‫תכנית עמיתי ועמיתות עמיות‬

‫רציונל‬
‫ישראל בעשור השמיני שלה הגיעה להישגים מרשימים ברמה בינלאומית וברמה מקומית‪ .‬האוכלוסייה‬
‫בישראל גדלה ונהייתה מגוונת יותר ויותר‪ .‬מערכת היחסים עם הארצות הסובבות אותה השתנתה‬
‫וממשיכה להשתנות ולהתגבש כל הזמן‪ .‬לצד המתרחש בזירה המקומית בתוך ישראל‪ ,‬הקשר של‬
‫העם היושב בציון עם זה בעולם הרחב תמיד היה כמו קשר משפחתי‪ .‬לעתים חם והדוק‪ ,‬לעתים‬

‫מתוך ביקורת ותסכול‪ ,‬חשיבות קיומו של הקשר‪ ,‬כמו משפחה ‪ -‬אינו מוטל בספק‪.‬‬

‫בהשתלמות זו נעמיק בשיח הזהותי שלנו כנשות ואנשי חינוך ונתמקד בשייכות שלנו לעם היהודי‬
‫ובמערכת היחסים בינינו לבין יהדות העולם בדגש על הקהילה היהודית בטורונטו‪ .‬נעסוק בסוגיות‬
‫יסוד בחברה הישראלית ונבחן איך מגמות אלה השפיעו על גיבוש הזהות שלנו וממשיכות להשפיע‬
‫עלינו‪ .‬כיצד הן משפיעות על הקשר שלנו עם יהדות העולם ומה המשמעות של השתייכות לעם‬
‫היהודי כאזרחי ישראל‪ .‬הבנת המורכבות לצד התנסות בפיתוח שיח זהותי‪ ,‬תאפשר בסיס איתן‬

‫להובלת שיח של מורכבות עם מחנכים‪ ,‬תלמידים וקהילות‪.‬‬

‫במסגרת התכנית‪ ,‬צוותי החינוך בישראל ובטורונטו ייחשפו למגוון דעות וטקסטים אודות סוגיות‬
‫מרכזיות בחברה הישראלית‪ ,‬במקביל לרכישת כלים לשימוש בשדה החינוכי בו הם פועלים‪ :‬יצירת‬

‫שיח מורכב‪ ,‬ורב תרבותי פיתוח פעילויות חינוכיות ויצירת תהליכי בירור ערכי‪.‬‬
‫קבוצת המחנכים המובילה תיצור אדוות אשר ישפיעו על החינוך לישראל ועל החינוך אודות הקהילות‬
‫היהודיות בעולם במסגרות החינוכיות בהן הם פועלים‪ .‬עמיתי התוכנית ימשיכו לפעול ולפתח את‬

‫התחום מתוך עבודה ועשייה משותפת במרחב בו הם חיים ופועלים‪.‬‬

‫מטרות התכנית‬
‫‪ .1‬בחינה וברור אישי של כל אחד‪/‬ת מהמשתתפים ביחס לזהותו האישית והיהודית‪ ,‬תחושת השייכות‬

‫לעם היהודי וסוגיות מרכזיות בחברה הישראלית‪.‬‬
‫‪ .2‬הכרות מעמיקה עם סוגיות יסוד בחיים היהודיים בתפוצות‪ ,‬בדגש על הקהילה התאומה בטורונטו‬

‫‪ .3‬פיתוח כלים ליצירת והובלת שיח זהותי מעמיק ומכבד סביב סוגיות מורכבות ורב תרבותיות‪.‬‬
‫‪ .4‬פיתוח תפיסה פדגוגית וחומרי לימוד לתלמידים‪ ,‬המפתחים שיח של זהות ושייכות לעם היהודי‪.‬‬

‫‪ .5‬פיתוח קבוצת עמיתים מקצועית המקדמת את תחום העמיות באילת אילות‪ ,‬לצד פיתוח קשר‬
‫ועבודה משותפת עם קבוצת העמיתים של צוותי החינוך בטורונטו‪.‬‬

‫מבנה התכנית ומרכיביה‬
‫תכנית דו‪-‬שנתית שמטרתה גיבוש קבוצת עמיתות ועמיתים שיקדמו ויעסקו בקידום העמיות במרחב‬

‫אילת‪-‬אילות‪.‬‬
‫התכנית תתנהל במקביל בטורונטו ובמרחב אילת‪-‬אילות על מנת להעמיק את ההבנה וההיכרות בין‬
‫הקהילות השונות‪ ,‬התכנים נבנים סביב ‪ 7‬יחידות תוכן מרכזיות שיתפרסו על פני שנתיים‪ .‬יחידות אלה‬

‫זהות לשתי התכניות והתכנים יותאמו על פי הצורך לכל קבוצת לומדים‪.‬‬
‫• במסגרת המפגשים נעסוק בסוגיות מרכזיות בחיי החברה הישראלית‪ .‬הסוגיות יוצגו על ידי מנחות‬

‫התכנית ומרצים אורחים‪ .‬כל סוגיה תלווה בשיח ולמידה קבוצתית ואישית‪ ,‬יחד עם הכוונה פדגוגית‬
‫לפיתוח תוצרים חינוכיים ליישום בקרב קהל היעד של הצוותים החינוכיים‪.‬‬

‫הפיתוח החינוכי ישלב למידה חדשנית הכוללת יישומים דיגיטליים ומתודות מגוונות‪.‬‬
‫• בכל שנה יתקיימו שני מפגשים משותפים (סינכרונים) לכלל עמיתי התוכנית מטורונטו ומאילת‪.‬‬
‫במהלך השנתיים יתקיימו שתי משלחות‪ /‬סמינרים חינוכיים משותפים (אחד בכל שנה) בני ‪ 8-10‬ימים‪,‬‬
‫כל אחד‪ ,‬באילת‪ -‬אילות ובטורונטו‪ .‬הסמינרים יאפשרו להכיר מקרוב וללמוד על החיים והעשייה‬

‫החינוכית בשתי הקהילות‪ .‬הסמינרים יכללו בין השאר אירוח בבתים של העמיתים‪.‬‬
‫סמינר משותף באילת אילות מתוכנן להתקים במאי ‪ ,2022‬וסמינר משותף בטורונטו מתוכנן‬

‫להתקיים באוקטובר ‪.2022‬‬
‫• צוות התכנית ילווה את התהליך הן במסגרת מפגשי הלמידה והן בתהליכי ההטמעה העיבוד ויישום‬

‫ברמה העירונית‪.‬‬
‫• הערכה ומדידה ‪ -‬התוכנית תלווה בתהליכי הערכה הן ביחס לתהליכי הלמידה והן ביחס לפיתוח התוצרים‬

‫החינוכיים ויישומם הלכה למעשה בשדה החינוכי‪.‬‬
‫• בוגרי התכנית יפיקו תוצרים חינוכיים במהלך התכנית ‪ -‬תוכנית פעילות בית ספרית בנושא עמיות‬
‫• שנה ראשונה ‪ -‬בשלב א'‪ :‬יוצגו משימות ספציפיות למורים לצורך התנסות במגוון מתודות ותחומים‪.‬‬

‫בשלב ב‪ :‬תבנה תוכנית לשילוב שילוב התחום בביה"ס ויבחר מימד אחד להתנסות מעשית‪.‬‬
‫• שנה שניה ‪ -‬סיום פיתוח והפעלה של תוכניות עמיות בית ספרית המיושמת במהלך שנת הלימודים‬

Innovation in Israel Education
Interfaces: The Israel-Peoplehood Curriculum Project
An Educators’ Immersive Training and Curriculum Development Opportunity

Introduction
Israel's vibrant and eclectic society and its geopolitical reality have always posed a
challenge for Israel Education in the Diaspora. Over the past several years we have
been looking for ways to provide our students with a realistic, contemporary view of
Israel with respect to the aforementioned characteristics and challenges. Our goal
is to nurture in our students a comprehensive understanding of the importance
of Israel as a cornerstone for Jews in the Diaspora and in Israel and to establish
long-lasting, authentic, and meaningful connections to Israel and to its people.

What is the Objective?
The main goal is to develop a body of knowledge on contemporary Israel and the
factors that consistently shape it. In addition, and most importantly, we wish to
provide tools to create, and to support the educators in creating a 14-unit curriculum
for middle school students. Working in collaboration with a cohort of teachers and
experts in Israel (through the Jewish Agency's twinning school network) this will be
done through a 2-year immersive professional development process.

The professional development and curriculum building will focus on seven core
pillars of content, with two units created for each pillar:

1. Israel’s Geopolitical Context
Since ancient times, the land of Israel has been the epicenter of friction between
world powers which have determined its fate. The State of Israel’s very establishment
was largely dependent on a decision made by the United Nations and today the need
for international legitimacy continues to be a necessary part of sustaining Israel’s
existence. By engaging in this unit examining Israel through the lens of broader
global processes, participants will learn about and understand Israel’s borders
and their formation, associated milestones in Israel’s history, Israel’s international
development over the years and the future of Israel’s existence.

2. Israel as the State and Homeland of the Jewish People:
A great deal of misinformation and disinformation surrounds Israel's desire to be
recognized as a Jewish state. In practice, the concept refers to acknowledgment of
the Jewish people's right to self-determination in the land of Israel, also known as
Zionism. In this unit, participants will critically explore the statutory and fundamental
rights of Israel as the state of the Jewish people.

3. Israel as a Jewish and a Democratic State:
Israel’s Declaration of Independence recognizes Israel as both a democratic and
Jewish state. In practice, this entails a constant tension between ‘church and state’
that manifests itself in various ways. Through this unit, participants will understand
the origins and ongoing consciousness of this tension on Israel’s politics, civic rights,
and its relationship with Diaspora Jewry.

4. Israel’s Civic Society:
Israel has one of the most vibrant and influential civic societies, including a broad
variety of “NGOs” (non-governmental organizations) which support social communal
needs and provide a variety of social services in collaboration with the government.
These entities comprise what is referred to as the “third sector” in Israel which consists
of a large group of organizations that share a similar legal status but differ greatly in
terms of their areas of activity and the way they operate. In this unit, participants
will learn about the associational aspects of the third sector in Israel, with emphasis
on the impact these NGOs have on Israel’s social agenda and practice as well as its
international impact.

5. The Israeli Mosaic:
Ideological, cultural, economic, and ethnic perspectives permeate Israeli society.
Through the lens of social and cultural diversity, this topic will introduce participants
to the richness of Israel’s society, the origins and evolution of the Israeli demographic
mosaic, the opportunities it offers and the challenges it poses, and the way it shapes
the contemporary face of the nation.

6. Israeli Culture and Arts: A look at Past and Present Trends and Symbolism:
This unit will allow participants an insight into the formation and evolution of Israel’s
social agenda through the lens of its cultural arts, in particular music, film, poetry
and prose. Through experiential learning, participants will learn about the evolving
perceptions of gender roles, war and peace, political trends, socio-economic and
ethnic differences and more.

7. Israel, the Arab Nations and Nationalities:
Throughout its existence, Israel’s relationship with the Arab nations, as well with its
Arab citizens and Palestinians who are living both inside and outside of its borders, has
been the main core element in Israel’s domestic and political agenda, as well as a main
determiner of its international status. In this unit, participants will be able to critically
learn about the formations of the aforementioned relationships; the identity, political
and international conflicts this generates; and the ways these conflicts have occurred
and been addressed in the last two decades.

The Experience
Two cohorts of teachers, one in Toronto and the other in Israel, will engage in a
concurrent and equivalent professional development process over a two-year span.
The groups will experience training, theory and knowledge on the seven pillars from
experts in various fields. Educator support will be provided in the creation of an Israel
Education curriculum that meets the unique needs of each school through guidance
and mentoring by a designated professional consultant and facilitator. The two groups
of teachers will interact during the process which will also include two seminars: one
will take place in Israel in May 2022, the other in Toronto in October 2022.

My name is Aviva Wisznia, and I have been teaching at Etzion Gaver School for 19 years.
I signed up for the “Paths of Identity” course in order to gain tools for deepening knowledge and
understanding about Diaspora Jewry. I would also like to develop a dialogue in the school that
connects Diaspora Jews and Israeli society.
Early in my career, I worked as a homeroom teacher and student council coordinator. In recent years I
have been teaching English language learning in an experiential way and through digital tools.
In the field of Jewish culture and as part of my studies at the university, I took various courses, including
social patterns in Israel, Israeli society and its many facets, social structures and the like.
As a homeroom teacher, I educated and taught to preserve the connection between Diaspora Jews
and Israeli Jews. I instilled values, culture and affinity for the Jewish community around the world.
When I was a homeroom teacher, students at the Bialik School in Toronto had shared their lesson
plans, and I took an active part in the joint project. During the project, there was knowledge sharing
in connection with the values of Judaism and sustainability. I prepared lesson plans, accompanied and
assisted the students in writing letters in English.
I also attended online meetings with the Toronto school community.

Oriane is a veteran teacher and lifelong learner. She taught in Johannesburg, where she grew up, in
Israel and Los Angeles. She has taught at Bialik Hebrew Day School in the Senior Division since 2002.
She is a House Dean, has led the Student Council for 16 years as the Staff Advisor and enjoys her role
as a Mechanechet.
Oriane teaches Social Studies, Massoret and Moreshet.
Her subjects embrace her love of history, as well as her strong connection to Jewish values, traditions
and Israel. She consistently seeks ways to bring history to life and to connect it to the present and
encourages her students to follow current events. She focuses on teaching her students to question,
discover, seek solutions to challenges and develop grit and resilience.
Oriane is married with three adult children.
She is a dog lover, avid reader, lap swimmer and enjoys working out at the gym.

Hello my name is Iris Perlman and I am a Jewish studies teacher and a mechanechet at Bialik Hebrew
Day School. Currently I am teaching Moreshet, Historia, and Ivrit in the senior division classes. Prior to
my arrival to Canada I taught high school students in Israel for the duration of 12 years. As a teacher
I am beyond appreciative to be able to form strong relationships with students. In addition I am for-
tunate to be able to provide my students with a safe learning environment and an emphasis on their
wellbeing in and out of school grounds. I have a deep passion for Ahavat Israel and I am thankful for the
privilege to be able to implement the importance of Jewish identity and the history of Judaism during
each and everyone of my lessons. Outside of the classroom environment I love spending time with my
3 sons and husband.
I take part in a community running group twice a week, and I also have a deep passion for reading in
Hebrew. On a final note I am thrilled to be a part of this amazing program and can not wait to strengthen
my ability to provide my students with plentiful information and concepts of Judaism and Israel.

My name is Orna Gabay.
I was born in Israel and I have lived in Canada most of my adult life.
I began my journey as an educator with Robbins Hebrew Academy in Toronto, many years ago.
I started as an elementary teacher but quickly “graduated” to the middle school division at my school.
My only child, Logan, is a journalist in British Columbia, and he makes me extremely proud each and
every day. I love my extended family, Israel, music, the gym, shopping, reading and learning new things.
I believe in teaching from the heart and being a leader to my students.
I have a passion for helping all children reach their potential, and love to challenge them to be curious
and to take chances when learning. No matter the journey or obstacle that comes along, I would like
my students to strive for their best and know that every problem has a solution.
My students bring me enormous joy, and I thank them for ccepting me as their captain.

47 years old, lives on Kibbutz Ketura. Married and father of three children aged 18, 15 and 12.
I am a history teacher at Rabin High School in Eilat.
I was born in Moshav Ramot Hashavim to parents who were chicken coop farmers – and returned
to raising free-range chickens on the kibbutz after 30 years.
As a teen, I was in the Noam youth movement, which is affiliated with the Conservative movement. As
part of my army service in a garin Nahal, I found myself living on Kibbutz Ketura, and after finishing
my service I met there my lovely wife Katie, who was a volunteer from New Zealand.
We left the kibbutz for Jerusalem to study history at the Hebrew University, while continuing to
work in the youth movement. After graduating, we packed a bag and a child and traveled to New
Zealand, where I served as head of the Jewish community for two years. After 7 good years with my
wife in Jerusalem and New Zealand, we returned to Kibbutz Ketura, to continue to create many more
positive years together. On the kibbutz I worked in the kitchen, landscaping, in informal education
and finally I was the human resources manager on the kibbutz for 8 years. At the end of that period,
I went back to doing what I love most – education. I have been a history teacher and homeroom
teacher for the past six years and am excited to begin the program.

My name is Becky Kimchi, I’m 41 years old, married and the mother of four. I was born in the city of
Eilat. This is the sixth year that I have been teaching sociology/psychology for 5 units matriculation
in the social sciences at Begin High School in Eilat. For the past three years, I have been the school’s
social education coordinator and responsible for educational content, ceremonies, events and lots
of value-related activities.
My greatest moments of happiness and the thing I love most about my work are all those times when
I feel I can be a significant figure for a student, parent, and school staff. I feel it is great privilege to lead
education towards values, thinking and involvement. From the moment I took on the role of social
education coordinator, I have been constantly working for the community. Encouraging students to
work for the community leads me to creative initiatives and ideas, and our connection with the
community is strong and meaningful.
I am a person who loves people. I enjoy social gatherings, and I especially love to learn and educate
myself in a variety of fields of knowledge.
My best times are those when I manage to turn the impossible – possible.

My name is Brett Copeland.
Currently, I am the Principal of Robbins Hebrew Academy.
I have been in education since 2007, serving the Jewish community of Toronto.
As a former language arts and social studies teacher, I am excited to dialogue with passionate
educators about ways to improve our students’ engagement with Israel and look to create meaningful
and interesting activities that foster creative and critical thinking skills.
I come with an interesting perspective, as both a gay man and non-Jewish educator, and having
taught at the high school and middle school levels.
With this, I am excited to see how we can capture and share Israel’s rich diversity and social dynamics.

Hi, I am 35 years old, married + 2 children, have lived in Eilat for about seven years and work as an

Because my wife works for the Jewish Agency, the world of Jewish peoplehood has been part of my
life for several years, during which I have taken an active or indirect part in a variety of programs
that have included contact with Diaspora Jewry. I look forward to being a part of the program and

My name is Guy Mannheim and I was born and raised in Israel.
I teach the Senior Division at the Bialik Hebrew Day School in Toronto, and this is my fourth year at school.
I teach Hebrew, Tanach and Historia, and the thing I enjoy the most about teaching is sharing my love
for Israel and for the Jewish History with my students. I have a B.A. from the Tel Aviv University, where
I also taught, a teacher’s certificate from the Tel Aviv University, and an M.A. in Jewish Education
from the Hebrew University. I have three children, the older one just had a Bar Mitzvah, and I had the
pleasure of tutoring him for that. I am fascinated by the options that remote learning and the use of
technology can offer us and our students.

My name is Galit Cohen, I am 52 years old and a mother of three adult children. I have lived in Eilat since
I was a teacher in the military service.
I studied teaching at Lewinsky Seminar and then continued to an MA degree in Bible studies in Tel
Aviv University.
For the past 28 years I have been teaching Bible at Begin High School and preparing students for the
final’s exams.
Throughout my years working in Begin High School, I was in charge of the social education for about 13
years and also coordinated the Bible profession and other responsibilities.
One of the most significant jobs for me was being in charge of the twin cities project between Eilat and
cities around the world.
I believe that education is a mission and that the local youth connection with youth abroad - can bear
fruit for a better future for all of us.
And in the words of Yanush Korchak

My name is Galit Segor and I have been an art and theater teacher for 21 years.
I was born in Afula and started my first year of teaching in Eilat and since then I have been teaching at
the” Ofir” Elementary School for Art.
As a kid, I used to look at My teachers with sparkling eyes and wonder how they know so many things? :)
I wanted to be like them.
My dream was to be a teacher and in combination with my creativity, I taught English in an experiential
way in the lower grades. I served as a social education coordinator and today I teach art and theater at
the school.
I like to see in education the same spark I had as a child with the students.
I love the sense of satisfaction of being able to influence, encourage, promote and nurture the younger
generation.
In my free time I like to go to the sea, bake, doing arts and crafts or enjoy watching a good movie or t.v
series.
Last year I graduated with honors my Master’s degree, and after a period of time as a form teacher ,due
to the situation, I went back to teaching art and especially running the theater group again .we turn the
written stories into a play and bring it out of school to the kindergarten and nearby school community.

My name is Be’eri Dorit, I was born in Eilat and so were my children. I have been an English teacher
at the same elementary school for seventeen years. Sparked by my love for the Land of Israel, for the

in Bible studies in the school, which was not a given due to the lack of English teachers. I joined this

many fields, mainly Math, Technology, and Robotics. I have a master in Education. Between the years
2000-2004, Me and my wife were Shlichim by the Jewish Agency in Indianapolis, we really enjoyed our
experience. I also got to know better the different sides of the Jewish life and traditions in the US. Since
2008 I teach in Almog elementary school in Eilat. During the last years I was involved in the Robotics
twinning schools project with the Toronto schools.

Zohara Greenbaum is a passionate educator who is dedicated to student centered learning and success.
She is both a General and Judaic Studies teacher at the Danilack Middle School at Associated Hebrew
School and has been teaching for nearly 10 years.
She is thrilled to be back teaching in-person and thrives on the energy of lively class discussion and
debate. As the child of both an Israeli and a Canadian, with Polish and Moroccan heritage, she has
gained a great appreciation for the beautiful spectrum of Jewish tradition and culture.
In her spare time, Zohara enjoys film festivals, travelling and is an aspiring “foodie.”
She is the proud mother of two AHS students and is honoured to be a part of this wonderful program.

My name is Hana Macmull and I am excited to be a part of this amazing group of educators. My academic
career began at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem where I studied Education and Theater. After I
moved to Canada, I continued my education at York University in Toronto, and have since taken various
courses through the board of Jewish Education. I started my journey at Robbins Hebrew Academy as a
parent looking for a school that would reflect my views and philosophies about raising Jewish global
citizens. As an Israeli, I also looked for a school that would promote and instill the love for Israeli culture
and Judaism. Shortly after enrolling my children, I began teaching Grades 6, 7, and 8 Tanach, Ivrit, and
Rabbinics at RHA. I am proud to say that I have been a teacher at RHA for 28 years and for the past 2
years, I have taken on the role of Director of Judaic Studies. I have participated in numerous professional
development workshops run by JTS where a team of teachers developed curriculum units for Tanach
and Rabbinics. I enjoy reading, dancing, and watching plays or films. I am looking forward to creating
new and long-lasting connections, and also learning from each and every one of you.

My name is Tom Rimon.
I joined Associated Hebrew School six years ago as an Ivrit and Jewish History teacher. One of my passions
while teaching is to show my students the love for Israel and pass it on to them.
My family and I moved to Canada from Israel in 2015.
In Israel, I was a media high school teacher, and before that, I was a cinematographer for 12 years.
During my tenure at Associated, I discovered the world of Pedagogical Technology and have been
using it every day in my classes and while mentoring teachers at school.
My wife is an Occupational Therapist, and we have three children, two boys and a girl.
I am a big sports fan and follow both teams from Israel and North America.
In the short summers we have in Canada, my family and I love to travel and see our beautiful country

Hello, my name is Yasmin Lasri, I have a 3.5 year old son-Bnaya.
I’m in my ninth year at Galim School working with 3rd graders this year.
I also teach: language, math, the Bible and life skills.
I came to Eilat about twenty years ago thanks to the Toronto community and the opportunity I
came to teaching from the field of informal education where I worked for years.
I love the educational act and feel lucky to share my day with pupils and amongst other educators.
I am excited about the opportunity of studying with educators from another country, and together
to develop educational initiatives to deepen the connection between the Jews in the world.

My name is Lenore Lanel and I am the Moreshet teacher at Bialik Hebrew Day School (Himel Branch).
I have been teaching for 15 years - 10 years in Israel and 5 years at Bialik. My favourite thing about
teaching is that it is dynamic and always changing. I love that there are always new ways to teach
material.

Outside of school, I am a mom of three children (Ella - 8, Amit - 6 and Noa - 2) who keep me quite busy.
I love to bake, read, knit and can’t wait to travel again! I met my husband in Israel and our oldest chil-
dren were born while we were living there.

I am passionate about Israel and Israeli culture and I am very excited to be on the Bialik team to

I grew up in Ramle, and after my military service I moved to Eilat to work and have been here ever since.

My name is Meirav Alon, I have been a teacher for 40 years and an English teacher for 33 years. I’m also
a certified travel agent. I have lived in Eilat for 40 years since the time I was a soldier-teacher. When I
met the man I married, he was a new immigrant only 6 weeks in the country, and he came from an
English-speaking country, Zimbabwe. We have two grown children and 4 sweet granddaughters. I love
doing lots of things ranging from sports, yoga, reading, hiking, watching movies and television series and
entertainment. Two months ago, my husband and I started hiking the “Israel Trail” and hope to finish
it with God’s help. We are a family of athletes and every four years everyone takes time off, the second
grandmother gets in gear and takes care of the granddaughters, and the entire Alon family goes to see the
Olympics. We have already attended six events, but we did not go to Tokyo because of the coronavirus.
In 2024 we will hopefully travel to Paris. In 1999, I participated in the Jewish Agency’s “Living Bridge”
program. As part of the project schools from Toronto teamed up with schools from Eilat, and according to
an organized work plan the students’ exchanged letters. I then flew to Toronto, where I met the teachers
and students. I remember it as an empowering experience for the school, teachers and every student.
I don’t know why this project has faded out, maybe because of the entry of the Internet into our reality...
but here we are again…

Mara Benjamin is primarily a teacher and mother working and living in Eilat.
In her role as a teacher of English and Diplomacy, she has had the chance to share with 100’s of
students her love of language and international communications.
Mara was instrumental in opening both the Diplomacy program and the first cohort of the Cafe
Hafooch program in Eilat.
In addition, Mara is a debate coach and a Model UN advisor. Her talented students have brought
home several awards related to these national events.

My name is Nurit Tamari
I have about 20 years’ experience in education.
Being a teacher is a special thing for me, as I love the connection with young kids. I love the every
morning meeting with them in the schoolyard, with happy faces and lovely smiles.
I am an autodidact: I study various subjects by myself: bible studies, Judean desert scrolls, mindful-
ness,
meditation etc.
I love learning languages; I study French for my own joy. I practice Yoga and do meditation daily. I also
like everything that connects with the sea (especially the red sea) I try to swim and paddle (sup) as
much as I can.
My family is my inspiration. My daughter Talia is 24 years old. She lives in Jerusalem and studies
education in David Yalin college. My middle son Iftach is 20 years old and is serving the army in
Shizafon base in the desert. My younger son Omri is studying in the last year of high school.
My husband Zohar is working in pest control and has a business for desert tourism.
When we moved to this region 17 years ago, I have established a democratic school in Eilat named
“Dolphin”.
It was related to building a network of people that were interested in the idea and were dedicated to it.
The school was closed after one year for various reasons (I can tell you all about it when we meet...)

I live in Eilat for ten years. I’m married and a mom of two daughters. I work as a teacher six years at
Yaelim Elementary School in Eilat. I am very proud of my educational work in the school and the
development of technology and robotics that I brought to school. The thing I love most and connect
with teaching is learning something new every day, getting out of the box, connecting technology and
teaching. I really like volunteering and am always looking for ways to help and contribute to the
community, in the past I volunteered for the police and with Holocaust survivors. Outside of school life

My name is Noa, and since my second year of teaching I have taught at Almog School, a school that

Hi, I’m Naomi Hass.
I am a British Israeli, living in Toronto, soon to become Canadian too. Before moving to Canada, I lived
in Israel for ten years and before that, I lived in England. I now teach Middle School in Paul Penna DJDS.
I’ve taught and been involved in a wide range of Jewish schools in England and Toronto, and taught in
one of Jerusalem’s international schools while I lived there. Israel has been a piece of all of my teach-
ing, whether we approached it directly, in Jewish Day Schools in England and Toronto, or impacted my
teaching in Israel in a totally different way, teaching in Jerusalem to non Jewish children from all over the
world. I’m delighted to be a part of this program and look forward to thinking about how to strengthen
the connection my students feel with Israel.

My name is Sigal Asraf. I am a teacher at Goldwater highschool in Eilat.
I married a native Eilati and 21 years ago, I followed him into the desert where I found the job of my
dreams. My husband Yaniv works at the hotel industry and today he is a general manager in one of
the hotels in Eilat. I have two sons and one daughter. My eldest son, Ilay, is going to start his military
service in November. Idan, studies at Goldwater in the 10th grade and Ofri studies at Hayovel in the
2nd grade. I have been a history teacher and a homeroom teacher in the junior high for the past 20
years. 15 years of which I was a coordinator of junior high classes. for the past 8 years, I have also
been responsible for the teaching of social and cultural values and involvement in the community
including the student’s council.
I love my work and I love the connection with the kids and seing their development from young
kids to young adults about to join the army. I enjoy coming up with different projects together with
the teachers and the students and to travel and celebrate together with them; To be there for them
whenever they need me. I am proud to volunteer at Beit Rephael (packing meals for the weakened
neighborhoods), to volunteer on special days and I love writing and executing ceremonies for
special occasions.
This year I am a homeroom teacher of a Telem Class with 30 challenging students. This is a different
and interesting experience which fulfils me in a meaningful way.
Education for me is an important value and when I meet my students as adults I am filled with pride
and joy. I am blessed with the job of my dreams.

Adi Barel is the Associate Director of Jewish Studies at Bialik Hebrew Day School, Canada.
A firm believer in lifelong learning, she holds B.As in Education and in Psychology, an Advanced Certificate
of Hebrew and Jewish Studies, an Ontario Ministry of Education & Training Certification, and the iCenter’s
Masters Concentration in Israel Education.
Adi is currently completing her M.A. in Education through Hebrew University.
Adi started her education journey while still in High School as a Madricha, and ultimately a Rakezet
Hadracha, in the GTA Israeli Scouts. This paved the way for her experiential approach to education,
which she has carried with her through previous roles as a tutor for all ages: a teacher at supplementary
school programs, and a homeroom teacher at Bialik. When it comes to Israel Education, Adi’s passion
lies in kindling within each student a sense of Ahavat and Havanat Israel: a love for-, and understanding
of-, Israel. She is thrilled to now be a part of a team that influences Israel, Hebrew and Jewish Studies
programming across Bialik’s branches.

Omer works as a teacher at the Posluns branch of the Associated Hebrew Schools, where he reaffirms
his long-held commitment to educating the younger generations on Ancient and Modern Jewish
History, the History of the State of Israel, and the Hebrew language.
Besides his current position and seeing himself as a lifelong learner, Omer is also a Doctoral Candidate
in the Department of Jewish History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
He also holds B.A and M.A degrees from the Department of Israel Studies at the University of Haifa.
Prior to arriving in Toronto, he taught History for 7 years at the High School branch of the Hebrew
Reali School in Haifa, and also served for 4 years as a research assistant at the Institute for Israel
studies at the University of Texas at Austin.

I grew up in the Jewish Day Schools of Toronto.
I never really knew what I wanted to do until I had a major basketball injury.
It was near the end of university in a psych degree, and I felt the next step couldn’t be law or real estate
as others suggested. The injury forced me to stay in bed for weeks. Stuck with myself, my room, and my
computer a passion was found. I began reading books for kind of the first time in my life—Harry Potter was
the exception in eight grade—and loving Jewish philosophy, history, and ethics. I soon found a masters
degree in Jewish Ed and later met my mentors who would guide me in Dr. Barry Levy and Dr. David Novak.
I met them quite serendipitously and the learning and mentor shop I’ve gained is all thanks to them.
I then pursued an Ma in Jewish studies focusing on intellectual history and Jewish thought. At the same
time I made my way into the Jewish educational system teaching at CHAT, Or Chaim, and other schools.
For the past 4 years I have been teaching Tanakh and Jewish History at RHA middle school and teaching
philosophy at Torah High for high school students in the evenings.
I love reading many genres including history and philosophy as well as my Zionist book club I’ve joined.
I occasionally teach at Limmud and look forward to extracurricular learning.
I recently picked up guitar and love classic rock.
My wife, Lianne and I recently had our first baby girl, and Amber is all we can think of!
I’m looking forward to increasing engagement with my students and their Israeli history, the land, and
it’s people

Rena Markus has spent close to 20 years as a teacher in Toronto.
She has taught various grades at the Paul Penna Downtown Jewish Day School and currently serves
as Vice Principal. As a teacher and administrator, Rena enjoys building meaningful relationships with
students and staff. She has acted as lay leader for the ShinShinim program in the past, and serves on
the Board of Directors of her children’s school. Rena is the proud mother to three wonderful children.

My name is Tamara Mirel, and I have been an English teacher for the past 12 years. I am currently teaching
at the Yitzhak Rabin High School, and this is my first year at both the school and in the city of Eilat.
From a young age I have felt a unique connection to the English language and in the contexts in which
I use this language, whether writing or speaking, I feel great satisfaction and enjoyment. These feel-
ings only intensify when I am given the opportunity of leading educational processes with students
who are learning English as a foreign language. I can attest that I am lucky, as my professional world
allows me to connect the two significant loves in my life – teaching and English.
In my free time I like to paint in oils, listen to music and podcasts, and take part in sports activities.
But my main hobby is to “engage” and deal with English in different contexts and in every possible
way, like reading English language articles on various topics (teaching English, Sustainability and
Sustainable Development Goals, and watching Ted lectures).

Elan Ezrachi, PhD is a Jerusalem-based consultant in the areas of Jewish Peoplehood and Israel –
Diaspora relations. He is currently on the faculty of the MA program in Jewish Peoplehood and the
Ruderman Program on American Jewry at the University of Haifa.
Elan served in various executive roles including: the International Dept. of Melitz – Center for Jewish
Zionist education, the Charles Bronfman Mifgashim Center, Masa – Israel Journey (founding
CEO) and the International School for Jerusalem Studies at Yad Ben-Zvi.
Elan received his BA and MA from Hebrew University in Education and Jewish Thought and a doctorate
degree from the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. His dissertation topic was: “Encounters
between American Jews and Israelis: Israelis in American Jewish Summer Camps”.
He is the author of Awakened Dream – 50 Years of Complex Unification of Jerusalem.

JONNY is a connoisseur of experiential education. He has researched, designed and delivered
educational experiences for 40 years on four continents. His career has entailed teaching about Israel
and Contemporary Jewry, forging strategies for persistent
educational challenges and nurturing the next generation of educators.
He founded and led Makom: The Israel Education Lab of the Jewish Agency which
developed a pioneering pedagogy for embracing the vibrant complexity of Israel and the Jewish People.
Previously he held policy-making positions at the Mandel Leadership Institute, the United Jewish Israel

Galit Roichman is a screenwriter and an ardent cinema lecturer. She holds a bachelor’s degree in
Literature from the University of Haifa in Israel and a master’s degree in Cinema Studies from the

She lives and works in Tel Aviv and is a member of the Israeli Academy of Film and Television.
Through her lectures, Ms. Roichman interweaves ideas about Israeli cinema and Jewish education

A former Israeli diplomat with rich experience in global affairs, international media and the Jewish
world, DJ is an accomplished advocate and spokesman for Israel, highly regarded for his ability to
communicate Israel’s story to the world.
After making Aliya from Australia in 1987 DJ received his MA from Hebrew University in 1990 and joined
Israel’s Foreign Ministry (MFA) in 1994, where he built a distinguished career serving as advisor to several
of Israel’s Foreign Ministers, Press Secretary at Israel’s London Embassy (where he was recognized as
the most effective diplomatic spokesman in London), Deputy Ambassador to China, Consul General
to Toronto and Western Canada, and the MFA’s Director of Digital Diplomacy.
Since leaving the diplomatic corps in 2019, DJ has been working as an independent consultant,
advising private companies and public institutions, including the National Library of Israel, on
their strategy, communications and global outreach.
DJ is married with two children and lives in Jerusalem.

Michael Bauer is a professional educator and tour guide, and the author of “Israel Journey - Eight Days
In One Of The World’s Most Complex Countries Bauer specializes in Geopolitical Tours in Israel
and has developed workshops on various topics: Israeli-Arab relations, Israel’s minority populations,
Israel’s borders and neighbors, Middle East politics and History. As a field educator and tour guide with
over 24 years of experience, Michael has led adventure tours around Israel, Jordan, the Sinai desert,
and Turkey, as well as dozens of educational programs in Poland and Germany. Michael currently
teaches Middle Eastern History in several Pre-Army institutes and provides security briefs, lectures and
seminars to a variety of groups and international institutions. Michael has had the privilege of guiding
and teaching: Senators and Parliament members from different countries, Military Intelligence Units,
Celebrities from the entertainment industry, University students, Faculty members and presidents of
ivy league universities and more.
Michael has also been invited on several speaking tours across North America including the Har-
vard Kennedy School and the Canadian Parliament. Michael served as a commander in the paratroop
forces as his mandatory IDF service and for many years on reserves.
