The Twist Up
By Giovanni Bustillos
Mrs.Yam strolled down the aisle passing out math test. A+ I thought silently. She slowly
approached me. The way she held the paper I could tell it wasn’t near a A+. She slid the paper
toward me. I lifted it off the desk. D+ I thought loudly.
“What did you get” asked Marcos ?
“D+” I whispered.
His jaw dropped.
“I got a A+” he uttered.
Then my jaw dropped.
How is this possible, I thought ?
“YOU CAN’T PLAY IN THE GAME FRIDAY” he yelled.
“I know but that’s only if my mom finds out” I smirked.
Later that day
I opened the wooden door to my house. I walked in quietly trying to make sure my mom didn’t
hear me.
“TOM IS THAT YOU” I heard my mom yell.
I stood frozen and quite. I heard footsteps approach where I was.
“TOM” she scream “why didn’t answer me” ? My mom wore an apron her hands covered in
white powder. From the way she looked I was pretty sure she was cooking.
“I didn’t hear you” I uttered.
“Didn’t hear me” she said displeased, placing her hands on her hips.
“Yeah I didn’t,” I lied. My palms began to get sweaty I was afraid she was going to find out about
the math test.
“Oh well I got a email from your teacher saying you got a D+ on your quiz” she smirked.
I swore under my breath. My worst nightmare had just came true. She knew about the test it
was over. I was grounded.
“A D+” she shouted “WHAT HAPPENED TO A+” ?
“I don’t know I felt I did everything good” I said silently.
“Well you know what that means” she smiled.
Please don’t say no football game, I thought.
“You're not allowed to participate in the football game tonight” she said.
Did she just read my mind? I thought slowly.
Her face went from peach to red that meant she was mad without warning she scream“Go to
your room” she angrily pointed toward the stairs.
I marched up to my room. My mom shouted more words but I didn’t listen. I lay on my bed. My
phone rang beside me. he caller ID. I clicked the red button. I didn’t want to talk to anyone.
That night
I heard my phone vibrate again. I looked at the caller ID Marcos. I answered.
“Hey” he said.
“Hey I need your help I have to play in that game tonight” I grinned
"Alright you know the plan" I told Marcos.
"Yes I pretend I'm you asleep" he answered climbing under the covers of my bed.
I climbed out the window I waved goodbye to Marcos and climbed down. Sally was waiting for
me.
"Hurry up let's get to the game" she yelled.
I ran at the car and we drove to the game.
"TOM COME ON HURRY" yelled Coach John.
It was the fourth quarter 1 minute. My team lined up at the end of the field. The opponent team
kicked the ball it flew into the air. I successfully caught the ball. I ran down field. I dodged all the
defenders. But Xavier also known as The Bull came after me. No No No I thought as he ran at
me. I could only jump over him. The touchdown was right there. I jump my feet lifted off the floor
over The Bull. I saw his eyes widened as I landed in the touchdown. The crowd cheered as I
landed. The bell rung marking the game is over. I walked off the field. The final score was
1421.
I walked towards Sally's car. I stopped in my tracks. My Mom was standing next to the car.
"Hey mom" I said slowly.
"I caught Marcos" she said at the verge of screaming.
"Mom I had to " I sputtered.
"You're grounded I told " she scream getting interrupted .
"Tom glad you're here" said Mrs.Yam "I got yours and Marcos test messed up".
"WHAT" yelled my mom and I in unison !
"Yeah your grade isn't a D it's supposed to be a A" she said slowly.
"Wadda about that email" My mom said ?
"Supposed to go to Marcoses mom" she said.
I looked at my mom she looked at me.
"I should be going" said Mrs.Yam walking toward the field.
"Wow I actually got a A" I said.
"You're still grounded for disobeying me" frowned my mom.
