of silence during a retreat. Tw o excellent
talks dealth with p e r t i n e n t subjects,
company-keeping and m arriage. Father
was a fund of m irth producting illustra
tions w hich nevertheless, “drove home
his p o in t.” E ach day began with the
H oly Sacrifice of the M ass and closed
w ith B enediction of the m ost Blessed
S acram ent.

T his y e a r’s S pring F estival was th e operetta,
“C honita”, a gypsy romance, w i t h Agnes
D om dom a as C h o n ita an d M elvin Vios as
Stefan, her lover. T a le n t was discovered in
several of the underclassm en, too, and we are
expecting great things of them in the future.
A dding liveliness to the festive gypsy camp
was our versatile chorus c o m p r i s e d of 60
students, who sang “H iyo-ho”, “Soft Call the
Birds” and m any other beautiful melodies.
W e filled D illingham H all to capacity for
two evenings and following the S aturday night
perform ance, a p arty was given for the cast
by the faculty in Rogers Hall.
In token of appreciation, the faculty and
student body extend a hearty thank you to Fred
M eyers who directed the o p eretta with such
skill and who proved himself to be a veritable
“Jack-of-all-trades” behind the scenes. His
patience and good h u m o r a t all times has
endeared him to all.

gathering at her shrine for hymns, prayers and a
lei-giving ceremony. In M ay we were privileged
to enter, w ith all the C atholic H igh Schools, a
M arian Y ear Speech Festival. A triduum was held
in D ecem ber culm inating with the recitation of the
Living Rosary.

Spartanettes
W ith M axine M iran d a as coach, the M H L Girls’
CY O volleyball team captured the cham pionship with
a clean record. Finishing the season w ith a 9-won,
0-lost record, the Spartanettes, in flashy new uniforms
of yellow shirts with m aroon lettering and white pedal
pushers, defeated the team s from St. Francis Convent
and S tar-of-the-S ea. Incidentally, the games were all
won in two straight sets which included the round-
robin games.
Chosen for their ability and skill in the game, our
team included M axine Echols, Jo Stender, Antonella
Chock, Georgia M ae M undon, B arbara Jones, Betty
M anzano, M arlene Soares, L iberta du Pont, Winnie
Judd, Sadie M au, Jackie de Pont, Pauline Smith, and
M ary Texiera. Shirley Salomon was team manager.
D uring the basketball season, the team, composed
of thirteen girls, won against Star-of-the-Sea 47-37,
then dropped their next two games to St. Francis A
a n d St. F rancis B, 33-22 an d 25-24 respectively. S tartin g

kaua Gym. But our joy was shortlived for
we bowed to K am eham eha a few days later.
It seemed as if it would be an up and down
season for us as we next topped M cKinley
55 - 48. T his victory was followed by a m id
year slum p as we lost to Iolani and St. Louis
against predictions and to P unahou as ex
pected. D espite G eorge C o rre ia’s playing, the
Spartans tasted defeat at the hands of Kaimuki

us w ith a 3 win, 10 loss season score and near
the bottom of the league.

This was our year! Sometimes happy, some
times sad, bu t all in all the best w e’ve had.
Sept.— We donned the title of “m ighty seniors”
and put it to use on Initiation Day. T he “freshies”
proved their ability to be true Knollers.
O ct.— Father Eugene M orin, SS.C.C., retreat
m aster, impressed on us the necessity of broadening
the foundation of our spiritual life. Senior B was
aw arded $10 at carnival time for having the best
decorated booth.
Nov.— Senior A dug out the black grease
paint from the m ake-up kit and presented an
original m instrel show. O n N ovem ber 25, Sim-
plico R esari and Agnes D om dom a perform ed in
the A nnual T alent Show taking third prize for
their duet “Tell Me W hy.”
Dec.— Senior B was not to be outdone in the
dram atic aspect. Betty Blake, Shirley Salomon,
Antonella Chock and Pat Hopkins worked to
gether on writing a 3-act play, the comedy,
“Little W om en?”

again— we had only a month.
M ay— This was the busiest of all the months
— final, exams— the Sports Banquet— the Junior
Prom at which A lbert C hang and Betty Blake
reigned, and practice squeezed in each day for
the big events of Class N ight and G raduation.
O n M ay 28 we m arch ed dow n the aisle ’neath
the crown flower leis to perform our last official
act as Seniors of M aryknoll H igh School— the
giving of our flam ing torches to be held aloft by
the new seniors. Two days later we became the
“g ra d u ated ” Class of 1955.
