INTERNSHIP
EXTERNSHIP
This appears to be the age of gaps. We have the generation gap, the
missile gap and, I feel, a gap between the students' education and the
active role of the professional podiatrist in the office practice. It is,
therefore, a specific function of the internship to act as a bridge for
this gap and smooth the way to a successful and fulfilling podiatry
practice.

EXTERN AND INTERNSHIPS AT
WADSWORTH VA CENTER
The Veterans Administration Center, Wads-
worth, Kansas, which is affiliated with the Ohio
College of Podiatric Medicine, and in co-opera-
tion with the College, offers a 12-month Rotating
Podiatry Internship and a 3-month Podiatry
Externship yearly.
The total bed capacity of the Center is approx-
imately 1,450 patients, and consists of a general
hospital, neuropsychiatric hospital, nursing home
care unit, and a domiciliary.
The three interns who are selected jointly by
O.C.P.M. and the Wadsworth VA, spend four
months each at this institution, rotating simul-
taneously through general podiatry, general and
podiatric surgery. The extern spends one month
each on general medicine, general surgery, and in
the Podiatry Clinic.
The program is directed by Dr. James A.
Crawford, Chief, Podiatry Section, with Dr.
Donald A. Mahrle of Topeka, Kansas, as teach-
ing Podiatry Consultant.

EXTERN PROGRAM AT CLEVELAND STATE HOSPITAL
The Podiatry Department has played an active part on the Cleveland State Hospi-
tal Staff for over a period of twenty years. It was founded through the co-operation
of the superintendent of the hospital and the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine.
Its supervision is under the direction of graduate Podiatrist, Dr. John N. Kane.
The staff also consists of Drs. Carl C. Sosinski, John M. Warrix, James C. Mac-
Veigh, and Carl J . Difranco.
The Department has at its disposal all the facilities of a modern hospital. This
enables the staff to offer a more complete and comprehensive teaching program.
For the last three years, the staff has also included one full-time intern. It offers to
the fourth-year students ample opportunities for participation in hospital protocol,
surgical observations, and over-all hospital functions.
This program enables the student to increase his perspective, appreciate Podiatry
as a unit of the medical department, and understand at the same time some of the
therapeutics and rehabilitation of patients, both from the physical and psychiatric
standpoints.

IN-SERVICE TRAINING AT HAWTHORNDEN
STATE HOSPITAL
Hawthornden State Hospital is an institution for mental patients located at the
northernmost tip of Summit County near Northfield, Ohio. Its Podiatry Depart-
ment was established in 1950, and in-service podiatry training in 1966.
Dr. Stephen Rehak heads the Department of Podiatry and Dr. James A. Con-
forti is the consultant in podiatric medicine. Two cooperative programs·have been
established with this Hospital. Interns rotate through the Hospital on a monthly
basis and third-year students are assigned over a two-week period for in-service
training on an externship basis.
Hawthornden offers exposure to a great variety of foot pathologies, permitting
third-year students to improve their diagnostic abilities and treatment skills. Stu-
dents and interns become familiar with hospital protocols, records, and with the
management of psychiatric patients, as well as improving their basic skills in podia-
tric medicine.
Dr. I. J . Tolan, Superintendent, has been an enthusiastic supporter of these clini-
cal programs, and the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine is indebted to him for his
cooperation.

EXTERN PROGRAM AT HIGHLAND VIEW HOSPITAL
Highland View Hospital, a modern and progressive Cuyahoga County institu-
tion, is unique in that it is one of the few institutions in the United States wherein
specific steps have been taken to provide a realistic program for the care, treatment
and rehabilitation of persons with disability, and long-term illness. The restoration
of the patient to maximal independence is the basic objective of therapy.
The hospital is a 600 bed institution located in the southeastern suburban area of
Cleveland and epitomizes the concept of ..total medical care team work." All the
medical specialties, including podiatry, are represented at Highland View, except
pediatrics and obstetrics.
Besides the podiatry extern program, Highland View Hospital is affiliated with
the Western Reserve University Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, and is dedi-
cated to and conducts extensive research and teaching programs.
This unusual institution serves the young as well as the aged who are afflicted
with traumatic disabilities, locomotor system impairment due to neurological dis-
ease, malignancies and chronic degenerative disease.
The extern program for the seniors of the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine
was initiated in 1956 under the direction and supervision of Dr. Henry S. Dennis,
Chief of the Department of Podiatry at Highland View and Past President of the
Ohio Podiatry Association. This program is designed to aid future podiatrists
toward an improved understanding of hospital procedure, protocol, recording, chart-
ing, terminology, scope of practice, organizational methodology and many other
aspects of institutional podiatry practice and clinical experience.
