Our latest manufacturing process utilizes many advantageous technologies developed at Benz R&D: a patented
ultra stable hydrophobic material, an advanced molding process, a patented milling and machining specific
mandrel, patented optical blocking and high level automation. The result is a cost effective, high yield
Hydrophobic IOL manufacturing process that completely eliminates traditional Cyro mandrels and vortex
cooling, giving you a high quality IOL from raw material in just a few minutes. Growth is enabled by a quality
products and manufacturing scalability. Benz R&D has both.

Preloaded and Steam Sterilized
The ultra stable HF-1.2 lens can be steam sterilized with no impact on glistenings. The lens is conveniently
preloaded into a Medicel 2.2 steam sterilizable injector and sterilized for same day manufacturing, packaging
and sterilization. The Benz Hydrophobic Manufacturing Platform gives you both high yield and just in time
manufacturing.

HF-1.2
The most cost effective hydrophobic IOL Material
CE marked hydrophobic IOLs are currently available in Benz HF-1.2 material in many markets worldwide.
HF-1.2 has been in eyes for over seven years with zero glistenings and excellent patient outcomes. HF-1.2 is
the first dry preloadable hydrophobic lens that is steam sterilizable and also accommodates standard ETO
methods. HF-1.2 has very low chromatic aberration, with an Abbey Number of 48. Available in 2.0mm Blanks
as well as and Universal Blanks and Finished Optic Blanks for highly cost effective manufacturing.
Dry pre-loaded HF-1.2 lenses can be conveniently delivered using a Steam Sterilizable Medicel 2.2 injector,
with an opening time of 25 seconds at 21ºC.
Produced in Natural Yellow™ and UVX™ clear. Natural Yellow™ is our patented natural UV absorbing and violet
light filtering chromophore covalently bonded to the polymer backbone. UVX™ is our patented Stability UV
absorber that provides excellent UV-A protection in a clear IOL.

The Next Generation Hydrophobic IOL Material
HF-3 is a unique, moderately high refractive index hydrophobic acrylic polymer with many advantageous
characteristics. A refractive index (1.505) combined with unique mechanical properties give HF-3 lenses
MICS capability. Chromatic aberration is superior because HF-3 has an Abbe number of 47, the same as the
human crystalline lens. HF-3 Natural Yellow gives the patient the same color transmission and UV protection
as a young human lens, therefore no color perception or scotopic vision surprises after surgery. HF-3 lenses
are convenient to use as well, because they do not need to be packed in water to achieve their zero glistening
value. The convenience of a dry preloaded lens and micro injection can be yours with HF-3 material.
The opening time of HF-3 at 21°C is 10 seconds, allowing for fast and efficient surgeries. HF-3 is tomorrow’s
lens material available today.

HR
The Next Generation Hydrophilic IOL Material Designed for Submicro Injection
HR is a unique hydrophilic material with moderately high refractive index and superior mechanical properties
that enable very small incision surgeries while maintaining full size optics. Injector size as low as 1.5mm can
be accommodated with Benz HR material. Alternatively, very large optic diameters or special large volume
haptic designs can be accommodated with injector sizes as low as 1.8mm. HR is available as a 2.0mm x 12.7mm
blank and as a Universal Blank shown below. Available in Natural Yellow and Clear UVX.

The First Hydrophilic Micro Injection IOL Material
IOL25 is a patented hydrophilic acrylic polymer, particularly well suited for micro injection. In fact, IOL25 based
lenses were the first to achieve widespread MICS compatibility. The raw material monomers used to produce
IOL25 are also produced by Benz Research and Development using a unique process that produces ultra pure
monomer. Benz maintains complete control of its IOL material quality by producing its own monomers to its
own ultra pure specifications. Raw material purity is essential for long term reliability of hydrophilic IOL materials.
Polymer purity, consistency and reliability, these are the characteristics of Benz IOL Materials.
IOL25 is available in Natural Yellow™, and clear UVX™. Natural Yellow™ is our patented natural UV-A absorbing
and violet light filtering chromophore covalently bonded to the polymer backbone. UVX™ is our Extreme Stability
clear UV absorber that provides excellent UV-A protection. The transmission characteristics of IOL25 Natural

Natural Yellow™
Natural UV Protection
Benz Research and Development is the first and only company to incorporate the same UVA and violet light
absorbing chromophore found in every human crystalline lens into its IOL materials. Our approach to protecting
the retina from harmful energetic light is to use nature’s own chromophore in order to provide your patients the
same protection and visual experience they had at 20 years old.
The absorption spectrum of 3-Hydroxykynurenine shows that the natural compound is an excellent UV-A
absorber with a secondary purpose of filtering violet light. This compound and its beta Glucoside derivative
are the sole protection for UV-A and violet light in the natural human lens. We have made a special monomer
(U.S. Patent 7,947,796) containing this naturally occurring chromophore and covalently incorporated it into our
premier IOL materials to give you an IOL material with young human lens characteristics.

Benz Finished Optics Blanks provide high quality optical surfaces with high MTF, precise power, and low
standard deviations. Covering a full range of designs from single vision aspheric to toric multifocal, Benz
Finished Optics consistently deliver the highest levels of performance.
Currently, more than half of all IOLs implanted worldwide have molded optics. Over the last several years
Benz has made very significant progress in ultra-precision optical insert fabrication and we have applied this
capability to an advanced injection molding process to produce molds for making Universal Blanks with optics
that rival the very best IOL optics produced anywhere in the world.
Using a proprietary cast molding process we have succeeded in closely replicating these optics in our
Universal Blanks. Our precision cast molding capabilities now extend from spheres to aspherics to aspheric
torics as well as proprietary customer optics. These extremely high quality molded optical surfaces are the
foundation for a new flexible manufacturing platform that is advantageous for both High Quality and
Cost of Goods Sold.
