nonlocking QOCarpkncll's ^<3)ream

Lord, our Lord, how awe

Osome is your name through
all the earth! You have set
your majesty above the
heavems! - When Iseeyour heavens, the work
ofyourfingers, the moon and stars thatyou set
in place — What are humans that you are
mindfidcfthem, mere mortals thatyou carefor
them? Yet you have made them little less that a
god, crowned them with glory and honor. You
have given them ride over the works ofyour
hands, put all things at theirfeet.

-Psalm 8
In creating us in just such a way,
God has given us the creativity to
dream big and little things and the
ability to bring them into being.
Unlocking the Dream is the
purpose of education, whether it
be to "explore a new piece of our
character through advisory and
debate, to enrich our choices
through exploratory days and
field trips, to deepen our knowl
edge through the study of the
three "R's", or to build new
structures that enable education.
In all these we are midful that we
have been given the "rule over the
works of God's hands", creation,
and that we are to be good
stewards of the mission we have
been given. As we end this year,
we remember the simple begin
nings of Maryknoll School, the
way that the Maryknoll Sister's
dream has evolved.

■' f'-ii --

Dear Maryknoll Grade School Students,
; • os, 1. c ■ ?h ' I

Recently niy wife and I were rummaging through an. attic on the mainland where we have a

number of items stored. We happened upon a, wooden box, and after a search to find the key to

open the box, we spent the next few hours taking a trip through time. The box contained pictures of

our families, of special holiday times, invitations, souvenirs from long-forgotten trips, ticket stubs> '

Irunany ways, we hope that this book is like that locked box in that it holds memories of an

important'time in your life and forever holds in place the people that you shared it with. I hope it

reminds you of the good times, the struggles, and those things that happened along the way that

helped shape you to the person you are today. 1 £ > ,.

Above all, we hope that your \faryknoll School experience helped to stimulate and nurture

your dreams, and that your passage through this and other schools provided the keys to unlocking

those dreams. ‘ y-G ;,t

President John Kennedy ,said, "The past is prologue,"- meaning that the events of the past are

the beginning'of the future. As you pass through the pages of this book, you will probably see the

wisdom of his words. You will no doubt recall times that inspired vou and assisted in unlocking

dreams - some that are fulfilled and some that are yet unrealized.

Unlocking4he Dream

' Have you ever dreambof flying over mountains, or holding your breath under water to explore the
■ocean's depths? When we are asleep, dreams seem very real, bbt then we wake up and life returns
to normal.

God has given,us a wonderful imagination so we can enter the world of dreams and enjoy the
impossible. And sometimes, dreams do come true! Sometimes; someone unlocks the door for us and
makes possible what often seems impossible.

When I Wash yloiing lad, I dreamt of traveling to Africa to explore the world of the wild animals,

and to explore the wide open plains where the majestic elephants lumbered, the fantastic cheetahs
sprint gracefully, and the lazy hippopotamus sink lazily along the muddy river banks. Do you
know, 20 years ago my dream came true, and ! was able to spend 6 weeks in South Africa on my
return from studying in Rome. My unforgettable dream that came true!

Going back a few years ago when Ms. Mattos* was a student at Maryknoll High School, the students,
teachers, and parents had a dream that one day, they would have a gymnasium. After many years
of waiting and wondering if the dream would ever come true, it appears the “dream will soon be
unlocked." Four yeansago the School Board,-the Parent Teacher guild (PTG), and the Maryknoll
alumnae got together and made a commitment to raise the money to build a gymnasium and com
munity center;, Already half the money has been raised and plans have been drawn up so the
Maryknoll dream will soon become a reality.

Just imagine what it will be lik#have a plate for everyone at.Maryknoll to celebrate the Mass, to
play volleyball and basket ball indoors! It is so exciting to think that we will be bale to gather in
doors in air-conditioned comfort and enjoy the May Day celebrations,

' Jhis is a dreatn that is coming true, thank’s to file generosity of so many people whcvare taking the
time to unlock the dream and make it happen.

Let's all use this as an example of how washould all dream and then work tenaciously to unlock
our dreams and make them a reality!
