Out

Of The

Blue...

aryknoll 1995-96 has been a year of sur

Mprises. Everywhere you looked, things
were popping up, left and right, here and
there, out of the blue. At times, things
seemed to have appeared out of nowhere. Just look at
our campus; in the course of one short school year,
what was once a mere outline on our principal’s blue
prints is now a reality on the Maryknoll High School
campus ...

For years, space (or the lack of it) has always been a
problem, and ... BOOMI-nowwe have a second floor
addition to our famed Physical Education complex.
Speaking of P.E., as a ball player, I could name hun
dreds of things wrong with our old basketball courts. At
basketball practice, we'd spend more time complaining
about the courts than practicing. Suddenly-out of the
blue-we've got two new "b-ball" courts to practice on.

That alone would keep me content, but there’s more:

Someone heard our cries for help—particularly for those
unfortunate souls, the ones burdened with crutches or a
wheelchair—and out of the blue came an elevator in
front of the school.

Also relatively new to the scene is our Essential Schools
Program. Now in its second year, Essential Schooling
has awed students and teachers alike with its effective,
vanguard style of teaching.

MHS in '96 has been anything but predictable. 'Knollers
learned to expect the unexpected. There was the unan
ticipated. There was the unforeseen. And while many
things may give you a thrill, there is nothing like the
thrill of something out of the blue

Founders’ Day...
A Legacy To
Continue

(top and above) Administrators, faculty, staff, students, ctober 13, 1995 marked a first for Maryknoll Schools when it celebrated

alumni and honored guests (Maryknoll Fathers, Sisters, and OFounders’ Day in honor of the men and women who established the Catholic
Brothers) filled the pews for the Founders' Day celebration. Foreign Mission Society of America (Maryknoll) and the first group of Mary
knoll Missioners who founded our school in 1927.
Administration, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and special guests (Maryknoll Fathers.
Sisters, and Brothers) began the celebration with a morning Mass at St. Theresa's Co
Cathedral, followed by a luncheon, entertainment, and an historical slide presentation
at the high school campus.
Tribute was paid to the founders of Maryknoll's religious orders: Rev James Anthony
Walsh, and Rev. Thomas Frederick Price (Maryknoll Fathers), and Sister Mary Joseph
Rogers (Maryknoll Sisters).

Also remembered were the first arrivals to the Punahou area in Honolulu, Hawaii on
February 4, 1927: Rev. William Kress, and Brother William Morini, and the Sisters who
followed in September that same year. The first "gray" line of Maryknoll nuns included
Sisters Veronica, Borchmans, Immaculata, Mathias, Robert, and Tarsicius (our first prin
cipal), First classes were held in what is now Bachelot Hall.
It is our Founders’ legacy that we continue today by remembering our school motto
"Noblesse Oblige"-much is asked of whom much has been given

HAPPENINGS

Remember Me This Way
Every now and then
We find a special friend
Who never lets us down,

I 'a I

,wt

'lA

I know you can’t stay.
A part of you will never ever go

away, your heart will stay.

To such a gentle mind.
And if you lose your way,
Think back on yesterday,
Remember me this way
Remember me this way.

I don’t need eyes to see
The love you bring to me,
No matter where I go.
And I know that you’ll be there;

Forever you’re a part of me,
You’re everywhere.
I’ll always care.

40

Think back on yesterday.
Remember me this way;
Remember me this way.

-Hut 1

GRPARDOUJEACTTION

42

I’ll be standing by your side in
all you do.

44

And I won’t ever leave
as long as you believe.

--Jordan Hill, “Casper”
