This is a story about my favorite childhood memory, which was my younger brother’s first birthday party. It all
started back in 2007. My name is Sara and I was four years old. At that time, I was still the last-born in my
family. Never have I ever thought that I would get a younger brother but everything changed when I noticed my
mom’s belly growing bigger.
“Mom, why are your belly bloating so much?” while rubbing her stomach, I asked her with big curiosity in my
small head. Well, a four-year-old kid would not really understand much with scientific explanations, so my mom
told me that she will be having a smaller copy of me. I was shocked and my puzzled reaction was really obvious.
My older brother and sister guffawed and their laughter echoed through the living room because my face was
really funny, they said.
Day by day, my mother’s stomach grew bigger and bigger. There would be times where my father brought my
mom to the hospital. Sometimes, I would feel anxious and worried about my mother’s health but she always
smiles and said that she was okay. One day, I woke up and found out that I was left alone at my house with my
older brother. “Mom is at the hospital, she is okay, so do not worry too much.” He convinced me since I started
to bawl my eyes out.
The next day, my father brought me to the hospital and he said that he had a big surprise for me and he
asked me to close my eyes as he carried me into my mother’s ward. “Ta-da! Meet your small copy, Amier!” My
mom said cheerfully while holding a small, tiny and sweet baby boy in her arms. Not going to lie, I was really
happy at that time since my Amier was very adorable.
“A happy family is but an
earlier heaven.”
– George Bernard Shaw
Time moved swiftly onward and Amier turned one year old. My older sister asked my parents to hold a
birthday party to celebrate our youngest sibling’s first year with us. Since I was very young, I only watched my
family members doing the preparation. As the leader of our family, my father prepared a budget for the grocery
list. It was really essential as the birthday party would be involving a lot of guests, including our extended family,
who would come far from the city to join the party. As the messaging technology still had not been developed at
that time, we used the traditional way to send out the invitations by cards. My older brother’s role was to make
invitation cards for our neighbors and friends and he received some help from my sister.
Oh, I still remember my brother nagged for thirty minutes straight because I unwittingly shredded the cards he
made into pieces. His face which was contorted with rage was engraved into my mind until now. At that time, I
did not know that the paper copies that my older siblings were making were supposed to be the invitation cards,
so I crumbled the papers and shredded them. Thank goodness my father quickly came to save me from my
brother’s and sister’s anger. It was so funny. I also still remember that my father took me to a supermarket to buy
the grocery that mom needed to cook for our beloved guests. For me, the whole process to prepare for the party
was a momentous occasion for me since it was my first time facing my siblings’ anger and I could say that it was
my first time going to a supermarket. The preparation process took two weeks to be completed.
Finally, the day that I had been waiting for arrived. The guests started to arrive early in the morning, so I tried
to help my brother to welcome the guests into our house. My mom dressed me and my sister in white gown and
we also wore a crystal tiara on our head. Our aunts and uncles were so excited to see Amier, who already
learned how to walk at that time. It was awesome. Everyone immersed themselves in an atmosphere of gaiety. I
also played with my cousins and friends from my kindergarten.
It was time for the meals to be served. My mom served her specially cooked chicken soup for the guests. Not
long after that, my father arrived with a big box on his hand. I was too curious at that time and I quickly dashed to
my father. However, things did not turn out very well as my movements caused my father to trip over his own
feet. The big box also fell, which caused the surprise inside it to be broken too.
“Oh no! What are we going to do now? ” My mother screamed anxiously. Everyone stared at me and my eyes
started to well up. It was a big cake, made specially for my one-year-old brother. Thank god, at that time, my
aunt also brought a cake as a gift for Amier, so my mom just used that cake as a replacement. Maybe it was
indeed a destined coincidence. Everyone was happy and the party ended without any other meaningful
memories with my family.
