Under the guidance of Coach Kalaukoa, the boys worked
hard to gain their best record yet. Sparked by the talents
of Ricky Moad and Gerald Javier they won five games
this season. Most members of the team were well experi
enced and played well against the other schools.
The Girls’ Varsity Team had a rough season and found
the competition stiff. They ended the season with a 5-11
record. Led by Captain Laurie Shirai and spikers Akau
and Ostrowski, they put up a good fight.
Both varsity teams can look forward to next year’s turn
out since most of the current members will be returning.

HBMMU Varsity Football
I
For the first time, the forces of Maryknoll, Mid-Pacific Institute, Hawaii Baptist Academy, and University High which
form the HBMMU football team entered the varsity level of competition. It had been a long way up for all the four
schools. From flag football to JV Tackle Football, they have finally reached their ultimate challenge. Under the direc
tion of Head Coach Leon Schumaker and four assistant coaches, they undertook a mighty task. Although the Hummers
could not claim a victorious game, they played with fine skill, courage, and spirit in effort to score several touchdowns
during the season.

Varsity Basketball
The Varsity basketball team was expressive of the true Maryknoll Spirit, this year. Things looked dim at the start of
the pre-season, but time progressed and the boys gained more experience. The team captured second in the Mid-Pacific
Invitational, and first in the Punahou Class “A” Invitational. As the season opened, the Spartans faced many stiff
competitors.

up with swimmers from Mid-Pac,

HBMMU Girls’ Track
Coach Patti Sullivan
This year’s girls’ track team was blessed with a huge turn out from
Maryknoll. Coach Patti Sullivan was happy to have many returnees
and new faces which show promise in future years.
Recently, finishing their first meet, the Hummers placed in many
events. They expanded their force by entering, for the first time, in
the long jump, and shot put events as well as their sprinters and
I distance runners.
