For anyone lucky enough to call Hawai'i home, we are all shaped by the beauty of our surroundings; the mountains,
the sun, the streams, the beaches and the ocean. This year, Maryknoll School focused our motto of Nobelsse Oblige
"to whom much is given, much is expected11 to be stewards of preserving our island home. Hana Manawael'a "work
with a generous heart" was a theme that integrated Hawai'i, our school motto and the call for being stewards of the
environment.

Ma uka - In ancient times, the
kuahiwi (mountains) provided a
great abundance of resources.
The abundance of fresh water
provided for our ancestors
before us and will continue to
provide for us as long as we
malama i ka 'aina (take care of
the land). The mountains
provided natural land divisions in
the land. The Hawaiian people
had a Hawaiian subsistence
economy and got everything
from their surroundings. The
'aina up in the uka area provided
resources such as, medicines,
food, wood for canoes, and
many other resources to help
Hawaiians live a sustainable life.

Ma kai - Ocean water or kai was very important to
Hawaiian people and had many healing properties.
Many people go to the kai to cleanse their spirit and
heal their mind. Kai was a place that many Hawaiians
would go to, to nourish their bodies with i'a (fish) and
limu (seaweed). The ocean also provided a place of
recreation. Today, it is important that we all malama i ke
kai (take care of the ocean).
