Greetings Sorors of the International Region:
It is my pleasure to invite each of you, along with your International Regional Director, Soror Joy
Elaine Daley, to participate in your 30th International Regional Conference! We are excited to usher
in a new year as we continue Exemplifying Excellence Through Sustainable Service in our local
communities and around the world.
As you know, training is a critical component of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s success. Our conferences and
seminars are designed to provide timely and relevant workshops on a variety of topics to administer
the affairs of our sisterhood, execute our international program of service and fuel our leadership
pipeline. While this training has historically taken place at in-person conferences, gathering
restrictions imposed to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus now require us to pivot to a virtual
format. Be assured, however, that your Regional Team has worked tirelessly to ensure the same
quality of conference to which you have grown accustomed.
Regional Director Daley and the 30th International Regional Conference Leadership Team look
forward to welcoming sorors from around the world to your region’s historic virtual conference!
So, make plans to register before it is too late.
Thank you for your continued support and commitment to Alpha Kappa Alpha. I hope to see you at
your regional conference.
Yours in Alpha Kappa Alpha Excellence,
Soror Glenda Glover
Supreme Basileus

RE: 30TH INTERNATIONAL REGIONAL CONFERENCE
Greetings to the lovely ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. I am happy to greet you as Premier of Bermuda and also
as a proud brother of Alpha Phi Alpha as you commence the 30th International Regional Conference entitled Globally Apart Virtually
Together, in Sisterhood and Service hosted by the Sigma Xi Omega Chapter of Bermuda.
This year’s conference could not be more appropriately named. Globally Apart, not only highlights the challenges brought on by the
current pandemic, but also illuminates the global reach of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority with chapters all over the world. Virtually
Together, shows that despite the challenges we face we continue to adapt and ensure through technology that important events
such as this can go on and person can come together. And, no two words exemplify the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority better than
Sisterhood and Service.
In Bermuda we are grateful for the devoted service of the Sigma Xi Omega Chapter to our community for over 30 years. From
helping to feed those in need, to awarding scholarships, and their most important and consistent work of empowering our young
women, their dedication to service is inspirational. Through this work the women of Sigma Xi Omega Chapter embody the mission of
Alpha Kappa Alpha to be of “Service to All Mankind".
Also embodied is Alpha Kappa Alpha’s mission to create leaders in our local communities and on the national and international
stage. I am privileged to work alongside your fellow soror and a leader in our own community, Bermuda’s Minister of Health, The
Hon. Kim Wilson, JP, MP. Minister Wilson has worked relentlessly on the frontlines of our battle against the coronavirus in service of
the people of Bermuda. She and others such as soror Dr. Desiree Spriggs of HELIX Genetic and Scientific Solutions Laboratory are
shining examples of the excellence that is synonymous with your Sorority.
From the Cabinet Office in Bermuda, to the White House in Washington DC, your positive impact and influence is evident as your
fellow Sorors in leadership today work for a fairer and better world for all. From the campuses of Historically Black Colleges and
Universities throughout the United States, to universities around the world the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will undoubtedly
continue to cultivate the future leaders of tomorrow who will continue that great work.
On behalf of the Government and people of Bermuda, I welcome you to this year’s virtual International Regional Conference and it is
my hope that we can welcome you to our shores in person very soon. I would like to commend the Sigma Xi Omega chapter for their
incredible work on making this virtual conference a reality, and for their continued commitment to service in our local community. I
also thank the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for its leadership, positive influence and service throughout the world.
Sincerely,
The Hon. E. David Burt, JP, MP

The region was established in 1957 with the chartering of Eta Beta Omega Chapter in Monrovia, Liberia. Soror
Anne E. Cooper, the first dean of the College of Liberia, led the group that petitioned the 1954 Boule for a
charter. She attended Howard University and was initiated in Alpha Chapter in 1917. Supreme Basileus
Arnetta G. Wallace chartered the chapter in Liberia and Mrs. Cooper was elected Basileus.
In 1958, Alpha Kappa Alpha celebrated her 50th Anniversary and elected Soror Marjorie Holloman Parker as
the new Supreme Basileus. Sorors participating in the Golden Jubilee post-Boule tour went with Soror Parker
to Europe and Africa and visited with the Sorors in Liberia before traveling on to Ghana and Nigeria. It was a
heady time as Ghana and Guinea were newly independent and liberation was on the minds of people of African
descent all over the world. During this time Alpha Kappa Alpha played a prominent role in the international
relations.
With the change in Liberia’s government in 1981, and the subsequent years of Civil War, Eta Beta Omega
Chapter became inactive. Soror Cooper became an Ivy Beyond the Wall in January 1987 while living in the
United States in exile. Although several others were exiled in the US, they reactivated the chapter in 2007 in
the wake of newfound political stability and in anticipation of the chapters 50th Anniversary. Moreover, before
and since the political upheavals, Eta Beta Omega women achieved distinction in the global arena as the first
African woman to lead the UN General Assembly (Soror Angie Brooks 1969) and as the first woman to be
elected chief of state on the African continent (Liberian President Soror Ellen Johnson Sirleaf 2006).
The region added a second chapter in 1963 when Eta Psi Omega Chapter was chartered in Nassau, Bahamas
during the leadership of Supreme Basileus Dr. Julia Brogden Purnell. My Gamma Omega Chapter in St. Croix,
US Virgin Islands and Mu Psi Omega Chapter in Germany were chartered in 1978 and 1979 respectively, under
the leadership of the 19th and 20th Supreme Basilei, Bernice I. Sumlin and Soror Barbara Kinard Phillips. The
5th chapter Pi Upsilon Omega Chapter in Freeport, Grand Bahama was chartered under the leadership of the
21st Supreme Basileus Faye B. Bryant in 1987.
Our 22nd Supreme Basileus, Soror Janet Jones Ballard, adopted a national program theme of “Service With A
Global Perspective” and the sorority experienced its most aggressive years of international expansion and
outreach during her administration. Rho Nu Omega Chapter, Seoul Korea (1988), Sigma Theta Omega
Chapter of St. Thomas/St. John USVI, (1990) and Sigma Xi Omega Chapter, Bermuda (1990) were all
chartered during Supreme Basileus Ballard’s tenure.
Furthermore, in 1988, Soror Ballard initiated Barbadian Honorary Soror Dame Nita Barrow (who had served
as Secretary General for the Nairobi, Kenya UN Women’s Conference in 1986), and UK General Members MP
Diane Abbott and Public Relations firm owner Jenni Francis as honorary members.
Soror Ballard also led an Alpha Kappa Alpha delegation to the 1986 UN International Women’s conference and
held the first Alpha Kappa Alpha Leadership Conferences outside of the Continental US in 1986 (Montego Bay,
Jamaica), and 1988 (Freeport, Grand Bahamas). The AKA/Africare “Adopt a Village” partnership grew during
this time and became a model for the African American fraternal and civic organizations.
Under the leadership of Soror Mary Shy Scott, the 23rd Supreme Basileus, the International Region became the
tenth Legislative Region of the sorority in 1990 by Boule vote. This was very significant in firmly establishing
the region in a legislative capacity. Soror Bella G. Parker was appointed the 1st Legislative International
Regional Director. Prior to her appointment, the Supreme Basileus had also served as the International
13
Regional Director. In 1992, Tau Sigma Omega Chapter in London, England was chartered during the tenure of
Mary Shy Scott.
In 1996, another milestone was reached under the leadership of Supreme Basileus, Dr. Eva L. Evans with the
chartering of the first undergraduate chapters in the region. The chapters were on both campuses of the
University of the Virgin Islands---on St. Croix, Rho Xi and on St. Thomas, Rho Omicron. Additionally, the
chapters established the first Greek lettered organizations chartered on the campuses of the university. Soror
Phyllis Robinson, the region’s 2nd Legislative Regional Director oversaw these chartering ceremonies. The
sitting Directorate and visiting sorors from chapters throughout the United States attended this historic event.
Alpha Kappa Alpha entered a partnership with Dr. Leon Sullivan’s IFESH during the Norma Soloman White
administration and the sorority had a huge impact in South Africa during this time. The sorority built 10
schools in post-apartheid South Africa; Supreme Basileus White led a post-
Boule tour to South Africa in 2000; and another small delegation to dedicated the schools in May of 2002. The
White administration also oversaw the 3rd International Regional Director Wilma Holmes Tootle’s 2000
chartering of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s second Asian chapter, Phi Omicron Omega Chapter in Okinawa, Japan. In
2006, during the tenure of 26th Supreme Basileus Linda Marie White, Psi Beta Omega Chapter in Tokyo,
Japan under the direction of the 4th International Regional Director, Soror Nadine Bonds. In this same year,
Tau Sigma Omega Chapter, London, England was dissolved by vote of the Detroit, Michigan Boule.
In 2007, during the tenure of Centennial Supreme Basileus Barbara A. McKinzie, Psi Delta Omega Chapter was
chartered in Ontario, Canada and Eta Beta Omega Chapter, Monrovia, Liberia was reactivated. The
International Region celebrated its Golden Jubilee July 11, 2008 at the International Regional Conference in
Washington, D.C. preceding the Centennial Boule. During the Carolyn House Stewart Administration, under
the leadership of Soror Evelyn Sample- Oates, the 7th International Regional Director, the region continued to
expand. The third undergraduate chapter in the region, Tau Nu Chapter, was chartered at the College of the
Bahamas, Nassau campus in 2012. The following year, our presence on the continent of Africa grew when Psi
Tau Omega Chapter was chartered. The service project of the charter group with Stop Hunger Now, led to a
historic food packing initiative at the 66th Boule in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2014.
The International Region experienced one of its most significant historical moments at the 66th Boule when
Soror Gizette L. Canegata Thomas was installed as the International Regional Director. Appointed by Supreme
Basileus Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, Soror Gizette has the distinction of being the first Regional Director who
is a member of the International Region. In addition, Soror Mavis Johnson Collie was appointed as the
Chairman of the International Archives Standing Committee. Madam Supreme’s commitment to fully engage
sorors of the International Region was further illustrated by the increased number of International Region
sorors appointed to serve as regional representatives on International Committees.
The International Region welcomed its 16th chapter in January 2016 with the historic chartering of Alpha
Kappa Alpha’s first chapter in the Middle East. The chartering of Omega Theta Omega Chapter in Dubai under
the leadership of Gizette Canegata Thomas and Supreme Basileus Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson was witnessed
by a delegation of over 400 sorors representing all regions of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Those in attendance included
16 Members of the Directorate (including all 10 Regional Directors); four Former Supreme Basilei; 2 Former
International Regional Directors; and representatives from all graduate chapters in the International Region.
On June 9, 2018, the International Region grew once again with the chartering of the first four letter named
chapter in the region, Alpha Alpha Delta Omega Chapter chartered in Toronto, Canada. International Regional
Director Gizette Canegata Thomas, joined by 6 Members of the Directorate, 2 Former Regional Directors,
representatives from 4 International Region Chapters and a delegation of Sorors from the Great Lakes and
South Central Regions, welcomed the 17th chapter to the Ingenious International Region.
The small and mighty International Region is extending the ivy vine around the world with sisterly love,
impactful service programs, and by a commitment to life-long learning through leadership.
