Evolving ICT for your
Multi Academy Trust
with Computeam

The ICT needs of a Multi Academy Trust have evolved.
When ICT was first introduced to schools around 20 years ago, it tended to be a case of an
ICT suite and a few PCs used to teach a specific subject. The internet soon brought a wealth
of cross-curricular digital resources to bear, classrooms were fitted with exciting interactive
displays and schools became increasingly dependent on technology tools for their day-to-
day operations.
Throughout this period, spending on hardware and software expanded rapidly, peaking in
2014/15:.
“The survey of 1,238 UK schools (731 primaries, 507 secondary’s) which was conducted in
July 2013 found that in the school year 2014/15 schools forecast their ICT expenditure will be
higher in cash terms than at any other time on record.” (BESA article)
However, in real terms budgets are now shrinking, and every school must work harder
to ensure that any investment in ICT delivers a tangible improvement in outcomes. This
challenge is multiplied in a MAT, where seamless collaboration between schools is required to
deliver the improvement expected of trustees and board members.
The starting position for any ICT strategy has got to be what you need to do to engage and
challenge your students, raise attainment, and maximise the efficiency and motivation of
staff. The best use of ICT will help towards these key objectives.

“Technology is just a tool. In terms of
getting the kids working together and
motivating them, the teacher is most
important.”

Bill Gates, Founder of Microsoft

At Computeam our experience has evolved over the past 20 years as we’ve worked with
hundreds of school and academy clients. Our flexible approach means that we can work with
you on an individual academy basis or across the whole MAT at once, sharing best practice
and driving best value.

Together, we will ensure that technology improves your education outcomes.

T IM NICEChief Executive Officer of New Beginnings Multi Academy Trust

Background to Tim

Tim was a successful head at a large secondary school; Tim started his teaching career 17
years ago in the Maths Department. “When I was appointed by the Trustees back in 2015, I
was keen to take on the challenge of building a successful trust, where my knowledge and
experience could be used throughout all our schools to improve children’s education”

How we can help?

Tim is like many CEOs in demanding the best for their Trusts. He realises that ICT can be
a valuable tool for pupils, teachers, parents, and the central team. All decisions, no matter
where they are made, effect the entire trust so joined up thinking is a priority.

One of Computeam’s Key strengths is our breadth of knowledge of Education, as we
currently support over 350 Schools and Academy Trusts across the country.

As a “Turn Key” ICT Solutions provider, we are in a position to help create a single ICT
strategy for your Multi Academy Trust, mapping short, medium, and long term priorities
and making technology a key driver of your MAT’s
Improvement Plan.

SANJIT PAT ELChief Operating Officer of New Beginnings Multi Academy Trust

Background to Sanjit

Before the MAT started Sanjit was Business Manager at New Beginnings Secondary School.
“When the Trust was created, we needed to get our Senior Management structure in place
ASAP. I had a background and experience in managing a large secondary school so I jumped
at the chance to become the COO and lead the day to day operational management of the
trust. Since that time we now have 16 schools ranging from Nursery through to Sixth Form”

How we can help?

With cloud technology growing and users adopting at a rapid pace, Microsoft Office 365
really fits Sanjit’s challenge. The use and integration of SharePoint and One Drive throughout
the Trust will give them the ability to stop duplications, ensure Trust data is secure and
policies are correctly shared to all their academies whilst benefitting from efficiency savings.

Moving 1 or 25 schools onto this platform is no simple task, but we have a proven track record
in delivering Microsoft Office 365 into a wide range of academies and trusts, ensuring that
the platform is fit for purpose but also that user adoption is high.

We have also introduced VOIP telephony systems Next Steps
within other MAT’s to cut the cost of daily telephone
conversations between academies, and to further integrate
communication systems.

Background to Lesley

Lesley came from the Local Authority finance department. “I’d always had a close link to New
Beginnings Secondary School when they were a part of the LA. Keen to use my accountancy
expertise, I relished this new challenge and hope to make a big difference by combining the buying
power of several smaller schools”

How we can help?

As part of our strategic review, we look for ways of generating efficiency gains and cost savings. We
can advise on FMS systems and share best practice from other school clients in this area.
Centralising procurement of contracted IT services such as internet connectivity and voice not only
drives down initial costs, it also helps generate long term savings such as:

• Reduced travel due to the ability to hold high-quality videoconference meetings.
• Free site to site calls and better communication through instant messaging

Good, real time information is another key driver for Lesley in trying to make sense of the complex
finances of 16 different schools. Tools like Microsoft Power BI can help by creating real-time
dashboards that indicate areas of underperformance quickly
and highlight best practice. We can advise on how to
harness these tools and provide training so that your staff
have the ability to develop their own reports in future.

PENNY ROPERNDewirecBteogrinofninQgusalMituylti&AEcadudceamtiyonTrautst

Background to Penny

Penny came from a primary federation where she gave up her classroom to look after
attainment and improvement across three schools. “The challenge for me is scaling up my
knowledge to cover not only individual schools’ requirements, but also the leadership team
of the Trust. The learning without levels agenda has added an extra layer of difficulty to this
task. I need to improve quality and get a uniformed assessment across all sites to ensure that
when OFSTED calls the whole trust has the required information at their fingertips.”

How we can help?

Computeam currently partners with several of the leading education MIS and pupil tracking
software providers. This enables us to present best of breed and value options according to
each MAT’s individual budget & requirement.

The journey starts off with our educational experts Next Steps
assessing which systems the schools within the trust are
currently using and ensuring accuracy and consistency
across levels. We see the project through from suitable
hardware, data transfer and staff training.

Background to Ian

Ian was Network Manager at New Beginnings Secondary for the last ten years. “Managing
a secondary school network certainly has its challenges but now with another 15 sites I
don’t have the capacity to proactively support of all these without compromising on levels
of service. I’m now responsible for far more technology and it is now becoming far more
complex and inter-academy connectivity is required to meet the trust needs and to save
money.”

How we can help?

Being the ICT Manager of a MAT can be a daunting task especially with the increased
demands on technology, and getting involved with a solutions provider could be seen as a
threat to your position.

However, working in partnership and filling the gaps is a Next Steps
key way of working for Computeam. We see ourselves as
part of the team, offering remote monitoring tools and 3rd
line escalation for emergencies, while filling in gaps in your
team’s skill-set.

We can help to reduce capital costs using our innovative Request your free whole site 7
