ur world is ON THE EDGE of a new

Omillennium. The twenty-first century
is quickly approaching. Across the
globe, countries are preparing themselves
for such a momentous occasion. Likewise,
all facets of Maryknoll have stepped up to
complete the challenge.

ON THE EDGE of a new, unknown future
are the seniors. This year signals two events
for them. First, it signals the end of high
school. Throughout their final year at Mary­
knoll, different forms of closure are being
achieved by each senior. This Includes the
completion of a Senior Project, the com­
pletion of a graduation portfolio, and the
completion of credits needed to gradu­
ate. Second, this year signals the begin­
ning of adulthood. All must answer impor­
tant, life-altering questions, the biggest of
which is, "What will I do after high school?"
A required College Guidance course en­
sures that each will make the best decision

possible.
ON THE EDGE of exploration are the

freshman, sophomore, and junior classes.
Unlike the seniors, these classes are in the
midst of what is deemed as being the
“best four years" of a person's life. It is a
time for each to search their surroundings,
find interests, and establish friendships. All
are offered the opportunity to choose
classes which appeal to them, as well as
being given the opportunity to join various
clubs and social groups.

ON THE EDGE of learning is the faculty.
The adopted principles of the Coalition of
Essential Schools system challenges all fac­
ulty to foster the idea of “student as
worker." With an exhibition to complete
and an essential question to answer, each
student is given the opportunity for creativ­
ity in learning. The results have been im­
pressive and wide-ranging. However, this
quest for knowledge does not simply aim
itself towards the students. The faculty
themselves have the opportunity for learn­
ing. For example, this year Principal Andrew
Corcoran has taken a sabbatical leave
and is engaged in courses at Columbia
University.

ON THE EDGE of unity is student life. Be­
ing a small school, Maryknoll has given
many opportunities for the different classes
to come together as one unit. Our first op­
portunity is during the annual Field Day fes­
tivities, meant to welcome the freshman
class. Throughout the year, many more op­
portunities arise. Maryknoll has over thirty
student-based organizations, almost all of
which are available to every grade level.

play, Winter Ball, Homecoming Week, and Prom.

Finally, ON THE EDGE of competition is sports. Maryknoll has made a commitment to ensure that the
talents of their students are continuously brought to life and are continuously encouraged to grow. Students
participate in over twenty different sports, transforming themselves into Spartans or a Wolfpack. Those who do
not play still contribute by being active fans and cheer their fellow classmates on to victory.

Last year, Maryknoll established the presence of its rich past. This year, Maryknoll established the presence of
its rich future. The world is ON THE EDGE of a new millennium and Maryknoll is ready for the jump.
