CH I RHO KNOLLER

Dedication

Sister Margaret James

Just as these islands lend their warmth and friendliness as an example
to the world, so also did Sister Margaret James lend her warmth, generosi
ty, friendliness and wonderful spirit as an example, to Maryknoll High
School.

Although Sister has taken this contagious spirit with her to Guatemala
where she carries on God's work for souls, she still remains a part of us,
examplifying her favorite motto: “As one lamp lights another nor grows
less, so nobleness enkindles nobleness

The Most Reverend
JAMES J. SWEENEY, D.D.

Principal of MHS

SISTER MICHAEL MARIE “To train a citizen is to train a critic.
Principal The whole point of education is that it
should give a man abstract and eternal
of Maryknoll High School standards, by which he can judge mate
rial and fugitive conditions.”

G. K. Chesterton

Dear Graduates,
The past and the present are rapidly fus

ing to become the future. Your past at Mary
knoll was devoted to preparing you for what
you must be and do here on earth in order
to be happy with God for all eternity.

Maryknoll has provided untold oppor
tunities to help you to be what you must be:
daily Mass and Holy Communion, frequent
Confession, retreats, conferences, and chapel
visits. If you have utilized these means of
happiness, then you have done what God
intended you should dcr in order to be hap-

py-
Now as you live in the present, you are

pleasing to God; you are a “glorious com
pany of student youth.” If you continue to
live His will for you, if you practice the
presence of God within you, if you pray, if
you live virtuously, then there will never be
a “tragedy” in your life.

Out of such great faith, the future will
bring an ever-deepening love of God which
is the only basis of a happy life. In the won
derful atmosphere of God’s love, the holiness
of your past and the sanctification of the
present will secure your future happiness
on earth and in eternity.

Prayerfully in Our Lady of Maryknoll,

Clockwise: Srs. M. Robert, Christina Francis, M. dePorres, M. Corita, Ana Dolo- 5
ritas, J. Marie, Mercedes Maria, Mariel, Madelon Marie, J. Maureen, M. Leona,
M. Neri (in center).

Our Priests, Fathers Gombold, Winkle, and Matheis, plan Religion
instructions for successful living.

Lay Teachers, Mrs. Lehmann, Mr. Pruski, and Miss Blake, con
verse with Sister Michael Marie, Principal. Mr. Au a welcome
newcomer.

Freshmen

ANDREW The last year of this decade saw everything from “way
President out” Martians through local hula dancers traipsing about our
serene Maryknoll campus, to the lively cadence of Maryknoll’s
MICHAEL YOUNG lowly Frosh Initiation song. The two who most successfully
Presi1d/ient endured the rigors of the day reigned as King and Queen at
the Acquaintance Dance held the same evening. In addition to
WILLIAM FERREIRA King Robert Lung and Queen Gloria Isabello, William Ferreira
Vice-President and Faye Enos were crowned Prince and Princess.

Soon after this Andrew Yee and Michael Young were cho
sen to guide their homerooms through the new year.

At the Halloween Dance the peace-loving Frosh broke the
ghostly atmosphere to serve some down-to-earth, tasty refresh
ments.

Several orators were discovered among our Frosh at the Pu-
nahou, Chaminade and University speech events. Mary Gray-
don and Jaynie Oishi participated in the Punahou Story Telling
Festival, while Karen Higa, Eileen O’Donnell, and Frank Grau-
er were contestants at the Chaminade Tournament. Both Shei
la Conant and Betty Wong received superior rating from the
University Speech Festival.

In December many of the Freshmen enjoyed their first
formal, the Military Ball, which was held at the Fort Shafter
Officers Club.

The spirited Freshmen, have been right up front in every
school-wide competition. They have consistently had the most
parents present at the P.T.G. meetings; in the TOYS FOR
TOTS drive, Freshmen A was found in first place while Fresh
men B was runners-up.

The newcomers to our family have both athletic and scholas
tic ability. Michael Young, Robert Lung and Robert McFar
land were on the J.V. basketball team while Pat Ching, Cathe
rine Kanai, Sharlene Young of 9A with Sheila Conant’, Mary
Graydon, Karen Higa, Jaynie Oishi, and Dorothy Oba of 9B
found a well-earned place on the Honor Roll.

Sophomores

CALVIN CHOY LEE The sparky Sophomores deserve a big hand for their con
President tributions to our Maryknoll family. Their first big thrill came
when they welcomed the incoming Freshmen with a terrific
JOHN SHONG program and, to top it off, provided souvenirs for the Acquaint
President ance Dance. Their true spirit and parent interest were shown
when they procured the first place banner after the first P.T.G.
JOHN AZEVEDO meeting.
Vice-President
“Spooksville M.H.S.”, an appropriate name for our Halloween
Dance, was the theme picked by the Sophomores who created
the decorations.

Maryknoll was well represented by the Sophomore Classes
at the Chaminade Speech Contest in Yvonne Duarte and John
Shong; the Punahou Speech Festival, in Kathy Lijidberg; and
the University Speech Festival in Kathy Lindberg and Mar
garet Ferris.

The true Maryknoll school spirit rang out all over the cam
pus as “Rocking Spartans”, a Sophomore entry in the Song
Contest—led by Gwen Gabral, Gwen Scarfone, and Carolyn
Martin, took first place.

The Sophomores provided a large percentage of the C.Y.O.
Girls’ Volleyball Team, with such hardy players as: Diane
Enos, Gwen Cabral, Nedra Kalauokalani, Norma Paiaina, and
Pat Moad.

The Basketball teams have great potentials in JV’ers Billy
Fernandez, Wally Rezentes, Chester Kanai, Paul Condry, Clem
ent Paalani, Harold Williams, and Norman Wassman as well
as the Senior Varsity’s Lee Cashman, Benny Sills, and Francis
Souza.

Norman Wassman, Pauline Morton, Henry Kaili and Yvonne
Duarte represented the Sophomore Classes in the Aloha Week
Program. The Sophomores can boast about their Aloha princess,
Pauline Morton, who was crowned “Miss Thom McAn”, as
well.

Of course, with such earnest and hard-working class officers
how' can the Sophomores help but be sparky.

& Juniors

EDWIN ARITA The year started off with class elections, and the results
President were as follows: Junior B President, Wilkie Au; Veep, Sherman
Roberts; Secretary, Betty Murakami; Treasurer, Joan Ebisu.
SHERMAN ROBERTS Junior A President, Eddie Arita; Veep, Wendell Pea; Secretary,
Vice-President Jana Doyle; Treasurer, A1 Chinen. The standing committees
who planned many activities for the class were: The Welfare,
Spiritual and Junior Red Cross Committees.

The next big event to follow was a party given to welcome
Mr./Pruski and the new Juniors. Entertaining at the party were
the/rocking Del Monts who later brought honors to the Junior
Division when they placed 3rd in the Aloha Week Youth Talent

ntest at the Waikiki Shell,
i,'/ For the Aloha Week Pageant, Barbara Jean Freitas, Wanda

oopai, David Lum and Wendell Pea were chosen princesses and
rinces from the Junior Division.

The Junior Class Day arrived and all looked bright and gay
in their class colors, of blue and white. After eating a delicious
lunch together the Juniors presented a fashion show—of thirty
years ago!

By combining to produce “A Mystery Play”, the Junior Div
ision gave a Christmas production which revealed shining talent.
Beautiful scenery, rich costumes and an excellent performance
by the cast all contributed to its success. Members of the cast
included Elliot Chamizo, Alycer Usita, Wilkie Au, Eddie Qui-
zon, Melvin Silva, Barbara Jean Freitas, Warren Leong, Dave
Lum, Warren Miura, Billy Lum, Toni Vaspra, and narrator,
Pat Carvalho.

Basketball season came around again with our Wongs, Jim
my and Timmy, as high scorers. Petite cheerleader, Sandy Per-
reira helped to make the cheering section one of the best.

Highlighting our Junior year were the beautiful and tradi
tional Class Night Ceremony and Junior-Senior Prom.

“Learn today; lead tomorrow,” the motto of our
R.O.T.C. Department, proved to be a source of ins
piration in our training classes and Battle Group
drills. Under the leadership of Captain A. Ahakuelo,
Col. James Cisler and his staff maneuvered a success
ful year.

The presentation of sponsors opened the year,
each girl adding beauty and charm to the companies
and drill team.

We escorted our charming dates to the Military
Ball, honored our mothers with a special Mother’s
Day Parade and then looked forward to revealing
in the annual stadium competition that we had
grasped through drill and training.

After conquering the stadium we passed in re
view with pride at the Armed Forces Day Parade,
bringing our military activities to an end.

The saber of authority is now handed to the
leaders of ’60 and ’61 who will prove once more
that “Maryknoll produces men.”
