INTRODUCTION

The NEXT GENERATION HKY High Performance Athlete Program consists of:

On-ice skills development and technical training

Unlimited Blade Skating Treadmill at 4 locations to increase skating speed and efficiency

Player evaluation, skills mapping and full Individual Program Report

Over the course of the off-season, the HPA program increases in the amount of training time, complexity, and intensity. This
allows your player to be at their best for the upcoming season. Program participants will increase their skating confidence, learn
tactical and technical skills for smarter hockey, and will become better athletes.
Every athlete’s schedule will have different requirements and restrictions. Each family should take time to plan accordingly
throughout the off-season, and give consideration to their athlete’s age, skill set and other commitments. We have taken the time
to remove some of the guesswork from this process by creating a ‘one-stop shop’ program for your athlete.
When you register in the HPA program, we personally invest in your player’s success. We are committed to being available for all
off-season needs.

COACHES & MENTORS

PASSION AND EXPERIENCE

Our lead coaches have been working in Eastern Ontario since 2008. We have six full-time coaches and an impressive list
of part-time coaches that train over 6500 athletes annually.

DEREK MILLER
Derek has a lifetime of experience in playing, coaching, and development across
many sports, with his true passion being hockey and athlete performance. Having a
25-year playing career combined with 20 years of coaching and player development,
Derek has extensive experience to draw from when working with athletes in today’s
game. Derek’s background studying biology as an NCAA athlete gives him unique
insight when developing multi-phase programming for hockey training.

EVAN BROWNRIGG
Evan’s youthful energy and extensive experience both locally and internationally are without
a doubt what drives him to help athletes excel. The sheer amount of hours Evan logs on ice
training players annually is higher than any other coach/trainer in Eastern Ontario. Pulling
the most out of each player and recognizing their individual goals has become Evan’s
second nature.

KYLE BOCHEK
Kyle has a wealth of hockey experience in both the junior and professional ranks. In
meeting Kyle, his passion for the game is immediately evident and can be seen in his
coaching style both on the ice and in the training centres. Kyle is hands down is one of the
hardest working coaches in player development.

SPORT-SPECIFIC TRAINING

ON-ICE TRAINING

Hockey is characterized by intermittent high-intensity skating with quick changes in speed and direction. Typically, players
are on the ice for 15 to 20 minutes of a typical game. Each shift lasts from 30 to 80 seconds, with four to five minutes of
active recovery between shifts. The average work-to-rest ratio is about 1 to 4.

The HPA program trains your athlete according to these defining characteristics of the game. We focus on improving the
players’ anaerobic energy systems with proper work-to-rest ratios. This means your player will be able to perform for the
entire duration of the game. As an added feature, your player will be in better physical shape. They will have increased focus,
less mental fatigue, and be less prone to injury.

PHASE ONE
MAY 27TH – JULY 25TH • 12-18 HOURS • DEVELOPMENT & BUILDING PHASE
Through the Development & Building phase of the program, all groups all groups will work their way through both
skill based training as well as technical/tactical Hockey IQ sessions. During this phase we will strongly encourage athletes to
use their time not only to stay active for mobility, strength, and increased dexterity.

PHASE TWO
JULY 26TH – AUGUST 16TH • 6-10 HOURS • THE LOADING & PREP PHASE
This will ideally be timed to begin 10-14 days prior to your prior to your season beginning. This final preparation phase
increases the intensity while we transition into more team-like practices with recognizable situational drills to help with
players’ game pace and timing. This phase also includes on-ice conditioning, as a by-product of these high intensity training
sessions.

Our 2018 HPA on-ice curriculum has been broken into two areas of focus. These areas will give each athlete the knowledge
to not only develop the skill sets needed in today’s game, but also understand their applications for game scenarios in order
to become a complete player.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT : EDUCATE • EVALUATE • REINFORCE

The learning process for skill development will follow a ‘what/where/when/why/how’ approach. Today’s youth have a
baseline for gathering information that can be compared to the return from a Google search. In past generations, young
athletes were able to take vague concepts and expand with learned information, as there was no other resource to call
upon. Taking into consideration our audience’s learning patterns, we ensure that each player not only learns a specific skill,
but also where the skill will be used on the ice, when they will use it throughout the game, why they need to master the skill
and finally how they can use it to their advantage.

DEVELOPMENT OF HOCKEY I.Q.

TEACHING ANTICIPATION VERSUS REACTION

The technical and tactical development will be team-based sessions leveraging the players’ skill sets to encourage
anticipating vs. reacting. Hockey IQ which is often referred to as the ‘unteachable skill’ is something we most certainly
believe can be taught to any athlete who first has comprehension of the required skills, but most importantly is
receiving pertinent feedback in teachable moments.

1.DEFENSIVE ANTICIPATION & REACTION
(PWOP—FORE CHECKING, BACKTRACKING, DEFENSIVE ZONE COVERAGE)
Play without puck (PWOP-Defensive) from a defensive side posture is about taking time and space away from
opposition, as well as dictating where the opposition makes their next play (pass, chip, dump, clear). During these
sessions, we will teach core principles, skills and tactics associated with becoming a smarter defensive player. We
teach players to anticipate where the puck is going based on what they and their teammates are doing.

2. TRANSITION ANTICIPATION & REACTION
(PWP—DEFENSIVE ZONE, NEUTRAL ZONE, OFFENSIVE ZONE)
Play with puck (PWP-Transition) from the defensive zone is about getting up the ice in control as quickly as possible.
Getting the advantage on the attack often comes down to how fast a player can anticipate and react in transition
from offense to defense. We believe this can be taught and linked to all game situations in every zone.

3. OFFENSIVE ATTACKS ANTICIPATION & REACTION
(PWP—OFFENSIVE ATTACKS-CONTROLLED ENTRIES)
Playing with the puck (PWP-OA) from the neutral zone is about getting through the neutral zone with pace. Time is
space in hockey. The sooner players get on the attack, under control, with a clear understanding of options that lead
to high scoring chances, the better our chances to score.

4. OFFENSIVE ZONE ANTICIPATION & REACTION
(PWP—OFFENSIVE ZONE)
Playing with the puck (PWP-OZ) while in the offensive zone is about generating scoring chances from middle of the ice
(inside the dots). It is very important for players to understand how to increase odds of scoring by crossing the midline
of the ice. Additionally, creating odd man situations can create primary chances in the offensive zone while following up
to win space, create time and leverage rebounds and broken plays.

5. SPECIAL TEAMS ANTICIPATION & REACTION
(PWP-PP)
Effective power play opportunities come from having calm, composed play with the puck once it is under control.
Teaching players to understand where to move the puck away from pressure in order to get it into a quality scoring
spot is essential. To this end, players away from the puck have to understand where to support the puck carrier and
be ready to make their next decisive play.

Our Blade Skating Treadmill Centres are revolutionary in the Ottawa area. The combination of the biggest, fastest, and most
technologically advanced treadmill, with full-time dedicated coaches, make our facilities the best in the business.
The exponential growth of a player using the treadmill is evident in a short amount of time.

Scientific studies have shown that after only eight treadmill training sessions, AAA male hockey players showed increased
foot speed and leg strength, resulting in a 10% increase in explosive power. During this same 8-week training program,
Junior A hockey players significantly increased their skating speed and reduced on-ice sprinting times.

BLADE SKATING TREADMILL DETAILS:
• Training from April 15th to August 31st, 2018
(Bantam & Midget - 10 treadmill session • Intermediate/NCAA/CIS - Unlimited )
• Flexible online booking based on individual availability
• Semi-Private Coaching: each treadmill training session will be 60 minutes in length, with a maximum of four
players attending per hour. This allows for an ideal work-to-rest ratio, mimicking the proper biological \
structure a player would typically use during a game.

AL DAGGETT
A former multi-sport athlete, Al is no stranger to being part of a winning culture. With
over 20 years of coaching under his belt, Al has developed the unique ability to be
able to truly understand each athlete’s specific needs and to respond accordingly.
Al’s enthusiasm and desire to get to know each athlete allows him to help push each
individual to their personal maximum potential.

ALLIE MARCOTTE
Allie is a triple threat with her level of knowledge, energy, and passion. Joining Next
Generation HKY in 2016, the combination of her playing experience and academic
background in the field of Fitness and Health Promotion has given her the tools to
best serve our athletes. As a Lead treadmill coach Allie has been a integral part in the
development of our treadmill training protocols and excels in training athletes on the
treadmill.

• Two-time National team member Nepean Ravens in her U16 and U19 team years.

PLAYER EVALUATION & MAPPING

NORM MILLEY (HPA HEAD SCOUT)

Our player evaluations are an integral part of the HPA program. Our 2018 player evaluations will see Norm Milley of the Ottawa
67s (OHL) and our Program Manager and Head Coach Kyle Bochek take leadership roles for all HPA programs.

A proper in-season individual development plan is essential for all High Performance Athletes. The 7-8 months spent in-season
are as much of an opportunity for individual growth as they are important to be a contributing teammate. For this reason, Norm
Milley has been hired full time to focus on this area of the HPA program.

This incredible task will be overseen by Coach Norm but will take into account feedback from many sources that will be active
parts of the complete HPA program.

• Detailed Player Evaluation complete with skill-based evaluation, player identification summary and individual feedback
directly from Norm and Bernie.
• Mapping of opportunities and focus areas going forward into the 2018-2019 season, that will be specific to your player’s
age/level. These identified strengths, weaknesses and opportunities will guide any additional training requirements for the
2018-2019 season.
• Introductory road map of 3-year projection for your athlete based on their Hockey IQ, skill ranking and role identity.

Norm brings over 17 years of professional playing experience to go along with his current roll as the
Assistant Coach of the Ottawa 67’s. The Toronto native was selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the
second round (47th overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He had a successful junior career with the
Sudbury Wolves in the OHL, which led to a contract with the Sabres. Milley then spent five seasons
with Buffalo’s AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans. In 2005, Milley signed with the Tampa Bay
Lightning and also scored his first NHL goal that season. He spent three seasons there, playing
for Lightning’s AHL affiliates Springfield Falcons and Norfolk Admirals. Norm’s passion for player
development and hard work reflects in the young talent he works with daily with the 67’s.

The HPA SMALL GROUP - semi private trainings sessions will follow the curriculums used with all our High Performance
development partners the Ottawa 67s (OHL) and the Carleton University Ravens and UOttawa Gee-Gees Men’s teams.
These sessions are designed to challenge and educate players in an active game scenario manner. The small group
setting amplifies the feedback and increases the number of repetitions. The pre-set drills, concepts and focus areas
communicated within these sessions will further compliment the on ice skill development and Hockey IQ training sessions
within our HPA program.

The High Performance athletes will be competitively grouped based on skill/age and be taken through the custom HPA
curriculum.
