shift in lamination for cut and sew the pressure is mounting on the Tier suppliers to provide

a repeatable process that is cost efficient.

Traditional automation and tooling suppliers have offered

little to no viable solutions to maintaining stick position

tolerances and delamination in concave surface areas. Decades

old technology has been adapted to enable them to continue

to meet typical demands but provides little success as interior

parts become more complex

3CON, which provides technology solutions for automotive

interiors, has developed and tested new technologies to address

specific market needs to meet the latest interior finishing

trends on soft products. It has created a paradigm shift in

manufacturing with its Segmented Cavity Lamination Process,

to help manufacturers meet the need for lamination on heavily

contoured and concave surfaces, and make difficult stitching

tolerances possible.

Traditionally, a Tier 1 supplier for IP can take 480-700 seconds

to make a cut-and-sew cover, where pressure is applied on

a single axis, and the time is heavily dependent on the skill of

the operator. This process does not provide consistent true

adhesion over a complex surface, however. Only surfaces

perpendicular to the press stroke get the necessary 7-10psi

of pressure, with angled surfaces getting far less.

3CON’s solution approaches the surface from a multitude

of angles without leaving marks, and as a result achieves true

lamination with 7-10psi of applied pressure. In addition the

seam alignment device remains with the tool during the

entire process, mechanically locking the seam in place for

absolute positioning during lamination.

This requires only 180-240 seconds with internal prefixing in

the tool and therefore results in a higher yield with the added

benefits of less floor space requirement, less capital and tooling

expenditure, less manpower and a repeatable process in the most

difficult surfaces contours, which is not operator dependent.

Lamination is just one area where the Austrian company

offers innovative manufacturing solutions. Vacuum lamination,

edge folding, door assembly and IMG are also offered by the

specialists to help provide alternative

Cromatipic provides a completely different

approach from traditional paint and PVD technologies,

with the crucial element that no lacquer top-coat is needed

be applied to a number of industries including consumer

electronics and jewelry, but it is also recognized as an
