Practical Keys for Personal Development

Seven Keys to SUCCESS

Key to Success #4:

Complete What You Start

The Second “C” in SUCCESS
stands for Complete What
You Start. It's possible to
have multiple visions and be a multitasker. But
that can lead to both blessings and curses. If
you are blessed to have more than one vision,
skill and/or passion you should apply them.

50

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
But if you have more than one vision, skill
and/or passion and they are scattered and
distracted and you don't complete any, it
becomes a curse.

One of the best ways of completing tasks
is to have them written down and know which
order the completion must take place. When
you have written goals, tasks, dreams or
resolutions, you have a much better chance at
accomplishing them.

What is before you, is what you will focus
on and attempt. The Key is to develop the
discipline it takes to complete the task or tasks
at hand. When we put it on a to-do list or vision

51

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
board or sticky note or however you need to
have it in front of you, once it’s in front of you
it becomes a priority.

In my effort to accomplish the things that
I have on my to-do task board it must be
written and looked at it daily. But it all begins
with the mindset to complete what I set out to
do. Success is accomplished in increments.
When I had big frustrating tasks to accomplish
my father would always ask me, “How do you
eat an elephant?” Then he’d walk off knowing
he’d already given me the answer…

“You eat an elephant one bite at a time”
meaning that no matter how big the task, all

52

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
you can do is much as you can do at one time.
It requires that you tackle each incremental
aspect on a consistent basis, the result being
the completed task. It’s in doing the repetitive
incremental tasks that the result is
accomplishment.

I spent several years in the automobile
business and was very successful. I was
successful because I completed each step that
was required on the road to the sale. It began
with what is called the “Meet and Greet” and
ended with a proper “Delivery. There were
eight steps in all and if either one of those eight

53

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
steps were missed, the sale would not to
happen.

Management was required to make sure
that every step was followed. Each completion
of each step took us closer to the finish line
which was a satisfied client that actually
purchased a vehicle. Completing a task and
completing what you start is more than just hot
air and space in this book, it is a secret key to
success and fulfillment in life. In life people
have begun many tasks and stopped, in search
for the next big shiny object.

The shiny object syndrome is something
that distracts, delays and destroys people on

54

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
their quest for success. We are creatures of
focus and when we see something that catches
our focus, we will generally gravitate towards
it.

I'm reminded of children at Christmas
time with too many presents. As they go
through and open each one, they are so excited
about the next one they can inadvertently lose
or forget about the previous one. In the process
of opening the pervious one parts get lost or
broken

When the time came to play with the first
gift they discover that parts are missing, they
are now unable to enjoy it because they never

55

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
completed the initial task of opening and
enjoying it and putting it away once finished
before going to the next one.
You must complete what you start before you
go to the next task, otherwise when you need it
or if it’s not completed, you’re frustrate,
sidetracked and pretty much defeated.

Key to Success #5:

Execute Your Plan

The “E” in SUCCESS stands
for EXECUTION. Execution
versus gathering information
is about deciding to make a move on the vision
you have for your life, it’s time to execute!
When this first came to me, I didn't understand
the correlation. As I've gotten more focused

58

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
and understand the success cycle more that is
the most brilliant piece of knowledge I’ve been
blessed to grasp along the way. We live in an
information age, a time where there is more
information available in the palm of our hands
than was available to put the 1st man on the
moon.

Technology has exploded access to
information. We can Google, we can Yahoo, we
can YouTube, any information we want is at
our fingertips 24/7. Yet information not
implemented is useless. Execution is a MAJOR
Key to Success. Distractions cause us to not
execute.

59

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
Example: When cleaning the house,
we’re often distracted by the television, then
skip over to vacuuming, then bounce around to
doing laundry, etc. Without having direction,
we can do a lot of work without getting
anything completed. This is called “Busy
Work”, which creates fertile ground for failure
to execute. Completion is a result of execution
and execution begins as an internal motive,
push or drive to get something done. It ends
with an external experience that results in tasks
completed.

There are many reasons for not
executing. And it's funny because, just like

60

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
excuses, all of them sound good to the person
giving them. The reasons have been shifted to
the point where there is no longer a valid,
urgent reason to do what needs to be done thus
procrastination sets in.

The execution timeframe still must
work. If it is not implemented, it will not be
executed and ultimately, you’ll fall behind in
reaching your goals.

The Great Bishop TD Jakes said in a
sermon that “execution is the next step in the
harvest”. Say the field is ripe and ready to be
harvested but there are not enough workers,
and no one puts forth the effort or executes

61

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
what is required to take the crop from the field
and harvest it, to actually collect on the sowing
that was done when the time to reap has
come… There’ll be no profit!

People that are counting on you don't
care about excuses, all they want to see is
production and ultimately execution. When
you engage with a potential client in business
and you fail to execute, you lose the client, it’s
as simple as that and they probably are not
coming back.

They don't care about your excuses, your
situations or anything of the sort, they hired
you to complete a task, to execute the order and

62

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
you didn’t come through. Your failure to do so
causes them to lose trust and respect for you.
Execution shows that you are accountable to
yourself and the integrity of your business.
What’s displayed on the outside was built on
the inside.

65

Seven Keys to SUCCESS

Key to Success #6:

Share Your Success.

The next “S” in SUCCESS
stands for Share Your
Success. The number one
reason success must be shared is, it's like a
conduit of water. If it’s all coming in and
nothing is going out a body of water becomes
stagnant and useless. Shared success is the
secret to more success.

66

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
The Bible tells us, “Give and it shall be given
unto you; good measure, pressed down and
shaken together…” Luke 6:38

The selfish mindset says that I need to
can all I can get and get all I can. It says one
must keep it and save it and not give it away,
because giving it away means I now have less If
you understand the laws of success, giving is
the primary principle. Everything is about
giving. When you help enough other people
attain and achieve their goals and dreams,
yours comes automatically

When you have employed all the
principles I've already spoken of and executed

67

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
them, the result becomes harvest, you must be
prepared to share some of that with those less
fortunate or those that are in need. By doing so
you open an avenue that allows you to receive
even more. It's a principal that operates
whether you believe it or not. Those who
willingly and cheerfully give, find doors
opening for them that they didn't even have a
key for.

Selfishness is the ruin of people. As I said
earlier, it’s a principle that encourages
stagnation and prevents growth. You benefit
when you help others to help themselves. Your
help comes from an altogether different source,

68

Seven Keys to SUCCESS

one that you didn't even consider. Once you
help another person, someone else will help
you at a most unexpected but necessary time.
Success takes being able to create solutions
that solve problems, make life better or fix
issues in different processes. The most
successful people in the world became that way
by creating solutions that solve problems, and
by bringing value to situations that impact the
world thus giving back to the world. The
principle of giving is not JUST for helping
others. It’s also a door for you to receive more.
It's a philosophy of life that we should all learn
to live by. Giving indicates integrity, adds value
to who you are as a person and it helps to fuel

69

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
your WHY. By putting others first, it puts you
out front. Others win and benefit from your
efforts, in the long run who you are is not what
you have, but what has you and how it benefits
others. The R.O.I (Return On Investment) on
not only your investment but your BELIEF in
this key principle will amaze you.

70

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
71

Seven Keys to SUCCESS

Key to Success #7:

Stand for Something
The final “S” in SUCCESS means
STAND For Something. Success is nothing
without someone to share with and if it doesn’t
make an impact what’s it all for? If you don't
stand for something, you’ll fall for anything and
so will the goals you’ve set. When you have
integrity, you do the right thing even when no

72

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
one is looking, that’s when you’ve arrived. Your
success is predicated on how people perceive
you. When you stand for something it gives
people a chance to know who you are and what
you're about. What you do is done by default
and it doesn't matter if you drive a Mercury or
Mitsubishi or Mercedes, your true worth will
shine forth. When you stand for something
people will appreciate you.

Self-enrichment, self-aggrandizement, is
not something to be sought after. Your
practices expose you.

More money doesn't mean that you're
better, it just exposes exactly who you are. For

73

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
many people, more money means that they can
to do better and bless more people. For others,
it means they'll be more selfish and try to
accumulate even more because they are able to
do so and simply out that’s just who and how
they are, so that’s what they do. We should all
be people that stand for the betterment of our
communities and of others. As a foundation of
thinking we should all put forth great effort to
be a source of good.

If you stand for the right thing the wrong
things tend to be pushed away. When you have
a strong foundation, one built on respect,
accountability, positive principles, and

74

Seven Keys to SUCCESS
standards, they will protect you and your
name. When you stand for something and
someone tries to smear or slander you, those
that know what you stand for will defend you
and you won't have to do it on your own.

People know that the negative things
spoken about you are not true if you stand for
something that is positive and right. But if you
stand for nothing and are willing to do
anything to get what you want, everything said
about you will be believed and will be
magnified. Don't stand for anything except the
right thing. Stand for something that makes a
difference.
