In Latin, et cetera literally means "and the rest." You've heard it used

before: when students can't think of another example in a presentation, when
teachers have too many adjectives to list all at once, and when celebrities and
politicians want to sound knowledgeable on TV. Usually, the phrase is
brought into play when a person needs to describe a vast array of possibilities.
An immense array of possibilities. Colossal. Enormous. Gargantuan.
Brobdingnagian. Big. Et cetera.

And this year has certainly been big. The 2012-2013 school year marked

the 85th anniversary of Maryknoll School, the centennial anniversary of the
Maryknoll Sisters, the presidential election, the London Olympics... oh, and
don't forget the narrowly avoided end of the world. But guess what?
Maryknoll, the United States, and humankind are not the only ones who have
had exciting experiences. This year has also been big for you.

Yes, you, the high school student holding this yearbook! What happened
in your year? Maybe you made a new friend, or read a new book, or joined a
new club. Maybe you worked at your first job. Maybe you starred in your first
play. Maybe you earned the best grades you've ever had—shot the winning
basket in the big game— realized that time's going by faster than you ever
thought it would.

Whether it was just last fall of almost four years ago, think back now to
the day when you first stepped onto campus, all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed
and raring to go. You weren't little anymore; you were one of the big kids
now. You were a high school student, with this glorious chance to be
whatever you wanted. Remember the way you felt that day? Like you could
take on anything? As though everything was possible?

Hold on to that.

Encompassing four important years, high school is a time to learn, grow,
change, explore, make mistakes, make noise and most importantly, make
memories. So scream your head off at Spirit Day! Dance your heart out at
Winterball! Get off your laptop and meet with your favorite club at lunch -
why not? How you act now will give you a foundation to build upon later.
The cherished experiences you have had in the past will support you as you
walk into the next year, and the year after, and the year after.

To the freshmen, to the sophomores, to the juniors, and to the seniors; it
doesn't matter how old your are. As you move forward in age and life,
remember those first-day-of-high-school bright eyes. Remember that you-yes,
you-are capable, intelligent, strong and more than enough. But most of all,
remember that the future is only unknowable because it could hold anything:
wonderful friends, world travels, cheering crowds, incredible days, achieve

dreams, new horizons, and the rest...
