Lake Okeechobee, known as Florida's Inland Sea, is the largest freshwater lake in
the state of Florida. It is the tenth largest natural freshwater lake in the United States
and the second largest natural freshwater lake (the largest being Lake Michigan)
contained entirely within the contiguous United States. Okeechobee is approximately
half the size of the state of Rhode Island, and is exceptionally shallow for a lake of its
size, with an average depth of only about 9 feet. The lake is divided between Glades,
Okeechobee, Martin, Palm Beach, and Hendry counties. All five counties meet at one
point near the center of the lake.
The area is historically known for its agriculture, but recently has grown in the
fishing, boating, trails and recreational areas. The lake is contained by the Herbert
Hoover Dike, which was built in 1928. There are waterways on either side that run into
one lake, called the “Big O”, making it part of the 152-mile boating passage that runs
through the state known as the Okeechobee Waterway. The area around the dike and
waterways provide rich soil which helps the area prosper in fresh crops and produce.
The Lake Okeechobee Area has many fun things to learn and explore, whether your
looking to recloate or just take a nice trip.
