• Balance is primarily related to expenses incurred during
the 2017 and 2018 regional conferences.
• The expenses were paid by Corporate Office, so there are
no outstanding obligations to external creditors.
• A paydown plan was developed in 2020 to repay the
sorority and we are on target to repay the sorority the full
amount.
• Paydown plan focuses on paying all obligations of the
current administration, setting aside $100K for the
incoming regional director and using the remainder of
NAR funds to repay the sorority.
• The NAR Finance Team interprets this question to mean
will our strong financial position jeopardize our 501c7
nonprofit status.
• Nonprofits are allowed to generate profits.
• 501c7 guidelines state:
o A 501c7 must be primarily supported by dues,
fees, charges, or other funds paid by members.
That said, 501c7 donations are permissible. A
501c7 social club may receive up to 35% of its
gross receipts, including investment income, from
sources outside its membership while retaining
tax-exempt status.
• The majority of the region’s revenue is from registration
fees and other funds paid by members, so we are within
the 35% guideline.

• We pay taxes on ALL unrelated business income. The
amount is calculated by the Corporate Office based on
our financial reports and we are invoiced for the tax

from sources outside of our membership, such as:
o Corporate Sponsorship
o Vendor Fees
o Advertising Revenue
• We file monthly reports with the Corporate Office, so our
revenue and expenses are closely monitored and all
required tax reporting (e.g., annual 990 filing) is handled
by the Corporate Office based on our reports.
