Introduction
What can change color and is in the reptile group? It’s a
chameleon! Learn more about the mysterious chameleon in
this book.
Chapter 1 - Where do chameleons live?
Chameleons live in many places including Asia, Europe,
and Africa. Most chameleons are found in rainforests. Other
chameleons live in grasslands, deserts, and mountains. Most
chameleons live in trees and spend as little time possibly on
the ground. A lot of chameleons live in Africa.
Chapter 2 - The colorful body
The body is a wonderful part of the chameleon!
Chameleons can be as big as your thumb or “27” long.
Chameleons have special cells under their skin to make them
change color. Green, dark brown, and yellow are common
chameleon color. The tail of a chameleon is used for balance.
The eyes of a chameleon can move separately.
Chapter 3
People are wrong about chameleons in many ways.
People think chameleons change color to blend into their
surroundings, but that is not true. Chameleons actually
change color because of their mood(anger or fear),
temperature, and light. Chameleons can also change color to
communicate with each other.
Chapter 4
Chameleons eat stuff like other lizards such as flies, ants,
and beetles. To catch food they have a suction cup at the
end of the tongue. Large chameleons can even eat other
chameleons! Chameleons get water from rain drops
dropping off of leaves.
Conclusion
Clearly, the chameleon is an interesting animal to us. We
now know there is about 150 chameleon types and more are
being discovered! Remember, when someone tells you that
a chameleon changes color because of its surroundings, this
is not true! The mood and temperature are the real reasons
why they change colors.
