Classes began this year with a big change to one of
our campus landmarks, Sacred Heart Church. The
Church has been undergoing renovations and at times
her beautiful stained glass windows have been shrouded
from our view. This is the image the Sacred Heart pa
rishioners must have seen back in 1913 when they be
gan to build their new church on this property. Architect
E.A.P. Newcomb had designed a miniature Gothic
church that included beautiful stained glass windows in
a refined, classic style. The windows were designed and
manufactured in Le Puy, France. All the windows were
gifts of individual parishioners and parish societies anx
ious to present scenes of our faith for the world to see.

The artisans made an attempt to put a piece of Hawaii
into several of the pictures by including taro leaves and
sunflowers in the banners. Each window would have
something special in it: the thatching of the stable in the
nativity, the face in the soldier’s armor in the resurrection,
and the appearance of Jesus to St. Margaret.

and Church Restoration

2

The whole neighborhood waited
for the glorious depictions of the
Bible and saints to be installed; but
World War I broke out and the
windows were held up first, be
cause of submarine warfare in the
Atlantic and then, in New York
because materials received priority
in shipping. The windows of Sa
cred Heart were blank until the end
of the war in 1918. When they
were installed, they filled the
church with jewel like colors that
are admired even today.

Fortunately, these beautiful depic
tions of our faith will soon be
unshrouded so that we can once
again enjoy the lovely play of light
that filters through these superb
works of art and allow everyone to
learn about the life of Jesus and the
saints through them.

Letter From the President

Dear Maryknoll Grade School Students

As you pass through the pages of this book, I hope you will think ofit

as your own personal “Window in Time,” and that life as you remember it will

'*'" ' "■ ■ ' ■■■■"■ -4

stand still fin* a few minutes as you reflect on events gone by, friends you

shared good times with, and people that made up such an important part of

your younger years.

The remarkable thing about yearbooks is that you can go back to them

many, many times and find new things that you either passed over earlier or

have long forgotten about. In other words, it is not a static bode; it tends to

grow as you grow. At times, it serves as a social history book, reminding you

where you were and what you were doing at a specific time, what movies you

were watching, music you were listening to and what style ofclothing you

and your friends were wearing,

At other times, the book will simply serve as a gentle reminder of days

gone by when life was a bit simpler for you, a time when you were free of

most responsibilities, and a time when you were forming friendships that

would last a lifetime.

Whatever reason brings you to this book in the future, I hope it serves

as a wide open “Window in Time” for you and that you thoroughly enjoy the

visit with your past.

Aloha,

Michael E. Baker

Dear Maryknoil Grade Students: •

I often stop to watch the younger children as they play on the jungle gym at recess. As 1

., , .. * z . .. -

watch, I am always fascinated by their persistence as they explore the many different challenges

they encounter. They climb, slide, hang, swing, and jump, pushing their ability to the limit

Once they master one skill, they try another activity that’s more daring, and repeat it over and

over again until that one is mastered as well. Then they move on again.

I believe we can all learn from these young children, for they show us the importance of
never giving up when facing challenges.

As you look through the “Windows of Time” this past year, you will recall countless
opportunities that came your way: some were planned by your teachers while others arose
i unexpectedly. These experiences may have been challenging, hilarious, embarrassing, or
unforgettable, but you never gave up. Whatever the outcome, these experiences have become
. some of the building blocks for your future, and 1 trust you win always treasure them in your
heart. Some of these experiences are now captured in this yearbook.

In all these experiences, remember that God was, and always will be with you, sharing in
yourjoys and fan, challenges, and difficulties. I hope the photos and articles in the yearbook
wiU always fill you with fond memories of the “Windows of Time” in the year 2004-2005. Just
t like the children on the playground equipment, may you never give up and always feel the joy
and reward of learning something new!

Thank you for helping to shape these memories of the 2004-2005 school year for us at

Maryknoil Grade School.
