Combined Sounds
To make combined sounds, always use the や、ゆ、よ in combination with an い sound
of any of the hiragana. The initial sound is written as a standard size symbol,
while the や、ゆ、よ are written smaller, half size. When written in romaji, the
sounds of the initial sound and the ya, yu, yo sound combined. For example: ki +
ya becomes kya (き+や→きゃ).
kya きゃ きゃ gya ぎゃ ぎゃ

Small Tsu
The small つ changes the way we say a word. Instead of being even on every
syllable, there is a small jump in the word. When it is written, the small つ
doubles the next letter – always a consonant. For example; yokatta is written よか
った and ほっぺ is written hoppe.
The small つ is written half the size of a standard character, the same way the や、
ゆ、よ appearin combined sounds. Remember to write it smaller than usual, so that
it is not mistaken for a normal つ.
