass within 18 days, with minimal intervention and
zero concentrate input. The lambs are fit and strong too and are generally up on their feet
sucking very quickly.”

To ensure ewes receive the necessary feed supplementation, the Nortons now rely heavily on
Lifeline Lamb & Ewe for its ability to balance what’s missing in the grass for the ewes, and the
extra nutritional benefits it delivers for the unborn lambs. “Lifeline improves ewe vitamin and
mineral status, promotes an easier lambing, and boosts colostrum quality and unborn lamb
nutritional status.” David Thornton points out. “Immunoglobulin content is an important
measure of colostrum quality that infers passive immunity to disease in young lambs. As all
shepherds know, healthier lambs have increased feed intake and growth rate, show improved
early vigour and general health, thrive and are less likely to suffer from conditions such as
coccidiosis, hypothermia and mis-mothering.”

The triple-bearing and yearling ewes gain access to Lifeline feed blocks from six weeks pre-
lambing, which provide some additional protein (18%) in addition to the micro-element
package. This is particularly important for the yearlings as they are still growing and will need
a good milk supply at lambing. Cost works out at around £5.84 per ewe. The lower protein
(12%) bucket-based form of the supplement is fed to the twins from four weeks pre-lambing
and to the singles from two weeks before. Supplementation cost for these two groups
averages out at about £3.57/ewe. No concentrates are fed at all.

“The use of Lifeline has really allowed us to maximise the flock expansion potential of
lambing outside,” Will says. Quite apart from the easier lambing season it seems to promote,
the lambs also seem to get off to a flying start and really take advantage of the spring grass.
