DON’T PANIC.
IT’S NOT A “REAL” WORD.

IT’S AN INVENTION.
IT’S A STATE OF MIND, OF WELL BEING.

Synchronicity is very much a reality at Maryknoll High School.
Then why haven’t I noticed it before? you may be asking. Well,
maybe synchronicity is so much a part of life at Maryknoll that you
tend to take its existence for granted.

till, you’re probably wondering what exactly is synchronicity. Does
it have something to do with things being in synchronization? Cor
rect! It has a lot to do with things being and working in unison
though they appear to function independently of each other. But this
means little if you don’t know how it fits into your life at Maryknoll.
Maybe this will shed some light on the matter:

eniors, juniors, sophomores, freshmen, working together instead of
competing against each other, elling at pep rallies and games and
keeping quiet at Mass and when Mr. Corcoran, your principal,
speaks, ew friends made, old friends kept, ombining intellect with
creative insight, aving the guts to stand up for what you believe in,
but having an open mind at the same time, eaching out to the com
munity and applying what’s learned in the classroom, vercoming
fears, realizing dreams. Nap time when you can get one in the day.
ntegrating the new Essential School curriculum for freshmen with a
regular program for sophomores, juniors, and seniors, apable stu
dents juggling studies, athletics, club activities, friends, families, and
life in general, dealism and realism rolled into one. eachers and
students learning together, et another word to sum up what makes
the Maryknoll community unique.

Aren’t you glad to be a part of it?

-Clarissa Ho, ’95

That’s the last phrase I’d use to describe my high school life. Everything 1 ever
had to do always came at once. All my tests would be crammed into the week
before progress reports or when grades were due. My projects were all assigned a
same time. 1 could go weeks without a meeting for any club, and then one day—three
meetings during the same lunch period. I want to support our sports teams, but I can't
make it to their games because there are five on the same day at five different places.
Forget synchronizing life when it’s track season or working an after school job. And
you? You probably feel the same way. No one wants to go out until the one day you
already have ten things to do. One club wants you at a beach clean-up, but there’s
that car wash that you said you’d help out at. You’d like to have some time for your
self, but you’re in Student Government and that sucks up any hopes for a spare
minute to relax. And you want to see that movie that just came out, but you’ve got all
that homework and studying to do because grades are due next Friday. Weekends
just aren’t long enough ...

But I guess in the larger scheme of things, high school life fits together to run
smoothly ... when you’re lucky. It is possible, though, to be in sync, yet busy. And no
matter how stressed you felt this year, and how much you had going on, it’s all over
now. You did it, another year. June is near and you can throw all your books in the
closet and recycle all that paper you “wasted” this year on homework, etc.

Don’t forget to look back on what you will discover was actually a great year. Like
clockwork, your efforts were in sync with your teachers to make learning better. High
school upperclassmen and Essential School freshmen study on different schedules but
are still a part of the same school community. People involved in clubs and organizing
activities synchronize their schedules to bring Acquaintance Week, Field Day, Hallow
een games, and dances to our school. Then there was the school play, the Winter
Ball, Christmas Aloha, Homecoming, May Day, the Prom, Commencement Week
with Class Night, Graduation, and the all-nighter-party—Project Graduation. All of
these things, each individual elements of
Maryknoll, work in sync with the larger
entity of the school to create an unforget
table experience for each of us. And
that’s just what we got—another year of
knowledge, another year of friends, an
other year of memories-now all behind
us.
