Poetry Zainab Pirzada XI A note on my mother Between tough love and hatred Exists a frail line There, my dear mother stands. A face painted with a grimace She looks down upon me Sitting in a house of lunacy That she so blissfully built For years, I fought this calamity, Which I lost bits of myself to I have been stripped of any feeling of vengeance So I stood bare and vulnerable In front of my dear mother Who couldn’t believe The atrocity That stood in front Was the creation of her – Disenfranchised grief. A note on nothingness I was told all humans are born with a void And it is the duty of life to fill it With content, compassion, and care Life was loyal to all others. To the children in the playground With parents who would travel miles and miles To refill their buckets of duty Who made sure the void would not parch Life brought all the other children, The simple joys of life Surrounded them with souls With ever-so-full voids Who wouldn't dare not to share? How unfortunate I must be, To have graveyards fill To have absences fill To have hospitals fill Anything but my anguished void. A hapless victim, I was And shall remain to be. Student Log #5

My sweet escape I t was a dull evening. Most of them were. This specific one though, the seasonal depression was starting to get to me. I thought it was in my favor to go out for a walk. The blanket that was draped around me had to be removed, unfortunately. I put a cardigan on and made my way to my woodlike, cat scratched, old entrance gate, and then I put one foot out after the other. It was so windy I could practically hear the whooshing sound around me. My hair was clashing with my face a little too much. It started to annoy me. Anyway, my sight eventually wandered off to the trees which were swaying with the wind, it was as if there was some rhythm they identified, which remained unknown to me. Their leaves had a wide variety of colors; from green, to some of them being variegated, to yellow, and finally brown. They rustled in agreement with their upholders. I continued my stroll. A little down the path I came across a few strays. I believe it was a mother and her offspring. They were all with fur of a slightly muted orange color. She was protective of her kittens, the motherly instinct. It’s uncanny how alike humans and animals are. Yet, humans believe they’re superior to them. If anything, humans believe they’re superior to other humans too. Human nature doesn’t make much sense to me. Student Log #10 A short story Simra Shaikh - Grade X

Further down my path of despair, I saw a lady in her 70s. Her face was full of wrinkles holding a lifetime full of memories, and her white hair indicating all the things she’s seen. She was sitting on a rusted metallic bench, fully covered with all sorts of advertisements, posters, fliers, etc. The vibrancy of it felt out of place in accordance with the environment surrounding it. Student Log #11 The old lady’s nose was buried in a book, it had a hand embroidered cover so I presumed it was a classic. I went to sit next to her on the bench to catch my breath. The ancient bench squeaked with my every move; it was as if it was mocking my young soul for being stuck in an unbelievably unathletic body. Regardless, I made small talk with the lady. She had this gummy smile which I found absolutely adorable. She radiated some sort of softness. After a while, I bid my goodbyes to my lovely, temporary companion and went on. I looked up, had the sky always been that pretty? The fluffy clouds looked almost mystical, constantly flowing into the vastness of it all. The sky had different hues, it was blue, but somewhat of a sad blue, the kind you’d see in cinematic masterpieces. The sun shone through the clouds, it looked as if the heavens were descending on a Friday. I was starting to turn around to get back home when a lake in the distance caught my eye. Before I knew it, I was walking toward it. I’d never really paid attention to the pavement before, it got more and more rocky as I went deeper in. The gray color grew darker too. Once I reached there, the first thing I laid my eyes on was the grass, it was unusually green. So green it contrasted with the atmosphere. I spotted some ducks; their cute little yellow beaks and webbed feet always fascinated me. The lake looked as if it were out of a Disney movie. It had the most perfect lily pads. I looked to see my distorted reflection on the water’s surface. Sometimes I’d wonder where it all went wrong. Why some people had picture perfect lives while others suffered endlessly. Why was it all so imbalanced? But, all of it felt so mundane there. It was so quiet. So ethereal. That was what serenity felt like. I decided at that very moment that this was it. This was my sweet escape.

A mystical destination in Yoshino during the Sakura season. Walking down the streets as the pink tinted leaves of blossom trees swiftly glide their way by my shoulder. The sky seemed as if the ethereal rose-tinted heavens adorned with billowing clouds that seem to have been sketched by an artist's hand, their forms soft and dreamlike. Graceful doves soar amidst the delicate, cotton-candy clouds, basking in the gentle caress of sunbeams. The soft, fragrant breeze carries hints of blossoms and earth, awakening my senses with a symphony of scents, and evoking a poignant rush of emotions. As I walk down the dimly lit, concrete road, my cold skin meets the warmth of my hot chocolate, making me feel like I'm on a freshly laid path. The world around me is filled with vibrant colors, and the rich scent of cocoa wafts up to greet my senses, wrapping me in a comforting embrace. A mixture of different feelings making this moment filled with even more ecstasy. The rosy leaves and warm sunbeams danced together, creating a breathtaking harmony, akin to a page torn from a magical storybook. Nestled on a bench beneath a blooming cherry blossom tree, I gently lifted the cover of my steaming hot chocolate, my gaze tracing the scene before me. With each sip, a gentle wave of serenity enveloped my being, as if the very essence of the moment found a home within me. I find myself drawn to the distant hum of the sweeping wind and the gentle rustle of the brittle leaves underfoot, my gaze drifting down to my abandoned, lukewarm cocoa, a pang of sadness settling in, while looking at the empty cup. As the first light of dawn inches closer to its destined moment, the vivid saturation and brilliant exposure of the sky, along with the vibrant colors that envelop my surroundings, gradually wane into an ethereal veil. In this transition, the bustling presence of people Student Log #12 around me quietly dissipates, leaving behind a longing to relive this very moment. As the ecstatic embrace of the awakening world gently fades into the arms of the night, its shadow cast as the world begins to drift into slumber. A crystal-clear stream gracefully meandering beneath the arches of the nearby bridge, its gentle swishing melody weaving through the air, infusing the surroundings with a profound serenity. The soothing echo of its flow stirs a tender sense of nostalgia, evoking memories long thought forgotten and filling the atmosphere with a sentimental yet comforting embrace. The feeling I had, which was once strong and lively, is now fading away slowly, making me feel sad and alone. As time goes by, I start to feel more and more alone, and I can't help but notice that everyone around me seems to realize I'm here, making me feel even more alone as dullness arises. The Israel-Hamas war, explained breifly Now, how exactly did this all begin? Politics #21 The UN reported that around 1 million Palestinians, nearly half of Gaza's population, have been displaced. Fears of a humanitarian crisis were heightened after Israel cut off food, water, electricity, and fuel supplies to Gaza, which had already been blockaded previously. Hospitals and NGOs have stressed the fact that they are running out of supplies and are unable to treat aid. The international reaction to this conflict, as expected, is rather split. At least 44 nations denounced Hamas and explicitly described its actions as acts of terrorism; including a joint statement by the U.S., France, Britain, Italy, and Germany. In contrast, countries across the Middle East called for de-escalation and brought up the fact that Israel's decades-long forced occupation of Palestine was the root cause; as Hamas had explicitly stated that their actions were in response to Israeli settler violence, the blockade of the Gaza Strip, the desecration of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, as well as Israeli atrocities against Palestinians over the decades. On 7th October 2023, Hamas (a Palestinian political and military group) , which had avoided conflict with Israel for much of 2022 and 2023, launched a surprise coordinated attack, beginning with more than 3,000 rocket strikes fired from the Gaza Strip, and leading to other coordinated attacks, such as the massacre at the "Supernova Sukkot Gathering" dance music festival (the deadliest concert attack in history), and the abduction of many Israeli citizens (civilians and soldiers both), which has, overall, led to the deaths of 1,400 Israelis. In retaliation, Israel formally declared war on Hamas and launched retaliatory airstrikes the next day, which have, as of October 16, killed more than 3,500 Palestinians, many of them civilians, and with many more unaccounted for. There have been widespread civilian deaths, and a panel of UN rapporteurs, along with human rights groups who have assessed the situation and accused both Israel and Hamas of war crimes. Decades have been spent in this ongoing back-and-forth narrative; which constitutes of an entire country of people who have been forced from their homes, and has now led to millions of others, who are innocent have utterly no part in this conflict, to suffer incessantly. Many civilians (amongst them around 2 dozen or so children and elderly) were taken by Hamas as hostages; nothing more than collateral in this conflict, used as bargaining chips

Politics #22 between these two states in the middle of their war. What fault was theirs in this matter? round 1,200 Palestinian children have been killed since October 7th. Hundreds of thousands more suffer due to the massive offensive Israel has launched against the Gaza Strip, and they will continue to suffer and suffer because there will be no aid coming to Gaza due to the blockade. And on 13 October, the Palestinian Ministry of Health noted 20 surnames had been removed from Gaza's civil registry. This means that every single person in that entire family had been killed. A And though Israel states that is has given the citizens time to evacuate before it launches more strikes, the UN has declared that it is physically impossible for the Palestinians living in northern Gaza to evacuate in the time provided by Israel. War is never something that has a contained effect. Its effects cannot be stopped or prevented or curtailed in any way once started. War is a disease and it spreads at a terrifying rate and will continue to spread until it has laid waste to anything and everything in its path. Israel’s retaliatory actions against Hamas are instead being weathered by the people of Palestine, who have already endured countless grievances and acts of depravity. They are the ones paying the price of this war and they are paying it with their blood, despite the fact that they are innocent in this matter. For now, there must be a ceasefire; nothing will come of this, unless there is a ceasefire. A time should be brought upon for Israel to restore food, water, power, and other aid to Gaza. There should be time for the wounded to be treated, for the hostages to be released, for the evacuation of citizens from a literal warzone and for the dead to be buried and for their families to say their goodbyes and be allowed to properly pray and grieve for them. Gaza has already been stained red with the blood of innocents; it would be shameful to allow such a thing to continue. Peace is a faraway concept in the war between Israel and Palestine. But if peace cannot be achieved, then at least, at the very least, a respite should be granted, because truly, God only knows how much these people have suffered and how much they deserve to rest, even if only for a short time. In this complex world, development and technology improve exponentially, and with each second passing, but only for those who are wealthy enough. Poverty is one of the most concerning problems plaguing our world today. Moreover, around one fourth of the world’s population is entrenched in poverty, meaning they survive on less than a dollar a day. “ Poverty is a state that affects both the mind and the physical body. The one-quarter of the global population are stricken with malnutrition and hardship.Their child's future is in serious jeopardy-With the black cloud called poverty looming over them. Like an overgrown tumor, poverty prevents one from viewing life through colorful lenses, forcing people to only be concerned about survival, stopping one from progressing further in the world. Poverty does not allow people to think for their future. Poverty does not give the right to people to fill their stomach, and with an empty stomach a person cannot use his mind to think properly. Poverty prevents children from receiving proper education, causing them to have a dull future. No education means no jobs which manifests itself in empty pockets and vacant bank accounts. This will eventually result in no proper diet which will lead to malnutrition. As a matter of fact one-billion children are a victim of poverty, as children are not taught to differentiate between right and wrong, so then how will they flourish? Pakistan is particularly ridden with poverty. Half of the population does not sleep with their stomach full which can also be described as a reason for the peoples subsequent anger. A counter argument for this topic can be written as that poverty cannot overcome a person’s confidence. If a person has the will to do something, anything can be done. A person’s hard work can make them earning and fill their pocket which will in the end allow them to prosper. Besides, all those who are prosperous today were not so yesterday. So a little bit of strive and confidence in oneself can make one ascend summits they never dreamed of reaching. As said by Nelson Mandela: By Emaan Akmal Politics #23 Poverty is a handicap in life Poverty - A societal & mental handicap One needs a relaxed mind to prosper People can face poverty “As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality exist in our world, none of us can truly rest”

Urban Agriculture Urban Agriculture is something that’s not talked about a lot and even though our country is agricultural friendly, not everyone is able to take advantage of it. In this era of inflation where people think twice before buying a single item, we have to start being more independent. If used properly, we can grow a ton of food on a small land and you can do this even inside your home. When this idea was proposed, each and every one of our team members shared that they had a degree of experience in urban agriculture. So, we went ahead with it. A lot of people in urban areas have free open land, mostly people use it as a backyard or a garden which looks decent but isn’t a suitable solution for an agriculturally capable land. You can grow several kinds of fruits and vegetables and it would still look beautiful and save you a decent amount of money. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have land, you can use hydroponics and grow food indoors or outdoors, balcony, garden etc. You can also grow food inside your house with hydroponics, which is a modern solution to food shortages. It involves planting saplings in solutions and providing nutrients to them regularly. With this, you can even utilize your basements or cellars for growing food. We all have to contribute to this, so we can use more of the land/area that’s provided to us and not let it become a wasteland. We have enough land to grow food for every single one of us but still currently there are 783 million people who suffer from drought or starvation. If the government won't help them, they should help themselves. Science and Technology #25 Rayyan Jamshaid XI Written by

Ourgoal We just want to help everyone and anyone who is suffering because of food shortage. We have a way to help them and we should. We want more and more people to learn about Urban Agriculture and implement it. We want people to support us, so we are successful in helping everyone, especially regarding food which is a basic human right that no one should struggle to get. You can grow food with free land or with the help of hydroponics to not just help yourself but also help the poor people who can’t afford it. We want organizations and specially schools to promote and educate kids regarding Urban Agriculture. We have a petition which helps us promote the concept of urban agriculture to as many people as possible internationally, the more people who sign the petition the more people can know about this. We have also conducted a survey and will be doing a lot more in the future to learn the different perspectives of people regarding Urban Agriculture. This helps understand what the people around us think regarding this subject and if they are even willing to move ahead with our plan . So far, we’ve had positive results and more and more people are now getting interested in Urban Agriculture. It’s a slow process but it will work. How canyou help? We want more and more people to either implement this idea in their life or if you are unable or don’t have the resources, you can support us by filling our surveys and help us get more information or sign our petition or follow our social media handles, so we can get as much support as possible and we can. Influence more and more people and corporations who are willing to work on this project. Air Travel is notorious for being expensive; ticket prices for long-haul flights from Asia to The Americas range between $1000-$2000. Despite the high prices, air travel is not very comfortable as the aircrafts are cramped and airlines try to utilize the aircraft’s space as much as possible by reducing passengers’ legroom which makes planes even more uncomfortable to travel on. Airlines do this to gain maximum profit. Apart from air travel being inconvenient, it also has a deep effect on the environment as carbon emitted by aircrafts causes damage to the earth’s environment and results in unexpected climate changes, which is the leading factor to unusual natural disasters. As we progress into the future, innovations have taken over the aviation industry as well. Prototypes of Hydrogen-Powered planes have started appearing in the skies and are expected to flying commercially by 2035. This step would drastically reduce the carbon footprint as hydrogen planes use a cleaner source of fuel and could carry a higher number of passengers than current commercial airliners. Enhancing the aircraft design is also proven to be successful in minimizing emissions. A blended wing design combines the wing and the fuselage into a single unit so the entire aircraft provides the lift for the flight. Delta wings – like those used on the Concorde and high-speed military jets – may also be incorporated in some way into commercial planes. KLM is also working with Delft University of Technology on a “Flying V” plane that has passenger cabins down each side of a Vshaped aircraft. The company claims this type of plane could offer 20% more fuel efficiency than the A350. Airlines are constantly looking for ways to maximize the number of people they can put on each flight without sacrificing the comfort of the passengers. In the future, we may see improvements such as double-decker economy seats that promise more space for riders, paired with increased capacity for the airline. Using air taxis instead of short-haul planes like the Airbus A220 and Embraer is another way of improving the overall planning and management of flights. Using air taxis will not only reduce emissions of planes but the carbon footprint that road vehicles produce will be cut off as well, as air taxis are a suitable alternative to buses and coaches. In 2017, Volocopter completed their maiden flight for electrified individual air transport, and the Lilium Jet from Munich is reported to be able to fly 300km for an hour. Their five-seater air taxi could start operating as early as 2025, and traveling by air taxi could be as common as traveling by subway is in major cities today. Autonomous air taxis may follow shortly after as technology continues to evolve. The return of supersonic flights is also going to be happening in the near future. United plans to buy 15 new supersonic airliners, and hopes to "return supersonic speeds to aviation" by the year 2029. Previous supersonic passenger flights ended in 2003 when British Airways and Air France retired the Concorde. The definition of supersonic flight is when an aircraft travels faster than the speed of sound, which is approximately 660mph (1,060km/h) if the plane is traveling at an altitude of 60,000ft (18,300m). In-flight entertainment options of the future will include more screens, more gaming, and even the ability to take e-courses during your flight. Panasonic is also developing ways for passengers to improve wellness on flights by setting up lighting to regulate circadian rhythms on long-haul flights and dampening cabin noise to promote better sleep. VR and AR companies are also anxious to give travelers more immersive experiences on flights. Alaska Airlines and British Airways have tried SkyLight’s VR headsets in first-class cabins on selected routes. As the development of the metaverse continues, we'll likely see more opportunities for passengers to enjoy immersive experiences while flying. Food and Health #29 Fuel Your Body Ignite Your Health “The first wealth is health.” Your dietary decisions have the power to improve or deteriorate your health Food is essential to our wellbeing and serves as more than just a source of nutrition. It is without a doubt that diet and health are related. Our physical, mental, and emotional health are significantly impacted by the decisions we make while having dinner. -Ralph Waldo Emerson Food and health are crucially related, from the nutrients we eat to the habits we develop. The complex relationship between what we eat and how it affects our health, longevity, and day-to-day experiences. We may better grasp the role nutrition plays in our lives and make wise decisions to promote a healthier, happier existence by exploring the intersection of food and health. This article explores the link between nutrition and health, and also highlights how important it is to choose a diet that is healthy and happy for yourself. The foundation of good health is a balanced diet that is rich in necessary nutrients. Vitamins, minerals and antioxidants are essential nutrients that support healthy activities. For instance, calcium is necessary for healthy bones and vitamin C supports your immune system. Your body will receive the nutrients it needs to function at its best if you eat a range of foods that are high in nutrients. The obesity epidemic is a significant issue on a global scale. Consuming too many high-calorie processed meals and sugary beverages contributes to weight gain and other health problems. Recently the ‘World Health Organization’ reported that more than one million people in the world are obese, 650 million adults, 340 million adolescents and 39 million children. With nearly 30% of their inhabitants being obese, the Pacific Island nations of Nauru, the Cook Islands, and Palau have the highest rates of obesity.

Food and Health #30 It is important to recognize the close relationship between diet and health. Our physical health, emotional health, and longevity are all impacted by what we consume. Making wise dietary decisions is essential for preventing chronic diseases, preserving a healthy weight, enhancing mental and digestive health, and preventing chronic diseases. Understanding the importance of this connection enables us to take proactive measures for healthier and more satisfying lives. With only 2.1% of the population being fat, Vietnam is the nation with the lowest obesity rates. Eating healthfully is essential to our overall well-being and goes beyond just taste. For general wellbeing, a healthy stomach is necessary. Our healthy gut is directly impacted by the stuff we eat. A varied and healthy gut flora is supported by a diet high in fiber from whole grains, legumes, and vegetables. In turn, this can improve digestion, nutritional absorption, and the body's capacity to combat inflammation and infection. Food choices are the first step in the quest for a longer and healthier life. Longevity can be aided by a diet rich in foods that are high in antioxidants and moderate calorie intake. Studies in areas with a long life expectancy, like the Mediterranean and Okinawa, have shown the importance of a balanced diet in ensuring a longer, disease-free life. Heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and some types of cancer can all be reduced by eating a diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Berry and leafy greens are two examples of colorful fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants that can help fight the oxidative stress that might result in chronic diseases. More and more studies demonstrate how food affects mental health. Foods high in nutrients can improve mood, improve cognitive ability, and lower the risk of mental illnesses including sadness and anxiety. Omega-3 fatty acids, which are present in fatty fish and flaxseeds, are wellknown for improving brain function. A balanced diet and portion control are crucial for successful weight management and a decreased risk of obesity-related disorders like diabetes, heart disease, and some types of cancer The cardiovascular system benefits from regular exercise. Both weight loss and weight maintenance can benefit from regular exercise. Improved endurance and energy levels result from increased oxygen and nutrition supply to the body's cells. Exercise may improve the immune system's capacity to fight against infections and diseases. Maintaining weight loss requires exercise. It promotes calorie burning and muscular growth, which can help stop weight gain following successful weight loss. By Rida-E-Zahra, Grade XI

An honest review on the LGS canteen by iraj haris Next is our white sauce pasta. Basically another hit or miss. Even though the sauce tastes good they add too much water to it which ruins the vibe. Now let’s come to our favorite: FRIES! They are very good and the toppings make it so much better, but nowadays they are a bit undercooked but otherwise smash. Breadstuff Sandwich, Paratha Roll and Shawarma all can be really dry with no sauce especially the paratha roll. Even though the chicken is well cooked it needs a bit more spice. Surprisingly the stuffing inside the sandwich tastes like Chinese. For shawarma either the sauce is too much or too less but the sauce tastes good overall. Personally I’d only eat these three items if I was starving and had no other option. The burger is another hit or miss. The sauce is occasionally good but the chicken is either overcooked or undercooked. Please make it ‘just right.’ Food and Health #31 Biryani Pasta Fries Burger

Travel and Lifestyle #33 The Rise of Binge-watching “Just one more episode…” , I said to myself as I clicked the “continue watching” button. How many times has that thought raced through your mind in the odd hours of the night as you claw through a series ? Ever-present as it seems, it wasn’t always like this. Until roughly 2012, an episode would air at a set time once a week, with plenty of commercial breaks. Viewers may have an opportunity to re-watch if they taped or TiVo-ed the episode, if it was released on DVD, or if the show was syndicated or aired in re-runs. Then, arrived binge-watching. Binge-watching is the practice of watching multiple episodes or an entire season of a television series, often in one sitting or over a short period. This behaviour is typically associated with streaming services and the availability of entire series for on-demand viewing. Let’s explore the rise of this lifestyle trend. The new era began when Netflix, in 2013, released all episodes of the political drama House of Cards at the same time, rather than on a weekly basis. Factors contributing to it include the rise of high-speed internet, proliferation of smart phones and devices, and emergence of on-demand streaming services. Consequently, “Peak TV”, an era of dramatic long-form television that earned critical acclaim following 1999 with The Sopranos, became mainstream, with entire nations enjoying complex character studies such as The Crown, Mad Men, The Americans, Breaking Bad etc. and revisiting old classics such as The Office or Seinfeld. Recently, the bane of binge-watching has come to light, with the barrage of low-quality entertainment meant to serve as ‘background noise’ and services removing original content from their libraries, effectively having them cease to exist, but enough about the effect on the media itself, what about the people consuming it ? by Gulwash Malik

The negative impact of binge-watching are in multitudes. The increased digitization of our lives has worsened attention spans and screen addiction, to the extent that all people between the ages of 8 to 28, spend 44.5 hours per week using technology. This damages sleep cycles, mental health, diet and work/educational performance, according to a University of Texas study. Binge-watching can lead to addiction. Dr. Renee Carr, a clinical psychologist, said, “The neuronal pathways that cause heroin and intimacy addictions are the same as an addiction to binge watching. Your body does not discriminate against pleasure. It can become addicted to any activity or substances that consistently produces dopamine.” The sedentary lifestyle of binge-watching, including sitting for extended periods of time, cause blood clots, heart disease, cancer and more than 3 hours of watching may even cause premature death. It may cheapen a shows’ value, as storylines blend into one another and lose impact. As Lost creator Damon Lindelof said: “This idea of anticipation. That Christmas morning feeling… doesn’t exist in binge culture.” In conclusion, binge-watching early on was a convenience for busy viewers who had no time to tape or follow shows, and introduced a higher form of entertainment. Now, commercialism has diminished quality and the experience, as well as ravaging mental health. In my opinion, adjusting to a more balanced form of watching, with scheduled watch-times, viewing television while on an exercise machine or with healthy snacks, and seeking out more educational and less addictive content, would be an effective remedy. This discipline empowers viewers to savor TV, rather than enabling TV to exploit the viewers, while also elevating the enjoyment of additional work and outdoor activities. It transforms TV into a source of flavor and enrichment, rather than a tyrant over people's lives, as addiction tends to be, and restores the thrills of television to life. As Julia Child aptly noted: Travel and Lifestyle #34 Life itself is the proper binge We know people binge-watch. 73% of Americans confess to binge-watching, with an average binge session lasting three hours and eight minutes. Among millennials, 90%, and 87% of Gen Z, admit to bingewatching. Additionally, 40% of individuals from these age groups binge-watch an average of six TV episodes in one go. Benefits of binge-watching include wider choice, immersive entertainment, stress relief, and connecting with friends over shows. There is wider access to documentaries and educational content, which previously may only have been interesting to viewers if they made critic’s end-of-year lists or won prestigious awards, such as 1994’s sports docudrama Hoop Dreams or the 9- hour long, black-and-white 1985’s French Holocaust film Shoah. It may make tv shows more enjoyable, as longform entertainment such as Stranger Things and Black Mirror function better as extended short film and don’t fit into a cookie-cutter, episodic formula.

By Rayan Irfan Grade XI The passion for sports is one that is shared globally, especially among young children who dream of being professionals in their favorite sport one day. These young souls envision themselves in the place of the players who they watch on the TV screen. Unfortunately, only the smallest number of them actually reach the big stage. 70% of children quit sports in their teens. Most of these children don’t even have much of a choice in this decision. They quit because of either financial constraints or parent behaviors. Most parents have the stereotype that sports are merely a hobby, not a viable career. Their prevailing mindset favors traditional occupations such as medicine, engineering or business thus they overlook the potential of a career in sports. These parents pressure their children to put their all into academics rather than spending any time on sports because they see no worthwhile future for their children in any other way. It is essential for this mindset to evolve so more talented individuals can showcase their abilities and eventually earn a well-deserved opportunity at the highest level of competition. Laid-back or uninvolved parents may attend games occasionally, but make no other effort showing limited interest in their child's sports activities, or offer minimal encouragement. While some children may thrive with autonomy, others crave more parental involvement and support. Parents should find the right balance between allowing independence and offering guidance and support. A child with an uninvolved parent might feel neglected or unsupported, impacting their self-esteem and motivation to participate in sports. Sometimes the parents really want to support their children in their athletic endeavors but fear what society would think of them. Addressing such problems requires a shift in societal attitudes toward sporting careers. Recognizing and challenging this stereotype is essential for creating a positive and supportive sports environment for young athletes. Sports #38 Beyondthe Sideline

Certain athletes who are now known by millions around the world were stopped by their parents from playing sports in their childhood. Sadio Mane, a Senegalese footballer, who previously played for Liverpool FC and currently plays for FC Bayern Munich was told by his parents to not try to go professional as football was a waste of time. Another footballer, a legend of the game, Ronaldo Nazario was told by his mother to focus only on his academics when he was young. Although these players and many others might’ve secretly pursued the sport and later convinced their parents, tons of others give up when shut down by their parents. Just imagine if those who quit because of their parents continued their sport and became a big name like Mane and Ronaldo Nazario. Thus, parents should keep their mind open towards their children having a career in sports and act more involved in their journey helping them reach their level best. Sports organizations can play a significant role in encouraging parental involvement. Offering educational programs for parents about healthy ways to support their child's sports journey and fostering a culture that values both competition and personal development can contribute to a more inclusive and understanding sports environment. The media is another way to improve parental involvement in their child’s sports journey. Movies and TV shows regarding sports should show the parents supporting their children with a balanced approach rather than showing extremes like over-pressuring the kids or not caring at all. - Sadio Mane Sports #39 Theythoughtplayingfootball wouldbea wasteof timeand theynever thought i would beaprofessional footballer.

Should Transgender Athletes Compete in Women’s Sports? By Areeba Ussam XI Transgender and non-binary is a new concept that has made its way into our society today and is a trending concept among teenagers and adults all over the world. Obviously just like any new concept affecting the lifestyle of humans, the concept of multiple genders has had its impact on all things including sports. Most women and men’s sports are categorized by gender and the reason for that is that the female and male species are biologically different. The stamina and physique of a man, on average, is not equivalent to that of a woman and that is a fact. This whole concept is disrupted when a transgender is competing alongside. Women have had a long history with sports. They have had to fight for the right to equal opportunity in sports. The reason women are allowed to play and compete in various sports today is because of them. All these efforts are suspended with the inclusion of transgender women in women’s sports as they are biologically still men competing with women. This way any man could compete in women’s sports and inevitably win in them because they “identify” as a woman. Like in the Olympics, trans athletes were allowed to compete in women’s sports in 2004. This set back biological women to achieve victory and equal competence. Needless to say, the inclusion of trans athletes in women’s sports is prejudiced and unfair. They should have no place in women’s sports, but this doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be allowed to compete at all. Transgender athletes should be given their own separate opportunities in sports, such where they could compete against equal competitors. This conclusion would allow non-binary individuals to compete and participate in sports, while a fair competition is conducted between biological women. “ Sports #40

This is a book with purpose, it's meant to evoke strong emotion, leave a lasting impression, and I believe it is done flawlessly. It will have you rethinking your understanding of concepts such as freedom of choice, and the legacy you want to leave behind. I must add however, that this book is fundamentally about love, and the longing to be understood. It follows the story of a French girl in 1714 forced to live a simple unassuming life, to die as she had lived, to become a good wife and a caring mother just like the women before her. But at 23 when the church bells start to ring she flees into the forest praying to every spirit, every god that she can, but the only thing that answers is the darkness. In her desperation she is forced to play a game. The shadows grant her immortality for as long as she wishes in exchange for her soul. The catch to her getting to choose her own life however is centuries of being cursed to be forgotten. For a book about a girl who only lives in moments, forgotten the second heads are turned, this story is quite the opposite. “The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue” is a fantasy novel by V. E. Schwab. We witness how time moves around Addie and how she adapts to the change, we see her find new ways to leave her mark on history and learn to maneuver around her curse, we see her learn to make life bearable through art and books, with the only constant being her and the shadow, that is until she discovers a boy in the bookstore. Even though this book is not written in first person the author's wonderful storytelling and precise descriptionn makes it feel almost personal. It is fairly long and sometimes slow paced however the writing feels almost lyrical. Its main selling point is the author's ability to tap into relatable themes on love, loneliness and hope and almost makes them feel less melancholic. Throughout the book you are pushed back and forth through different time periods but as we jump the writing adjusts itself accordingly making it easy to keep track. This book very quickly became a personal favorite and I recommend it to everyone who asks, yes even you with the ever growing pile of unread books at home, I suggest you put this one on top. By Humayun Saadullah Grade X Books and Movies #45 “Today, you have robbed yourself of the advantages that a hearing of this sort gives to someone who is under arrest” Franz Kafka’s nightmarish catalog is often defined by one singular book, his magnum opus : ‘The Metamorphosis.’ A novella so renowned that it simply overshadows everything else that Kafka ever published. The book undoubtedly has cemented itself as one of the greatest pieces of fiction produced in the 20th century. However, in doing so, it has brushed aside so many other works by one of the most celebrated authors in the history of Literature. One of these works is ‘The Trial,’ the plot is simple at face value, Josef K, a morally ambiguous senior bank clerk, is arrested and interrogated on a random morning. Why? No one tells him. What follows is a gripping tale, of a man who’s entire life has turned upside down in an instant, dealing with a murky organization neither him nor the reader fully understand. The novella features the dystopian, oppressive insanity so characteristic of Kafka’s works throughout. Showcasing a man driven down a spiral of lunacy, desperation and anxiety by the sheer absurdity of his situation, recoiling and losing control of his life in the process. Within the span of 200 or so pages Kafka takes the reader through smoky tenements and flats that reek of pure misery, introduces crooked characters who always seem to never be exactly who they seem like and paints a perfect picture of desperation, so masterfully immersing you in all of it, that by the halfway point I was so absorbed in the plot that i had to take a second to step back and process that I was invested in a trial the nature of which i barely even understood. By the end of it all Kafka leaves the reader in a state of awe with an ending chapter that seems to confront the reader and lays bare the harsh truth of Kafka’s world, a splintered world that is engrossing as much as it is grim and morose, becoming a vessel for some of the author’s most interesting philosophies. In conclusion, ‘The Trial’ is a work I'd recommend to anyone who’s interested in reading dystopian fiction or even anyone who’d like to have an easy introduction to the catalog of Franz Kafka and understand just what makes him one of the most iconic authors of all time.
