How to read a 5-digit number

▪ First, say the first two digit followed by the following digit

72 108 = seventy-two thousand 13 265 = thirteen thousand
one hundred and eight two hundred and sixty-five

1. Say and write the numbers in words.

a) 39 804

= Thirty-nine thousand eight hundred and four

= Ninety thousand three hundred and forty-eight

1. Say and write the numbers in numerals.

State the place value and digit value

1. State the digit at the place value of thousands.

2. What is the value of digit 1 in the numbers above?

3. State the place value of digit 0 in the numbers above?
= hundreds

Write numbers in extended notation

▪ Example: 72 081

a) According to digit value
= 70 000 + 2 000 + 80 + 1

b) According to place value
= 7 ten thousands + 2 thousands + 0 hundreds + 8 tens + 1 ones

a) According to digit value
= 90 000 + 600 + 5

b) According to place value
= 9 ten thousands + 0 thousands + 6 hundreds + 0 tens + 5 ones



Comparing Numbers

a) Between two numbers

- Compare the number of digit.

- If the numbers have the same number of digits, we can using place
value chart and compared each digit from left to right.

40 127 8 935

5 digits 4 digits

So, 40 127 is larger than 8 935

Comparing Numbers

b) More than two numbers or have the same number of digits.

- we can using place value chart and compared each digit from left to right.

- Example: 37 508 37 541 37 541

Different digits. 0 is less than 2 and 4

So, 37 508 is less than 37 520 and 37 541

Example 5

Compare the numbers. 72 854 7 326

= 7 326 is less than 72 081 and 72 854.

= 72 854 is larger than 72 081

Arrange numbers in ascending and
descending order

Example:

40 850, 45 080, 40 508, 45 008

a) Ascending order – from the smallest value to the largest
value.
= 40 508, 40 850, 45 008, 45 080

b) Descending order - from the largest value to the smallest
value.
= 45 080, 45 008, 40 850, 40 508

Example 6

63 108, 60 450, 60 540, 61 810

Arrange the four numbers in ascending order and descending order.

a) Ascending order
= 60 450, 60 540, 61 810, 63 108

b) Descending order
= 63 108, 61 810, 60 540, 60 450
