Chocolate is one of the world’s most well loved indulgences, synonymous with pleasure, but it is also a very exploitative industry that causes much harm to its traditional cacao growers and the planet. For 500 years the story of chocolate has mirrored humanity’s own story of conquests, oppression, geo-political trade and industrialisation of food. The story of chocolate is also entwined with that of capitalism, with huge profits being made by western corporations on the back of mostly non-western workers and the true costs unaccounted for.
The Queens of Chocolate is a character- driven documentary series led by women on a mission to change the world. It takes our viewers on a delectable, visually sumptuous, heart-warming, and at times heart-breaking, journey of discovery as we traverse the globe seeking the best bittersweet stories that challenge the status quo and present solutions to global problems.
