EDITOR'S NOTE

It's 1989 and the Class of 1988 finally has a yearbook!. Who's to blame? I don't have the answer to that specific question, but I
must thank the few people who asked ... "What can I do to help?" Most students merely asked ... "Hey, when is that yearbook
coming out?!!!" An extra special thanks go to Brad Unroe, Janet Simon, Mark Nathanson, Sandie Weakland, Homyar Karanjia,
and Beth Romac for without all your time and effort this edition of the Occopodian would still be scattered about Room 812. I want
to thank Joel DiSanti for getting me involved in this Occopodian experience. To Vaughne Wolfe, thanks for all your support and
guidance ... you'll be missed. To the student affairs gang-Judy, Lori, and Dean Penn, thanks for your support and a special note
to John Urian for all of his patience!

An unfortunate trend has developed since the early '80's. This trend has been a laissez - faire attitude by students toward the
yearbook resulting in one disappointing yearbook after another. Instead of harping on this sad situation, I would like to plead for
student and faculty involvement. We need students from each class and organizations to be responsible for creating a written and
pictorial account of the events and experiences which have taken place throughout the year . We need students and faculty to make
themselves available for portrait days. Most importantly, we need your ideas and enthusiasm. In addition, I would like to make ev-
eryone aware of the cost involved in producing a yearbook. Each year the Occopodian's expenses exceed $10,000. Where does this
money come from? In 1987, OPMSA budgeted $10,000 toward the yearbook. In 1988 $6,000 and in 1989 $4,000 from your
student activity fee (from approximately $22 per student to $10 per student). Corporate sponsorship has decreased from $4,000 in
198 6 and 1987 to $1,000 in 1988. This decrease is mainly due to lack of Occopodian staff able to solicit these sponsors. Where must
we turn for the remaining funds? Students, parents, Alumni and faculty. Yes, we also need your support financially.

We would all like to have an annual to be proud of as graduating seniors, but we can't wait until our senior year to work on this im-
mense project. The Occopodian can be of great sentimental value and a historical record of each of your four years at O.C.P.M.
Furthermore, working on the Occopodian can be a creative outlet from our professional studies. The Occopodian can be a
showpiece for our profession, as seen in Occopodians from 1917 to the early l 980's, but we must have your participation.

T he Occopodian staff has worked very hard to change this trend of poor yearbooks. We believe you will find much improvement
from the 1987 edition, however we realize it still has many short comings. We did what we could, but we needed your ideas, your
help, and your enthusiasm.
