The Smiling Faces sculpture by
Belgian Sculptor Bilio Nic

Located: Danubiana Museum of Moodern Art,
Bratuslava-Cunov
Dimensions: Height 415cm
Nicolaas Billiau is a Belgian Postwar & Contemporary
artist who was born in Belgium, in 1950.
He is a sculptor and painter.

The Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum is located less than 15km south
of the Slovakian capital Bratislava, on the borders of three neighbouring
countries, Slovakia, Austria and Hungary. A recently completed, lavish
extension of the structure – voted “Building of the Year” in Slovakia just a
short while ago – raises the appeal of this cultural showcase project. The
museum complex, considered one of the most interesting projects of its
kind in Central Europe, is completely bathed in ERCO light.
Opened in 2000 as a result of the initiative of Slovakian gallery owner
Vincent Polakovic and Dutch entrepreneur and art patron Gerard H.
Meulensteen, it is the first and currently only museum of modern and
contemporary art in Slovakia. Despite its international recognition, its
collection features distinctly regional focal points – pertinent to the roots of
its founders. Paintings and drawings are joined by a variety of sculptures,
many of which are displayed outside the museum in its surrounding
parkland.

BIOGRAPHY OF BILLIO NIC

He is a sculptor and painter. Nicolaas Billiau, artist name Billio Nic, was born in Ypres,
Belgium in 1950. He is a sculptor and painter who uses very distinctive shapes with
very vibrant colors. All of his works of art are hand painted and are all handmade,
one of a kind pieces. Polyester Fiberglass also known as "poly sculpture", a term
invented by Oscar Permeke, is what most of Billio Nic's sculptures are made out of.
Animals and women are what seems to inspire Nicolaas Billiau the most. Over the
past four years, the artworks of Billio Nic have doubled in value. Approximately 40
percent of his works of art are sold in Belgium and about 40 percent find their way to
the Netherlands.

WHAT IS ART TO WEAR?

Wearable art, also known as Artwear or "art to wear", refers to individually designed pieces
of (usually) handmade clothing or jewellery created as fine or expressive art. While the
making of any article of clothing or other wearable object typically involves aesthetic
considerations, the term wearable art implies that the work is intended to be accepted as a
serious and unique artistic creation or statement. Pieces may be sold and/or exhibited. The
modern idea of wearable art seems to have surfaced more than once in various forms.
Marbeth Schon's book on modernist jewellery (see the section on jewellery below) refers to
a "wearable art movement" spanning roughly the years 1930 to 1960.
