Tarot members were pitted against each other in a bloody battle
at the Wolves Den Pier! Vicious fights ensued and no one was
spared from the carnage. Friends, lovers and lalafell fought tooth
and nail for glory and a chance to win an albino karakul mount.
Between rounds, raffles were held for minions and a purse
containing 1 million gil kindly donated by Big Beb. Though Thane
Shieldheart and Midnight Rose fought valiantly, reaching third
and second places respectively, they were ultimately unable to
match our top 100 Crystal Conflict PvPer Dera Boldmane who
claimed final victory.

MOTIVATION

It’s always good to have goals. Goals are what drive you to do the things

you may not want to do, and may set you apart from the rest who

maybe don’t want it as much.

What do you dream of having in FFXIV? A large shiro plot with a private

beach? A Gilded Mikoshi? A massive line of credit with Papi Chai? The

ability to share your in game wealth with your friends? Do you just enjoy

trying to understand markets and using that to leverage market shifts?

There is no single correct reason for why people make gil. Even having

no desire to make gil is perfectly normal. I don’t pay your sub and

neither does anyone else, so play the game in a way you enjoy! But if you

want to make a lil gil on the side then I hope I can give you some tips on

how to get there!

ALL THE SMALL THINGS
There are small things you can do every day that can help you start
accumulating a small fortune. I’ll list the small things I do on a daily basis
to try to make a little bit of easy gil below.

Retainers are pay to win (if you want buy more)
Retainers can make you a lot of passive income. It is completely RNG, but
sometimes you can hit a small jackpot and the by-product can make you
even more gil!
Retainers can be unlocked by speaking with a Retainer Vocate in any of the
3 major starting cities after completing the quest "An Ill-conceived
Venture".
When you’re at home and playing it's best to send your retainers out on
Quick Explorations. These retainer adventures will more often than not
give you a piece of armor or a weapon (don’t worry, we can make gil from
that) but sometimes, sometimes your comrade will bring you back a whole
freaking roof that sells for nothing! Don’t fret: it’s a numbers game and
Yoshi P loves his RNG.
There is mixed information online but if you get your retainer to max level
and give them some semi decent gear (560 item levelish). Don’t forget your
retainers will be bringing you back a lot of armor and weapons they can
gear themselves, too. With a geared retainer you can unlock the true RNG:
venture coffers!
Venture coffers are RNG on RNG, but every now and then you will get two
extremely valuable Pure White or Jet Black dyes, these dyes sell for a lot! As
of writing a single pure white sells for 240,000 gil and a jet black sells for
348,000 gil meaning hitting this could net you 480,000 or 696,000 gil!

Thanks, now my bags are full of armor!
No, your bags are full of seals! Now head to your Grand company and talk
to the Personnel Officer to exchange the gear for seals! Don’t forget if your
retainers/alt jobs are lacking gear check if they can use any of these items
before you melt them.
Early on you will want to spend your seals on more Ventures as you will be
using a lot of them running quick explorations. You will make more seals
than you use which means we can try to make some gil!
The end goal here is to try to unlock the highest rank so you can buy
Materiel Containers 3.0 and 4.0. These contain minions most of the time
but you can get mounts that sell for a lot.
If you aren’t max rank with your company yet then you should try to.
Squats are the best emote in the game! There are some other items you
can buy at lower grand company ranks to try to make some gil. Glass Fiber,
Quick-hardening Sealant, and Petrified Logs are good examples. These
items might not always make money selling on the market board but they
have a hidden value: they're used in crafting recipes that are in high
demand.. Can you make these items? Why not use a couple of those
Petrified Logs and make an Oriental Striking Dummy? Those cheap logs go
into making an item worth 140k gil!
If you see an item and wonder what it’s used for just right click on the item
and select the 'Search Recipes Using This Material' option.

My Bags are clear but I have a spare 20 minutes, what should I do?
MAPPU, but not like you know it! Personally, I do a map every day. It’s part
of my morning coffee ritual. But don’t go and buy a map. Do you have a
gatherer at level 50? If not… yeah you can go buy a map but it's a gamba so
it’s up to you. If you do have a gatherer... then let's go get a map!
I tend to run Leather maps or Boarskin maps because these can drop Lotus
leaves and Mariner cloth respectively. I’ve probably made over 20 million gil
in these 2 items alone and I still have 6 lotus leaves in my bags. There is no
reason you can’t look online and see what the other maps drop and if they
are worth doing as well!
But the guideline here is to do a map every day. You can gather one per
day (I think its 16 hours, technically). It won’t take much time and you might
make a bit of gil and there is also an entry in the challenge log for maps.

KINGS OF THE WEEKEND
These are the more time consuming things I’ll do on the weekend or when
I have more spare time.

They nerfed my sweet coffee biscuits
There, there, it will be okay... Because now we can just burn our levequests
on Tsai tou Vounou or Commanding Craftsman’s Draught. I just hop
servers and buy the cheapest HQ Tsai’s I can find, but if you have the time
and gear you can HQ craft these yourself.
As of writing, Tsai is cheapest on Ravana at 1,418 gil per item, and you will
need to hand in 3 per levequest so the total cost will be 4,254 gil per
levequest. The rewards for handing these in are now random but you will
get just over 9,000 gil on average per hand in basically doubling your
money (if you buy instead of craft) for some semi mindless clicking.

It’s party time!!! Or not if you don’t want to...
One of the biggest markets in the game is housing items, and what better
way to learn all those items than by visiting some of the amazing creations
some skilled people have made in this game! Check the party finder, is
there a new cafe open? Is DJ 420 spinning the sickest beats to a bunch of
cat girls? Is there a shady massage parlor open? Actually, don’t go to the
massage parlor, but the others are good!
Go to these places and see what catches your eye. Chances are other
people think it looks good too and they’ll want to make something like it in
their own house! See if those items are selling for a lot, or if they even sell
at all (Universalis is your friend).
Learning what items people like and use a lot of can help you get in on a
market and start making some serious gil. Hingan bookshelves… I had
about 40 of those sunk into the floor of my old house. I also love the
lighting windows, and those windows need blinds! And we need flowers!
You get the idea
Of course if you don’t want to go into a sweaty den of desperate cat girls
or be asked how your coffee was you can always have a look at what
people are making online. Housing Snap is a great resource for inspiration
and sometimes they’ll list the items they used. If you're not sure what
items were used in a build, you can ask around and someone will know
what that weird sunk item is.

But Beb, crafting is for nerds
Crafting is for nerds? No, this is for the real nerds…

Arby who? Isn’t that a US fast food place?!
Arbitrage… Arbitrage can make you a lot of gil but it has its downsides: it
takes time and capital and you can lose that capital quickly if you don’t
know your market.
“In economics and finance, arbitrage is the practice of taking advantage of
a difference in prices in two or more markets; striking a combination of
matching deals to capitalise on the difference, the profit being the
difference between the market prices at which the unit is traded.”
Whilst not being true arbitrage (you can if you want to have alts on
different servers doing the same thing) you can use this method to check
an item's price on different servers and what they sell for on yours. Can
you possibly make a quick buck?
I used this method a lot back when there were no oceanic servers, I even
wrote a small application to check the last 200 sold items via the
universalis API. Check if I could buy it cheap on another server and sell it
for a minimum 30% profit on Kujata. But you don’t need to know coding to
use this method. With just a few minutes of looking, I can see that
moonfire hats are selling for 214,000 gil on Ravana but I can buy one for
37,000 on Sephirot. Is this a popular item? Universalis tells me 1 sold on
11/12, 2 sold on 8/12 but interestingly someone actually paid 215,000 for
one on the 8th. This item would be a gamble but it's not a huge outlay. In
the worst case scenario you have a new hat or a gift for someone.
Arbitrage is difficult and sometimes time consuming and I wouldn’t
recommend it unless you know your market and are willing to possibly
lose the money you invest. But people are lazy and will pay more for an
item on their home server than go to another server (or they just have a
lot of gil and don’t care, in which case why shouldn’t you get their excess
gil?)

CONCLUSION
Making gil can be fun, it can be time consuming,
it can be a grind. At the end of the day don’t
make it a job. Just enjoy your time in the game
how you see fit, but hopefully one or more of
these methods can help you start building a little
extra gil to give to Tea.

COMING FEBRUARY 2023

DEAR SCHOLAR
HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE

Ah, Starlight season. Twinkling lights, drinking tea in front of
roaring fires and, of course, presents. Tis the season of giving
and there’s no better feeling than watching the joy on
someone’s face as they unwrap that special gift chosen just for
them... Until you see the anticipation turn to forced politeness
as they unwrap yet another pair of festive-themed socks. Fear
not intrepid readers, for I am here to save you from this fate
with my genius gift ideas for those hard-to-buy-for classes.
Oh, and if you want to get me a little something in appreciation,
apparently I need a calendar because I do seem to have this
terrible habit of losing track of time.

HAPPY GIFTING, EVERYONE!

For the Melee:

Dragoons: A nice pillow and blanket so they can be
comfortable while floor-tanking.
Monks: A nerf gun, because it’s gotta be a better
ranged attack than what they already have right?
Reapers: a pre-distressed leather coat.

For the Ranged:

Bards: A new manager cos clearly they’re not getting
the hype they deserve.
Machinists: Actually these guys are easy, if it goes
‘boom’ they’ll probably love it.
Dancers: A personal mixtape, but be sure to call it
something catchy like “Songs that Slay, while Slaying.”

For the Spellcasters:

Red Mages: A voucher for therapy to help them with
their inability to make decisions.
Black Mages: A personal tank to eat damage so they
don’t need to move out of their leylines.
Summoners: A full set of the HP Lovecraft collection
so they can put the ‘edge’ in egi.

For the tanks:

Paladins: Polish so their armour can gleam
bright enough to match their self-righteousness
Gunbreakers: A nice helmet to help reduce ‘shot self in
face’ incidents.
Warrior: A nice new stress ball – so they don’t use the
DPS as a substitute.

For the healers:

Scholars: A nice bottle of wine to drink and a book to
read while their faerie does all the work.
Astrologians: A nice album to display all those cards
they never give out.
White Mage: A spa day to de-stress from all the wall-to-
wall pulls.

For the crafters
& gatherers:

Also as a bonus idea, if your friend is a crafter then a technical
manual or rare recipe book never goes astray. If they like
collecting weird rocks and plants, a jumbo-sized suitcase would
be right up their alley.
