‘Remembering...

Fr. John J. Stankard

He called himself God
and knew God would forgive him for it.
Long, tall, gangling, imposing in height and stare,

bald, merry of face and grin with blue twinkling eyes,
Mischievous, crusty, firm of hand, brusque,
Bermuda-shorted, hatted in faded and well worn cotton,
Strong, decisive, self-assured in stride,
Funny on a bike, resonant of voice,
A simple man,
comfortable in his skin, confirmed in his faith,
at peace with himself and his God...
These are my thoughts and impressions

of the man called John.
I assume that he is observing this remembrance of him

and thinking
that he knows how we’ll act or react to his passing,

impatient with the fuss of it all.
I think he never knew
that there were some of us who had his number.
He baptized us, married us,
heard our confessions, shared our grief.
He was kind of heart, compassionate, tender,

a good friend, a marshmallow.
One on one there was no one better.
Aloha, Wounded Leader, you are missed.
Mrs. Kaahaaina
Eulogy delivered at Fr. Stankard's Memorial Mass
January 19, 1995 Sacred Heart Church
