LINE
• Lines enclose and contain the parts of a design by creating outlines. They can
be smooth, rough, continuous, broken, thick or thin.
• Examples: buildings, branches of a tree, a horizon, or a set of train tracks
COLOR
• Color is incredibly important and should never be an afterthought. Even a
design set entirely in grayscale needs to be balanced and contrasted
appropriately.
• Examples: red, blue, green, purple, etc.
SHAPE
• shape is a flat, enclosed area of an artwork created through lines, textures,
colors or an area enclosed.
• example: triangles, squares, circles, etc.
TEXTURE
• Texture is everywhere as we navigate the world around us by both sight and
touch.
• Example: walls, rocks, sand, etc.
PATTERN
• pattern is a kind of pattern formed of geometric shapes and typically
repeated like a wallpaper design.
• Examples: wallpapers, etc.
FORM
• Form can be measured, from top to bottom (height), side to side (width), and
from back to front (depth). Also defined by light and dark.
• Examples: shadows, light peeking through something.
