Sing for your heart

A 6-YEAR-OLD boy from Bradford is leading a Leeds-based
charity’s Christmas campaign to raise money for research into heart
disease, supported by some of showbiz’s biggest celebrities.
Jaxon Green-Moore, from Queensbury, Bradford, was born with
LEOPARD Syndrome, a rare condition that affects the skin, face and
heart.  As a result Jaxon has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy where the
muscles in the heart wall become thick and stiff, and pulmonary stenosis,
a narrowing of the pulmonary valve which pumps blood from the heart to
the lungs.
His condition is so rare that only 200 in the world are known to have it.
Jaxon is leading Heart Research UK’s Sing for your Heart Christmas
charity campaign – a social media campaign asking members of the
public and celebrities to ‘sing, donate and nominate’ by uploading a short
video of themselves singing on social media, texting SING to 70144 to
donate £3 and then nominating up to three others.
Celebrities supporting the campaign already include Strictly Come
Dancing stars Aston Merrygold and Brian Conley, Britain’s Got Talent’s
Alesha Dixon, Loose Women Linda Robson, Stacey Solomon and Nadia
Sawalha, Panto favourite Christopher Biggins, and ITV’s Good Morning
Britain’s Piers Morgan.
Irish boy band Boyzone, who Jaxon nominated, have also taken part,
posting their video on social media.
Around 7 million people are living with cardiovascular disease in
the UK and many have been helped thanks to pioneering medical
research. However 70,000 people die from coronary heart disease every
year – the UK’s single biggest killer. More research is needed to help
prevent these deaths and to help families like Jaxon.

Everything under

one roof

Christmas is a time to relax and spend time
together as a family, especially after the hectic
preparations in the run up to the big day itself.

AT the Arium you can find help to get ready for the festive season with
everything under one roof from real Christmas trees to decorations and gifts.
Choosing a real Christmas tree is a popular tradition so whether you prefer a
small or large tree, or just one that doesn’t drop needles, staff will be on hand to
help you choose.
Poinsettias, beautiful natural wreaths and winter potted plants are perfect for
helping you dress the rest of your home and garden.
Younger members of the family can enjoy a peep into ‘Santa’s living room’
and post their Christmas wish list through his letter box. There is also a craft
table where they can get creative with activities including calendar and bauble-
making.
The shop is full of festive gift ideas from locally produced chutneys and festive
teas to candles, lanterns and floral Christmas baskets.
Then finally, treat yourself to a spot of lunch in the café, a mince pie (or two)
or perhaps the best-selling three-tier carrot cake, washed down with a fresh
brew.

After popular demand Brimham Rocks
Adventure Farm have set February half term
2018 to open their doors to the public

FOR 10 years now they have provided Yorkshire’s very own mobile farm, Riggmoor
Reindeer & Co, for Birthdays, Public events and Santa deliveries. Frequently the
question is asked “is the farm open to visitors?”.
Well finally the answer is yes!
The aim is to provide the same, if not even better, service as always but people will
be able to go and spend the day at the farm. They can meet the animals, learn about
the farm with seasonal farming activities such as lambing and chick hatching. Burn up
lots of energy on the large outdoor play and adventure areas.
If it is wet then you can pop inside to the large indoor play barn, have a spot of
something to eat and a hot drink whilst taking in the stunning view of Lower Nidderdale.
But don’t panic, normal operation of Riggmoor Reindeer will continue with some new
features for spring to run alongside the Petting farm.
The full list of activities will be available to see on the new website which is coming
soon.

Bursting with festive

cheer

A magical destination like
no other, The Piece Hall
in the heart of Halifax is
bursting with festive cheer

FOR the first time, a Spiegeltent will take centre stage from 15 December
until New Years’ Eve, providing a very special intimate venue for an eclectic
programme of storytelling, family shows, live music, stand-up comedy
and late-night cabaret.  A Spiegeltent, or ‘mirror tent’, is a 20 metre round
wooden structure, lavishly decorated inside with mirrors and glass, which
will become the perfect place for the festive celebrations.
Family shows include Leeds-based writer Matthew Bellwood who
will open the Spiegeltent each morning with A Selection of Stories From
Around The World, a brand-new family stage show featuring the wonderful
characters from the BAFTA award winning CBeebies show Sarah & Duck,
a comedy show filled with circus and stupid science from Funny Stuff for
Happy People with comedian Martin Mor and much more.
There is also a range of creative activities including the specially-created
industrious elves workshop and a series of bespoke window displays
crafted by 500 school children, with characters and light bringing the
building to life from dusk each evening.

The

Book of

Dragons

AN alarming plague of dragons is heading towards York
Theatre Royal Studio this Christmas. Small ones, tall ones,
fiery ones, roary ones, friendly ones, icy ones, scary ones.
They come from the pages of The Book of Dragons by
E. Nesbit, author of classic children’s book The Railway
Children.
York Theatre Royal Associate Director Juliet Forster has
adapted the stories from The Book of Dragons and also
directs the production, the first in-house Christmas show
produced in the Studio from 12 December to 6 January.
“I’d read The Book of Dragon stories as a child and had
a copy of them. I think stories with dragons were really good
for any age.” says Juliet. “E Nesbit has a really lovely sense
of humour and a lot of the dragons in her stories are funny
or friendly, not all of them are frightening.”

Chatty year

2017 was all about babysigning for Eden. She was 8 months old at the
start of the year, and through weekly classes and watching her family
use gestures alongside their speech, she began to sign back. ‘Where’
was her first sign, after dropping her spoon under the table. She soon
clicked with the idea, and by the end of 2017 her ‘vocabulary’ was huge -
animals, colours, vehicles, daily routines like getting changed, mealtimes,
bedtime etc.
She loves being able to interact in this special way, reducing her
frustration at not being understood.
Her speech is exploding now, so 2018 looks to be a chatty year!
