Learning Target: I can compare and contrast two or more
characters, settings, or events in a story, drawing on specific
details in the text.

Background of this Story:
In some countries around the world the government is

called a dictatorship. In a dictatorship, one person or a small
group of people have complete control of the country. In many
cases the military enforces the control. If a person does not
follow the rules, they may be arrested, threatened, scared, or
tortured. The citizens of that country are not allowed to talk or
act against the dictatorship. A person can be rewarded if they
tell the dictatorship about other people who are against the
government.

system of government in the story affect Pedro, his
family, and the citizens it governs?

World War II and
the Holocaust

Learning Target: I can provide a summary of the text that
includes the main ideas and key details, as well as other
important information.

Summary of the article:
The article “World War II and the Holocaust” shows

how Adolf Hitler set out to rule the world. He came into power
in 1993 and began to persuade people that jews are bad.
Starting in 1941, Jewish people were killed by the natzizs. In
these camps over 6 million died. He joined forces with Japan
and Italy. When the Axis bombed Pearl Harbor on December
7 1941, the United States entered the war and fought against
the Axis powers until World war 2 when the war ended.

Background of this Story:
“For centuries, the Star of David was a symbol of Jewish

pride. But during World War II, Nazis used the Star to
segregate and terrorize the Jewish people. Except in
Denmark. When Nazi soldiers occupied his country, King
Christian X of Denmark committed himself to keeping all
Danes safe from harm. The bravery of the Danes and their
king has inspired many legends. The most enduring is the
legend of the yellow star, which symbolizes the loyalty and
fearless spirit of the king and his people.”

Chapter 2

How does this picture relate to the chapter?

My Thoughts:

One way the picture is related to the chapter is on page 11-13 Annemarie tells her little
sister a story about a King and Queen that had a beautiful daughter named Kirsti and there
are a King and Queen in the picture! Another way the picture relates to the story is when
the soldier asks why the King doesn’t have a bodyguard and then the man said that all of
Denmark was his bodyguard. The picture reminds me of that because there is the king and
then someone that looks like a citizen looking like they are bowing to the king.

Learning Target: I can determine a theme of a story from details in the text,
including how characters in a story respond to challenges.

Chapter 4

How does this picture relate to the chapter?

One way the picture relates to the story is when the Tivoli garden was burned.
Kirtsi’s mother said it was fireworks on her birthday but the Danes blow up the

Learning Target: I can quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text

Chapter 6

How does this picture relate to the chapter?

My Thoughts:

In Number the Stars, Chapter 6 It shows a box of cigarettes and asks how the picture is released to the
story. One way the picture is similar to the story is when Annemarie’s dad is on the phone and she
overhears that her Uncle is giving her dad some cigarettes. On page 53, Annemarie says “ Cigarettes were
the thing that papa missed, the way Mama missed coffea. This means the Papa was addicted to Coffee.
So to sum it up, the picture relates to the chapter because her dad misses smoking.

Learning Target: I can quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text
says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

Chapter 12-13

How does this text relate to Number the stars and
particularly Annemarie in chapter 13?

My Thoughts:
The Man In The Red Bandanna and Number The Stars are
similar to each other in any ways. One way they relate is that
AnneMarie and Wells showed bravery in scary situation. For
example, AnneMarie had to be brave whenever a soldier

confronted her. Wells ran up flaming stairs and saved
peoples life even though it was a choice and he was risking
his life for others. One other example is that they both saved
peoples life. If they had not been brave many people would

had died. AnneMarie and Wells were very brave.
