does not matter whether you are a large,
medium, or small chapter. Nor does it matter
whether you are a high-ranking officer in your
chapter or the Soror who quietly and effectively
makes a difference regardless of her title. What is
most important is that things are better because of you.
The Leading With A High Note Awards Handbook is your guide to let us know
what is better and why. And it will be especially helpful when you show us
how. You have an opportunity to support all of us with your thoughtful and
detailed award entries. Your entries can serve as an inspiration to chapters
and individual sorors. They remind us that “If they can do it; we can too.”
The award categories reflect the Exemplifying Excellence Through Sustainable
Service programs. We will celebrate these EXCELLENCE Programs by
recognizing the outstanding work of our members.
Please read this handbook thoroughly. Once you have finished reading, get to
work in sharing your stories. I encourage you to submit your award entries.
Who knows? You may already be a winner! I look forward to celebrating you
with fun uplifting moments throughout the conference that highlight your
achievements.
In doing so, we will come together to sing the praises of all the award

AWARDS PROCESS
AND
ELIGIBLITY GUIDELINES
The Regional Director appoints the Awards Committee. Sorors from graduate and undergraduate chapters
volunteer to serve as judges. The committee, along with the judges, will meet approximately one month
before the Regional Conference to review all entries (except entries for the Exhibit/Display Award) and
judge the submissions. The Regional Director will submit the names of chapters/individuals that are
ineligible to receive awards. Judges selected during the awards book judging will perform an onsite awards
selection of entries for the Exhibit/Display Award.
Most awards will be presented during the Awards Gala. Golden and Silver Soror of the Year awards will
be presented at the Diamond, Golden, Silver Celebration. All undergraduate awards and the Graduate
Advisor of the Year award will be presented during the Undergraduate Celebration. All International
Awards will be presented during a Plenary Session.
The types of awards to be presented will be determined by the Regional Director in consultation with the
Awards Committee, based on the level of funding available. Awards may be plaques, certificates,
medallions, or other forms of recognition.
Chapters must submit by electronic submission for all categories.
Entering chapters must have 100% membership in the Educational Advancement Foundation (EAF).
Chapters under penalty or suspension will not be eligible for awards. For individual awards, a
nominated soror must be financial with her chapter and not under penalty or suspension.
All the chapter’s end-of-the-year reports must be submitted by the reporting deadline.
Undergraduates must have submitted the last semester grade report to be eligible for awards.
A North Atlantic Region Award Entry Form must be submitted with each award entry.
Only one submission per award category is allowed per chapter.
Designate chapter size for all graduate submissions (as of December 2020):
o SMALL: 1-50 members
o MEDIUM: 51-140 members
o LARGE: 140+ members

A project undertaken by two or more chapters must be submitted as a group entry and cannot be
submitted as an individual chapter activity. The primary submitting chapter will receive the award
trophy. The C. Edith Booker Collaboration is the only award where two trophies are given.
Entry must conform to the guidelines outlined for each award.
Entry should include only activities, accomplishments and programs undertaken in the program
evaluation period, January 1, 2020 – December 31, 2020. Ongoing programs can highlight activities
from previous years, but should focus on the period of evaluation of January 1, 2020 – December 31,
2020.
Please redact any soror’s personal/private information, i.e. financial card numbers.
Chapters must pay a $50.00 registration fee to be eligible to submit an entry for judging. The Awards
Submission Fee form and fee (pg. 8) are due January 8, 2021 and must be sent to:

All submissions must be electronic this year. The benefits of the eAward Books are that they save on
printing and shipping costs and decrease the amount of time spent printing and placing material in binders.
The eAward entries are computer generated and must adhere to the stated guidelines. Please be sure
to adhere to page limits! Judges will review submissions and will judge using the Award Committee
Evaluation Summary Form (used for ALL award entries). Documentation such as news clippings, articles,
calendars, letters on official letterhead, citations, awards, pictures, event programs, etc. must be scanned
in to the eAward book. Do not include any links to additional information; they will not be considered. ALL
submissions must have the following information included in the naming convention and on the e-
cover page:

CHAPTER OF THE YEAR
The focus is on overall chapter operations, not just program activities. The narrative must be no more than
three (3) pages, double-spaced for each section. Arrange sections according to the following: Chapter
Management, Implementation of International and Local Sorority Programs, and Chapter Growth. For
undergraduate chapter submissions, a signed letter of recommendation from the Graduate Advisor and a
signed copy of the most recent grade report showing the chapter’s cumulative G.P.A. are required. Include
photographs, newspaper clippings, programs and related materials as appropriate, ensuring that they are
labeled, and dated. Use footnotes to document information.
Chapter Operations: Identify chapter goals, provide evaluations to show measures of success, outline
planning efforts, and show communication(s) to chapter. Demonstrate efficient and effective chapter
operations. Documents could include (not limited to): Chapter/Executive Committee meeting minutes,
meeting agendas, officer orientations, printed event programs, Standards evaluations, standing rules,
delegate reports, chapter budget, Strategic Plan, Risk Management plan, etc. .
Soror to Soror Relations: Show social activities that foster sisterly relations and joint activities with
other local/regional Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Undergraduate and Graduate chapters.
Punctuality in Chapter Reporting: Provide documentation (letter or e-mail with date(s) of submittal)
for submission of all required reports by the deadlines specified.
Section 2 - Implementation of International and Local Sorority Programs
Effective Use of Programs: Describe programs of service, strategies/activities for achieving program
objectives and measures of success. Detail chapter activities to accomplish the overall goals of the
International Program initiatives.
Joint Chapter and Collaborative Efforts with Other Groups: Describe joint chapter activities,
involvement with other Greek letter organizations, and coordination of efforts with other community
or civic groups that reflect service to all mankind.
Conference Participation: Provide the delegate strength and actual number of registered chapter
attendees for the Boule, Regional, Leadership, Cluster Conferences and Undergraduate Round-Up.
Visibility and External Recognition: Detail use of the media; identify college, civic and/or community
awards and recognition. Documents could include press releases, Ivy Leaf, and newspaper articles.
Graduate Chapters demonstrate commitment to membership: recruit, reclaim and retain by describing
recruitment activities (includes MIP), reclamation strategies, retention programs and activities to promote
transitioning from undergraduate chapters to graduate chapters. Include results of the activities in terms
of success and chapter evaluation results. Undergraduate Chapters demonstrate commitment to
membership by describing activities that encourage transition to graduate membership. Documents for
Section 3 could include: Event program(s) and pictures, flyers, and surveys.

BASILEUS OF THE YEAR
*Undergraduate chapter submissions require a signed letter of recommendation
from the Graduate Advisor and a signed copy of the most recent grade report
showing the chapter’s cumulative GPA.
1. Chapters submitting for this award must also submit an entry for Chapter of the Year. Entries must
be electronic.
2. Submit a summary statement or letter of recommendation from the chapter describing the reasons
for nominating your Basileus for the Basileus of the Year Award. This document must be signed by
the Grammateus of the chapter and should be no more than three (3) pages typed, double-spaced..
The following types of information must be included:
Unique and/or outstanding contribution to the chapter as Basileus
Leadership qualities: Describe the Basileus’ ability to utilize skills to get the work of the chapter
accomplished, to solve problems, to respond to requests for feedback in a timely manner, and
to model sisterly relationships to promote chapter growth and development
Leadership in promoting and accomplishing sorority-wide initiatives, including the
International platform goals
Offices and other leadership roles held in the chapter
Availability for sorority purposes: Attendance and cooperative participation in Sorority
meetings including Boule, Leadership, Regional, Undergraduate Roundup (if applicable) and
Cluster Conferences
Also include information detailing academic and professional background/recognition, outstanding
contributions to the community (current and prior years: religious, political, cultural, civic,
educational) or any other reasons for your nomination.
Include supporting documentation such as, newspaper clippings, letters, or copies of awards. Be
sure they are labeled, and dated. Names of sorors featured in newspaper and magazine articles
must be highlighted. The name of the publication, headline and date must be included as a part of
the documentation.
3. Indicate the name of the soror submitting the entry.
4. For Undergraduate chapter submissions, a signed letter of recommendation from the Graduate
Advisor is required.

OFFICER OF THE YEAR
* Basilei will only be recognized under submissions for Basileus of the Year. Submissions for
Basilei must not be submitted for Officer of the Year.
This award is given in recognition of a Chapter Officer (not the Basileus) who has initiated a
new program or who has made a major contribution to the chapter that has improved and/or
increased the efficiency of the chapter. Only ONE award will be given for this category.
1. Submit a summary statement or letter of recommendation from the chapter describing
your nominee. The narrative should be no more than three (3) typed pages double-spaced
and signed by the Basileus of the chapter.
2. The following information must be included:
A description of the unique and/or outstanding contribution (s) to the chapter.
Major reasons for nominating the Soror for the award
Availability for sorority purposes: Attendance and cooperative participation in
Sorority meetings including Boule, Leadership, Regional, Undergraduate Roundup
(if applicable) and Cluster Conferences
3. Scan in supporting documentation, such as newspaper clippings, letters, or copies of
awards related to the contribution of the Soror. Be sure that they are labeled and dated.
The name of the publication, headline and date must be included as a part of the

NEW SOROR OF THE YEAR
The award is given in recognition of a New Soror who has been a member of Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Inc. for less than five (5) years and may or may not be an officer or
committee chair, but who has made outstanding contributions to the chapter and the
sorority. Only ONE award will be given for this category.
1. Submit a summary statement or letter of recommendation from the chapter
describing your nominee. The narrative should be no more than three (3) pages
typed double-spaced and signed by the Basileus of the chapter.
2. Categories of supporting information that may be submitted:

This award is given in recognition of a Golden Soror who is a significant contributor to the
chapter, the sorority, and deserving of recognition. Indicate the name and chapter office of

SILVER STAR SOROR OF THE YEAR
It is given in recognition of a Silver Star Soror who is a significant contributor to the
chapter and the sorority and deserving of recognition. Indicate the name and chapter

NELLIE MAY QUANDER LEADERSHIP AWARD
“All believed that our vows to remain true to Alpha Kappa Alpha were not idle words.”
~Soror Nellie May Quander
The Nellie May Quander Leadership Award will be presented to one graduate and one undergraduate
Soror who is making a major impact on Alpha Kappa Alpha and her community. The Soror will exemplify
the strength, wisdom, courage, diligence, and commitment to excellence, professional achievement,
leadership and service that characterized the life of the First Supreme Basileus of Alpha Kappa Alpha.
Alpha Kappa Alpha’s first Supreme Basileus, Soror Nellie M. Quander was inspired by the vows she made
to Alpha Kappa Alpha. She did what was necessary to ensure Alpha Kappa Alpha continued in perpetuity.
As “the only one there to oppose the idea of an entirely new sorority,” Soror Nellie cringed as she listened
to AKA members voice plans “to shatter it (AKA) to bits.” Soror Nellie with deep reverence, assumed
custody of the Founders’ vision and incorporated Alpha Kappa Alpha, effectively enshrining the ideals and
creating a national incubator to perpetuate them. As Chief Incorporator and Basileus of Alpha Chapter,
her major accomplishments included writing the preamble to the AKA Constitution, funding the first Alpha
Kappa Alpha Scholarship, expanding AKA by personally chartering chapters, instituting early policies and
guidelines and presiding over the first two national conventions. She was a teacher in the District of
Columbia Public School system for 11 years and she was a descendant of “America’s oldest, consistently
documented African-American family.”1
This award will be given to the Graduate and Undergraduate Soror who, with passion and commitment,
is a testament to the ideals and principles that guided Soror Nellie’s life of service and love of Alpha Kappa
Alpha. Submissions should include a narrative of not more than three (3) pages double-spaced. Be as
specific as possible, describing the qualities and activities that make the Soror deserving of this award.
Scan in photographs, newspaper clippings, programs and related materials as appropriate, ensuring that
they are labeled and dated. The name, headline and date of the publication must be included as part of
the documentation.
Your submission should also include the following information:
A one-page letter of recommendation from the chapter, signed by the Basileus or Anti-
Basileus (in addition to the three-page narrative)
Academic and professional background
Present endeavors
Unique qualities of this Soror
Outstanding leadership contribution to Alpha Kappa Alpha

EXEMPLARY CITIZEN AWARD
This award is given in recognition of the efforts of the Soror who is a significant, steady
contributor to the chapter, the sorority, and the community at large. This Soror is making an
impact in the community through socially conscious and civic minded action. Indicate the name
and chapter office of the Soror completing the statement. Only ONE award will be given for this
category.
1. Submit a summary statement or letter of recommendation from the chapter describing your
nominee. The narrative should be no more than three (3) pages typed and double-spaced and
must be signed by the Basileus.
2. Categories of supporting information that may be submitted:

SPOTLIGHT PUBLIC RELATIONS AWARD
This award will be presented to one Graduate Chapter and one Undergraduate Chapter.
This award will be given in recognition of a Chapter who has effectively used the media to put a
spotlight on Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The chapter shall demonstrate that they received
outstanding media coverage that positively promoted and documented their programs, events and
members.
Submit a summary statement from the chapter indicating why this Chapter is deserving of this award.
Indicate the name and chapter officer of soror completing the statement. The narrative must be no
more than three (3) pages typed and double-spaced.

This award will be presented to one Graduate Chapter and one Undergraduate Chapter
Pretty Is As Pretty Does” is a phrase that reminds us that it is our actions, or what we do, that make us
beautiful. Chapters make positive impacts in their communities and on their campuses. This award
will be given to the chapter that has consistently done beautiful acts for others and kind deeds for its
members.
To be considered for this award, chapters should submit a summary statement from the chapter
indicating why this chapter is deserving of this award. Indicate the name and chapter officer of the
soror completing the statement. The narrative must be no more than three (3) pages typed and
double-spaced.

The North Atlantic Region J.P. Morgan Chase Financial Award is being sponsored on behalf of JPMorgan
Chase. JPMorgan Chase is one of the oldest financial institutions in the United States with a history dating
back over 200 years. Making the economy work for more people is a key focus for JPMorgan Chase. As
part of that mission JPMC launched Advancing Black Pathways—an initiative that builds on its existing
efforts to help the black community chart stronger paths towards economic success and empowerment.
J.P. Morgan Chase will award $500 (five hundred dollars) to four (4) Undergraduate Chapters and $1,000
(one thousand dollars) to three (3) Graduate Chapters (One Small Chapter, One Medium Chapter and
One Large Chapter).

CHAPTER OF THE YEAR
The focus is on overall chapter operations, not just program activities. This award must be submitted as
an eAward. The narrative must be no more than three (3) pages typed and double-spaced for each
section. Arrange sections according to the following: Chapter Management, Implementation of
International and Local Sorority Programs, and Chapter Growth. For undergraduate chapter
submissions, a signed letter of recommendation from the Graduate Advisor and a signed copy of the
most recent grade report showing the chapter’s cumulative G.P.A. are required. Include photographs,
newspaper clippings, programs and related materials as appropriate, ensuring that they are labeled and
, dated. and securely attached. For eAwards, Uuse footnotes to document information. The name,
headline and date of the publication must be included as part of the documentation.
Chapter Operations: Identify chapter goals, provide evaluations to show measures of success,
outline planning efforts, and show communication(s) to chapter. Demonstrate efficient and

Undergraduate chapter submissions require a signed letter of recommendation from the
Graduate Advisor and a signed copy of the most recent grade report showing the chapter’s

The Graduate Advisor of the Undergraduate Chapter must submit a signed letter of support for
the nominee. A current, e-transcript must be included with the submission. The
nominee’s scholastic cumulative average must be at least 3.0 on a scale of 4.0.

this Soror should be Miss AKA. Indicate the name and chapter office of the person completing
the statement. The Basileus must sign the statement. The narrative must be no more than

NELLIE MAY QUANDER
LEADERSHIP AWARD

The Nellie May Quander Leadership Award will be presented to one graduate and one undergraduate
Soror who is making a major impact on Alpha Kappa Alpha and her community. The Soror will exemplify
the strength, wisdom, courage, diligence, and commitment to excellence, professional achievement,
leadership and service that characterized the life of the First Supreme Basileus of Alpha Kappa Alpha.
Alpha Kappa Alpha’s first Supreme Basileus, Soror Nellie M. Quander was inspired by the vows she made
to Alpha Kappa Alpha. She did what was necessary to ensure Alpha Kappa Alpha continued in perpetuity.
As “the only one there to oppose the idea of an entirely new sorority,” Soror Nellie cringed as she listened
to AKA members voice plans “to shatter it (AKA) to bits.” Soror Nellie with deep reverence, assumed
custody of the Founders’ vision and incorporated Alpha Kappa Alpha, effectively enshrining the ideals and
creating a national incubator to perpetuate them. As Chief Incorporator and Basileus of Alpha Chapter,
her major accomplishments included writing the preamble to the AKA Constitution, funding the first Alpha
Kappa Alpha Scholarship, expanding AKA by personally chartering chapters, instituting early policies and
guidelines and presiding over the first two national conventions. She was a teacher in the District of
Columbia Public School system for 11 years and she was a descendant of “America’s oldest, consistently
documented African-American family.”2
This award will be given to the Graduate and Undergraduate Soror who, with passion and commitment,
is a testament to the ideals and principles that guided Soror Nellie’s life of service and love of Alpha Kappa
Alpha. Submissions should include a narrative of not more than three (3) pages double-spaced. Be as
specific as possible, describing the qualities and activities that make the Soror deserving of this award.
Scan in photographs, newspaper clippings, programs and related materials as appropriate, ensuring that

Submissions should include a narrative of not more than three (3) pages typed and double-spaced. Adhere
to the guidelines specific to each NARD’s Award. The nominating chapter must supply a narrative
assessment describing the qualities and activities that make the soror or chapter deserving of the award.
The Basileus or Grammateus must sign the narrative. Scan in supporting documentation of chapter events
or the individual soror’s activities that reflect specific involvement in the award area.
Be as specific and complete as possible. Scan in photographs, newspaper clippings, programs and related
materials as appropriate, ensuring that they are labeled and dated. The name, headline and date of the

This award will be presented to a graduate or undergraduate chapter that is actively promoting good
healthcare for young people and/or adults in the target community. Programs may take the form of health-
related workshops, institutes, clinics, community forums, counseling, health fairs and general health
education. Chapters should provide documentation on the impact of the programs, including successful
outcomes.
This award will be presented to a junior undergraduate Soror who is making “footprints on the hearts of
others.” She is sisterly, spiritual, a scholar, and always exemplifies impeccable moral behavior. She is
willing to share her special skills and knowledge with her chapter as well as with others on the campus,
either through tutoring, advising or by being actively involved in other organizations. She must possess a
minimum of a 2.8 GPA.
This award will be presented to an undergraduate Soror who is committed to enhancing the life of children
through academics and education. She may be pursuing a degree in education or another discipline. She
may be involved in community-based after school programs. She will be evaluated on documentation that
details the soror’s hands-on involvement with the growth and development of children. The submission
should include a description of the progress of the children under her tutelage/supervision and her
creative approaches to reaching and assisting children.
This award will be presented to small, medium and large graduate chapters that reactivate the most
inactive Sorors in the evaluation period, January 1, 2020 - December 31, 2020. The winning chapters must
have reactivated at least 5 sorors for small chapters, 10 sorors for medium chapters and 15 sorors for large
chapters. The documentation of the reactivation with the number of sorors is used to determine the award.

This award will be presented to a graduate or undergraduate soror who has provided support and quietly
come to the aid of another Soror in an extraordinary circumstance and time of need. A supportive narrative
statement should be written by the Soror who was assisted stating how she was helped. If the assisted
Soror is unable to write the statement, another Soror may write it and sign on her behalf. The chapter
Basileus of the nominated “Angel” must submit a statement of corroboration.
This award will be presented to Graduate and Undergraduate chapters with an outstanding Connection
activity or activities. Chapters will be evaluated on their political and social activism to create changes in
policies and processes related to our program. Activities should include participating in activities
mandated by the International Connection Committee at the state and local levels. Submissions will be
evaluated on creativity, goals, objectives, expected outcomes, degree to which goals were met, impact on
community, level of soror participation, community participation, collaboration and leadership.
This award will be presented to a Graduate Soror who has demonstrated outstanding examples of
educational advancement in the field of education or in an associated field. This may entail personal
advancement or the advancement of students under her supervision. Activities are to be clearly
documented to demonstrate proof of the accomplishment.
This award recognizes an Undergraduate chapter and its sponsoring Graduate chapter for demonstrating
ongoing commitment to strengthening their relationship. These chapters must have met three of the
following requirements:
1. Co-sponsored one or more program activities.
2. Graduate mentors have been assigned to all the new undergraduate members and the
corresponding undergraduate chapter officers, and mentoring activities have been documented.
3. Adhered to or exceeded the requirements that two joint meetings be held each
year.
4. Graduate members have provided resources and/or served as
presenters for the undergraduate chapter during the M.I.P.
5. Documentation showing that
members from each chapter have attended all of these meetings with 25 percent or more of each
chapter’s membership being present at one of these meetings.
This award is presented to a Graduate and an Undergraduate chapter that has implemented a tutorial
program for at least five months. The program should provide services to enhance the educational
achievement of students from Grades 3 through 12 (select one grade level only). Give a brief description of
the program. It can be a collaborative service with other organizations, such as churches, educational
institutions, fraternities, sororities, professional, and/or other service organizations. Supporting
documentation of the activity such as pictures, sign-in logs, thank you notes and articles, etc. must be
included in the submission. Tutorial sessions must not be a part of any soror or soror’s regular work
schedule.

is on education, service, teenage mentoring and community enrichment.

specific as possible, describing the qualities and activities that make the chapter deserving of this award.

their home community or on their college campus. These activities can include, but are not limited to,
such initiatives as Get out the Vote efforts, campaign phone banking, community outreach, and the like.

Target 2: Women’s Healthcare and Wellness
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has a goal to reach 100,000 women through community
awareness of critical health issues impacting African-American women. The focuses will be Breast Cancer
Awareness and Prevention, Heart Health, Nutrition and Wellness for Life, and Care for The Caregiver.
Judging Criteria (100 - points):

community.

50,000 high school students will be assisted with their college application and enrollment process (2020 -

STEPP approach.
